“Multilinguality in Action: Towards Linguistic Diversity and Inclusion in Digital Humanities”. magazén, 5(2), December 2024 DOI 10.30687/mag/2724‑3923/2024/02/001 Gesamtausgabe der Zeitschrift Magazén: https://edizionicafoscari.it/media/pdf/journals/magazen/2024/2/iss-5-2-2024… Hinweis: cfp "Standardized multilingualism in the digital humanities?" bis 15.12.2024
by Wagner, Cosima 06 Dec '24

06 Dec '24
Opportunities and risks of AI-supported automation Anlass/Datum: German-Czech DH-Conference, 20-21 February 2025, Prague Link zum cfp: https://dhmuc.hypotheses.org/3356 Abstract: The availability of AI-driven translation technology is changing the way the humanities work on a practical level. Text sources in different languages, whether scientific literature or primary sources, have become widely available not only by digitization but also by automated translation. The implications that the availability and adoption of translation technologies will have for the scientific practice in the humanities shall be discussed in the German-Czech-DH-Conference on February, 20th-21st 2025 in Prague. The conference is primarily focused on history and linguistics. But we invite contributions from any field, related to one of the following questions: 1. What is the historical and present-day relevance of national languages and language borders in the practice of the humanities? 2. What can we learn from the historical-political conditions for the standardization of languages, especially in science? 3. What do AI-supported translation technologies achieve in the practice of science and how can the historical sciences in particular benefit from them? What are the limitations and risks involved? 4. What is the state of the enrichment of language data across language boundaries? Do language boundaries play any role at all in automated semantic processes? 5. What is the history of the reception of translations, especially in the German-Czech or Central European context? The Conference language will be English. Contributions to these sections can be submitted in the form of an abstract. The abstract should not exceed 1000 words and should be sent by December 15th, 2024 by email to digitalisierung(a)badw.de<mailto:[email protected]>. See Call for Papers<https://dhmuc.hypotheses.org/files/2024/11/CfP_DH-Mehrsprachigkeit_en_exten…> for the detailed announcement. Dear colleagues in the DHd-AG Multilingual DH, I would like to draw your attention to an event organized Digital Lab <https://recentglobe.uni-leipzig.de/en/infrastructure/digital-lab> at the Leipzig Research Centre Global Dynamics: Cecily Raynor (McGill University) Multilingual Digital Humanities Research: A Critical Overview In this talk, I will critically discuss multilingual digital humanities research, with a focus on practical considerations throughout the research process including the selection, assessment, and use of digital tools. We will examine some of the considerations of multilingual data-defining datasets, addressing language-specific concerns, and managing challenges such as encoding, translation, and text normalization. The session will also underscore key factors when choosing multilingual tools, including language compatibility, platform support, and data security. In addition, we will touch on the environmental and social impact of digital tools, exploring topics such as energy consumption, e-waste, and digital inclusion. Attendees will leave with practical guidance for selecting tools relevant to various stages of multilingual research, along with strategies for ensuring linguistic, cultural, and ethical awareness in their projects. 07.11.2024, 17.15-18.45h Online via Zoom: <https://uni-leipzig.zoom.us/j/67983096086?pwd=QkhNbUVpU1NyVFFPazkzRDI2KzVCQ…> https://uni-leipzig.zoom.us/j/67983096086?pwd=QkhNbUVpU1NyVFFPazkzRDI2KzVCQ… Further information: https://recentglobe.uni-leipzig.de/en/zentrum/details/event/multilingual-di… All best, Eva Ommert ⸺ Eva Ommert | Forschungsdatenmanagement Digital Lab | Research Centre Global Dynamics (ReCentGlobe) | Universität Leipzig SFB 1199: „Verräumlichungsprozesse unter Globalisierungsbedingungen“ NFDI4Memory: „National Research Data Infrastructure for the Historically Oriented Humanities“ +49 341 97 37778 | eva.ommert(a)uni-leipzig.de Nikolaistraße 6–10 | Strohsackpassage, 5. WG: [Wg-multilingualdh] Workflows for SSH Open Marketplace, Transformations, OCR/HTR workshop
by Wagner, Cosima 11 Oct '24

11 Oct '24
Liebe Listenmitglieder, anbei eine Weiterleitung aus der DARIAH Multilingual DH Working Group zu Eurer / Ihrer Information! Viele Grüße Cosima Wagner Von: Wg-multilingualdh <wg-multilingualdh-bounces(a)dariah.eu> Im Auftrag von Alíz Horváth via Wg-multilingualdh Gesendet: Freitag, 11. Oktober 2024 15:45 An: wg-multilingualdh(a)dariah.eu Betreff: [Wg-multilingualdh] Workflows for SSH Open Marketplace, Transformations, OCR/HTR workshop Dear All, I am happy to share the wonderful news that the 4 workflows that our working group produced together with the DARIAH Research Data Management Working Group in Hamburg in August -thanks to a DARIAH grant for working groups- as part of the Creating, Managing, and Archiving Textual Corpora in Under-resourced Languages workshop are now available on the SSH Open Marketplace! You can find the specific links below: Building Textual Corpora for Under-resourced Languages <https://marketplace.sshopencloud.eu/workflow/67KJnp> Managing Textual Corpora in under-resourced languages<https://marketplace.sshopencloud.eu/workflow/fbXfuH> Archiving Textual Corpora<https://marketplace.sshopencloud.eu/workflow/gDzIoY> Preparing minority or endangered language corpora for annotation in SIL FLEx<https://marketplace.sshopencloud.eu/workflow/MRkIZE> We hope that these workflows will help the broader scholarly community set the foundation of their respective DH projects towards a linguistically more inclusive DH community. On another note, I would also like to draw your attention to Transformations, a new overlay journal under the auspices of DARIAH, which has launched a call for submissions for its first issue (Deadline: October 31). You can find more information about the nature and mission of this interesting and, in many ways, non-standard journal here: https://transformations.episciences.org/. I am on the Scientific Committee of this journal, so if you have questions, please let me know. Finally, as discussed during our latest Bimonthly Short meeting, we are currently in the process of applying for funding opportunities to be able to organize a workshop on OCR/HTR techniques in under-resourced languages/scripts. If you are interested in contributing and are aware of any grant that you think would be relevant, please let us know. Wishing you a beautiful fall season from Vienna! Best regards, Alíz & Maroussia

Webinar-Hinweis zu Normdaten und Originalschrift in den USA [Eastlib] Fwd: [PCCLIST] Evaluation of non-Latin references in NARs Webinar: Registration is open
by Wagner, Cosima 13 Jun '24

Invitation to ADHO-DARIAH Multilingual DH Mini-conference at DH2024
by Till Grallert 15 May '24

15 May '24
We are writing on behalf of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) Special Interest Group Multilingual DH (http://multilingualdh.org/) and the DARIAH Working Group on Multilingual DH (https://multilingual.hypotheses.org/) We are planning a hybrid half-day pre-conference event on global multilingual Digital Humanities in conjunction with DH2024, which will take place from 6--9 August at the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media. Our pre-conference event will take place on Monday August 5, 2024 in the morning Eastern Time. Please note that presenting at DH2024 is NOT a requirement for participation in the SIG event. > > > Supported by ADHO, our SIG aims to connect scholars using digital humanities tools and methods on and in languages other than English. While the human condition is one of multilingualism, the Anglophone-centricity of digital humanities continues to be an impediment to DH scholars who work on, or teach with, materials in other languages---not to speak of the vast majority of scholars whose first language isn?t English or who do not work in English at all. Tools and tutorials are almost all designed to primarily work with English and any interaction with computers will necessitate the use of Latin-script. > > > Against the backdrop of DH2024?s theme of "reinvention & responsibility", we want to to bring practitioners of multilingual DH from ADHO constituent organisations together in order raise the profile of multilinguality and to learn from our respective experiences and approaches to the challenges and joys of multilingual DH in our specific geographic, linguistic and cultural contexts with the aim of making DH and ADHO a more openly multilingual endeavour. > > > > Our event will consist of 3 parts. The first part is actually before the meeting itself. We will ask our presenting participants to sign up using this Google Form (https://forms.gle/LAqFBYy8S7x5HdAx6) and record a short initial intervention of around 5 minutes, to be shared a week before the mini conference with all the mini conference participants. We imagine these short initial interventions to address the issue of multilinguality. We provide a few questions related to the role that the Multilingual SIG can play in our academic lives. We put together the following guiding questions to get the discussion started. You do not have to respond to all of them and please feel free to include your own. > > > What are your main experiences within the domains of digital and computational humanities? What are some of your challenges and successes? How do we build a community that not only supports one another but also pushes our academic agendas forward? What is something that needs to be urgently addressed, institutionally? How do you see ADHO SIG improving your work? How would you like to contribute to the joint effort? > > > Our goal in asking for recordings is to make sure that our communities can join us asynchronously and we can spend more time discussing and conversing among ourselves. We will share more details about this process soon. > > > In the morning of the mini-conference we will kick off with a fishbowl discussion<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishbowl_(conversation)_> to identify common tropes and interests which we will then discuss in in-person and online break-out sessions. In the afternoon, we close with a plenary session. > > > Do please let us know if you have any questions at all, and we do hope you will consider sharing your valuable knowledge and expertise at the workshop. > > > > All the best, > > > Merve and Till (for the ADHO SIG) > > Al?z and Maroussia (for the DARIAH WG) ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Till Grallert, PhD https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5739-8094 Head of Methods Innovation Lab NFDI4Memory Institut für Geschichtswissenschaften Philosophische Fakultät Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Unter den Linden 6 10099 Berlin email: till.grallert(a)hu-berlin.de mastodon: @[email protected] Latest publications - "Proper Fun?
