Dear colleagues in the DHd-AG Multilingual DH, I would like to draw your attention to an event organized Digital Lab <https://recentglobe.uni-leipzig.de/en/infrastructure/digital-lab> at the Leipzig Research Centre Global Dynamics: Cecily Raynor (McGill University) Multilingual Digital Humanities Research: A Critical Overview In this talk, I will critically discuss multilingual digital humanities research, with a focus on practical considerations throughout the research process including the selection, assessment, and use of digital tools. We will examine some of the considerations of multilingual data-defining datasets, addressing language-specific concerns, and managing challenges such as encoding, translation, and text normalization. The session will also underscore key factors when choosing multilingual tools, including language compatibility, platform support, and data security. In addition, we will touch on the environmental and social impact of digital tools, exploring topics such as energy consumption, e-waste, and digital inclusion. Liebe Listenmitglieder, über eine Mailingliste von US-Ostasienstudien-Bibliothekar*innen bin ich auf unten genanntes Webinar aufmerksam geworden und leite Ihnen/Euch den Hinweis auf diesem Wege weiter. Thema des Webinars sind Guidelines für Normdaten in nichtlateinischen Schriften im US-Bibliothekssystem der Library of Congress. Man kann sich anmelden und falls die Uhrzeit des Webinars aufgrund der Zeitverschiebung ungünstig ist, erhält man im Nachhinein einen Link zur Aufzeichnung. Ich dachte, da Normdaten samt LOD ein wichtiges Thema in den DH geworden sind, ist es evtl. auch aus internationaler Perspektive interessant zu erfahren, wie das Thema Normdaten in nichtlateinischen Schriften dort diskutiert wird und welchen Einfluss das dann u.U. auf DH-Forschung haben könnte, die Library of Congress Normdaten verwendet/verwenden möchte? DEADLINE EXTENSION The Department of Digital Humanities at King’s College London is pleased to host the international conference Interdisciplinary Perspectives: Bridging Sociological Studies in the Digital Age on 11 June 2024. The conference will be in-person only and will take place in London, at King’s College London Strand Campus (WC2R 2LS), where the Department of Digital Humanities is based. The event aims to foster discussions and collaborations across various disciplines, specifically including Natural Language Processing (NLP), Social Sciences, and Social Media and Digital Methods in broader research in Digital Humanities. In an era defined by unprecedented connectivity and vast digital datasets, the intersection of NLP, Social Sciences, and Social Media alongside Digital Methods sparks a profound dialogue, reshaping our understanding of human behavior and societal dynamics within vast digital ecosystems. NLP emerges as a transformative force, equipping computers with the ability to comprehend, interpret, and generate human language, bridging the gap between digital data and human insights. This integration with Social Sciences fosters a multidisciplinary framework, enabling nuanced analyses of cultural phenomena, societal trends, and individual behaviors within digital realms. Concurrently, Social Media platforms emerge as dynamic arenas, offering real-time glimpses into human interactions, preferences, and sentiments, thus serving as invaluable sources for both NLP-driven research and social science inquiry. Through this interconnected dialogue, researchers navigate the complexities of the digital landscape, uncovering layers of meaning and driving innovation at the nexus of technology, social sciences, and digital methods. The conference will feature keynote speakers for each of the its main thematic areas: Andrea Nini (Manchester University) for Linguistics and NLP, Chiara Amini (UCL) for Social Sciences, and Tim Highfield (University of Sheffield) for Social Media and Digital Methods. They will offer insights into the latest advancements, challenges, and future directions within their respective fields, enriching the interdisciplinary dialogue and inspiring attendees to explore innovative avenues at the intersection of sociological studies and the digital age. For this conference, we invite submissions of abstracts in English focusing on the intersection of sociological studies and the digital age. Abstracts should be tailored for presentations lasting 20 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes allotted for questions. We particularly welcome submissions in the following areas or any intersection between them: 1. NLP 2. Social Sciences 3. Social Media and Digital Methods We encourage submissions from researchers, scholars, practitioners, and postgraduate researchers who are exploring innovative approaches, methodologies, and findings within these domains. Concurrently, Social Media platforms emerge as dynamic arenas, offering real-time glimpses into human interactions, preferences, and sentiments, thus serving as invaluable sources for both NLP-driven research and social science inquiry. Through this interconnected dialogue, researchers navigate the complexities of the digital landscape, uncovering layers of meaning and driving innovation at the nexus of technology, social sciences, and digital methods. The conference will feature keynote speakers for each of the its main thematic areas: Andrea Nini (Manchester University) for Linguistics and NLP, Chiara Amini (UCL) for Social Sciences, and Tim Highfield (University of Sheffield) for Social Media and Digital Methods. They will offer insights into the latest advancements, challenges, and future directions within their respective fields, enriching the interdisciplinary dialogue and inspiring attendees to explore innovative avenues at the intersection of sociological studies and the digital age. For this conference, we invite submissions of abstracts in English focusing on the intersection of sociological studies and the digital age. Abstracts should be tailored for presentations lasting 20 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes allotted for questions. We particularly welcome submissions in the following areas or any intersection between them: 1. NLP 2. Social Sciences 3. Social Media and Digital Methods We encourage submissions from researchers, scholars, practitioners, and postgraduate researchers who are exploring innovative approaches, methodologies, and findings within these domains. Prospettive Critiche e Intersezioni nelle Digital Humanities. Il convegno interdisciplinare intende esplorare più in dettaglio il concetto di “lack of cultural criticism” (Fiormonte 2012) e di “situated knowledge” (Haraway 1988), nelle loro molteplici declinazioni nell’ambito delle DH: in particolare, il ruolo attivo e incarnato del ricercatore, le opportunità derivanti dall’applicazione delle tecnologie informatiche agli studi umanistici e le sfide legate all’impiego di strumenti tecnologici, solitamente considerati neutrali, ma che influenzano profondamente le epistemologie e le pratiche degli studi umanistici. Accogliamo prospettive provenienti dall’analisi storica e filologica qualitativa e quantitativa, dalla critica culturale e dalle discipline sociologiche, letterarie, artistiche e linguistiche supportate da approcci digitali e computazionali. Critical Perspectives and Intersections in the Digital Humanities. The interdisciplinary symposium aims to further explore the concepts of “lack of cultural criticism” (Fiormonte 2012) and “situated knowledge” (Haraway 1988), which have been conjugated in their multiple facets in the field of DH. In particular, it will focus on the active and embodied role of the researcher, on the opportunities created by the application of Information Technology to the Humanities, and on the challenges presented by the use of technological tools, that are usually considered neutral, but which deeply influence the epistemologies and practices of the Humanities themselves. We encourage perspectives drawn from qualitative and quantitative historical and philological analysis, cultural criticism, and sociological, literary, artistic and linguistic disciplines, supported by digital and computational approaches. Attention will be paid to the linguistic, geographical and cultural hegemonies of DH, to the major issues of communication and the so-called “informatics of domination”, to the bias introduced by the extended use of Large Language Models, and to the complexity of interactions between Artificial Intelligence and artistic and cultural heritages and practices. This last topic will also be considered from the didactic perspective of DH and/or through its tools. Interested scholars are invited to submit anonymised abstracts of a maximum of 500 words (excluding bibliography) through EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=srdh2024 by 26 March 2024 in PDF format. Candidates will be asked to provide title, a maximum of 5 keywords and a short bio-bibliography. Papers can be written in English, French or Italian.
