Our pre-conference event will take place on Monday August 5, 2024 in the morning Eastern Time. Please note that presenting at DH2024 is NOT a requirement for participation in the SIG event. > > > Supported by ADHO, our SIG aims to connect scholars using digital humanities tools and methods on and in languages other than English. While the human condition is one of multilingualism, the Anglophone-centricity of digital humanities continues to be an impediment to DH scholars who work on, or teach with, materials in other languages---not to speak of the vast majority of scholars whose first language isn?t English or who do not work in English at all. Tools and tutorials are almost all designed to primarily work with English and any interaction with computers will necessitate the use of Latin-script. > > > Against the backdrop of DH2024?s theme of "reinvention & responsibility", we want to to bring practitioners of multilingual DH from ADHO constituent organisations together in order raise the profile of multilinguality and to learn from our respective experiences and approaches to the challenges and joys of multilingual DH in our specific geographic, linguistic and cultural contexts with the aim of making DH and ADHO a more openly multilingual endeavour. > > > > Our event will consist of 3 parts. The first part is actually before the meeting itself. We imagine these short initial interventions to address the issue of multilinguality. We provide a few questions related to the role that the Multilingual SIG can play in our academic lives. The conference will be in-person only and will take place in London, at King’s College London Strand Campus (WC2R 2LS), where the Department of Digital Humanities is based. The event aims to foster discussions and collaborations across various disciplines, specifically including Natural Language Processing (NLP), Social Sciences, and Social Media and Digital Methods in broader research in Digital Humanities. In an era defined by unprecedented connectivity and vast digital datasets, the intersection of NLP, Social Sciences, and Social Media alongside Digital Methods sparks a profound dialogue, reshaping our understanding of human behavior and societal dynamics within vast digital ecosystems. Critical Perspectives and Intersections in the Digital Humanities. The interdisciplinary symposium aims to further explore the concepts of “lack of cultural criticism” (Fiormonte 2012) and “situated knowledge” (Haraway 1988), which have been conjugated in their multiple facets in the field of DH. In particular, it will focus on the active and embodied role of the researcher, on the opportunities created by the application of Information Technology to the Humanities, and on the challenges presented by the use of technological tools, that are usually considered neutral, but which deeply influence the epistemologies and practices of the Humanities themselves. We encourage perspectives drawn from qualitative and quantitative historical and philological analysis, cultural criticism, and sociological, literary, artistic and linguistic disciplines, supported by digital and computational approaches. Attention will be paid to the linguistic, geographical and cultural hegemonies of DH, to the major issues of communication and the so-called “informatics of domination”, to the bias introduced by the extended use of Large Language Models, and to the complexity of interactions between Artificial Intelligence and artistic and cultural heritages and practices. This last topic will also be considered from the didactic perspective of DH and/or through its tools. Our aim was to bring together numerous debates connecting research with a linguistic focus to cultural criticism in Digital Humanities while addressing language technologies, documentation, and international language-based infrastructure creation. WG: Einladung zur Taskforce "Sprachregelung Konferenz"

Liebe Multilingual DH AG-Mitglieder, heute leite ich Euch im Auftrag des AG-Convenor-Teams eine Anfrage aus dem DHd-Vorstand weiter. Es geht um die Überarbeitung von Regeln zur Multilingualität auf DHd-Konferenzen. Hier hatten wir ja in diesem Jahr mit unserer AG ja bereits eine Erweiterung der Sprache für Einreichungen von Konferenzbeiträgen auch in englischer Sprache einbringen können. Leider sind wir im Convenor-Team aus verschiedenen Gründen in den kommenden 3 Monaten sehr ausgelastet und können uns daher hier nicht in zusätzlichen Sitzungen einbringen. Wir wollten auf diesem Wege aber nachfragen, ob es evtl. 1 oder 2 Mitglieder aus der AG gäbe, die ggf. zusammen (abwechselnd?) an der „Taskforce“ als Vertretung für unsere Multilingual DH AG teilnehmen könnten? In der DHd-Community rückt die Diskussion um eine gemeinsame Wissenschaftssprache immer wieder in den Fokus. Wir hatten jüngst unter anderem im Kontext Eures Diskussionspapiers und den Handlungsempfehlungen darüber gesprochen. Der DHd-Vorstand plant daher die Einsetzung einer temporären Taskforce, die sich der Sprachregelung für DHd-Konferenzen widmet. Ziel dieser Taskforce ist es, die verschiedenen Optionen von Mono-, Zwei- und Mehrsprachigkeit zu beleuchten. Die Ergebnisse der Taskforce sollen in einem Konzept zur "Sprachregelung Konferenz" münden, über das auf der nächsten DHd-Mitgliederversammlung im Februar 2024 abgestimmt werden soll. In der Vergangenheit haben wir erfolgreich solche Abstimmungen, beispielsweise zum Thema "Reviewverfahren", durchgeführt. Der geplante zeitliche Rahmen der Taskforce erstreckt sich also über drei Monate.
