These dynamics raise critical questions about linguistic inclusivity, digital inequality, and the role of digital tools in multilingual contexts-intersecting with broader concerns such as accessibility, epistemic justice, and technological determinism. As digital environments become more globalized, understanding how multilingual knowledge is produced and represented across time raises the need to sustained, critical engagement from digital humanities (DH) scholars and practitioners. The Special Interest Group for the Humanities (SIGHUM, https://sighum.wordpress.com/ ) has long been committed to exploring these issues by fostering collaborations and providing a platform for dialogue among DH practitioners and scholars. This workshop will create an interactive and collaborative space to share research, tools, and practices across DH fields dealing with multilingual productions. The workshop will feature a dynamic mix of Birds of a Feather (BoF) discussions, lightning talks, and networking activities. Participants will reflect on key challenges in multilingual approaches to language variation and change showcasing projects, sharing experiences, presenting their work, and fostering future collaborations. This workshop will: 1. Facilitate critical discussions on the challenges and opportunities of multilingualism and language variation and change. 2. Highlight ongoing research, tools, and projects that address linguistic diversity and inclusivity in digital spaces. 3. Connect researchers, developers, and practitioners working on multilingual DH and knowledge production. 4. Foster collaborative opportunities and strengthen networks across institutions and disciplines. 5. Identify actionable priorities and strategies for addressing multilingual barriers in DH research and practice. We have just launched the CFP for a new edited collection that we are excited to be working on, The DeGruyter Handbook of Feminist Digital Scholarship: DS/DH at the Kitchen Table. This collection will bring together emerging and established feminist scholars and practitioners in the fields of digital scholarship, digital humanities (DH), and digital studies (DS) to examine the myriad ways in which digital scholarly work takes shape in academic and activist spaces. The objective of this collection is to draw attention to the way politics, ethics, and community can inform the development of digital research. We start with the metaphor of the kitchen table to recognize the sometimes informal spaces where this important work happens, the networks of kinship and care that sustain and drive that work, and the imperatives of these efforts, which frequently run counter to time and capital-based demands needed for promotion and tenure at academic institutions, especially in the Global North. We hope to draw attention to the valuable, but usually marginal and little recognized work that is poorly supported by academia and in the process hope to uplift and make visible the invisible labor, the extraordinary support networks, the small or “poor DH” that may have greater impact on their communities than the most prestigious and well-funded projects that are recognized as DH. The kitchen table is an informal space around which people gather to nourish themselves and others, coordinate plans for engagements in more formal spaces, build and create from supplies on hand, and do the work needed to sustain ourselves and our communities. It is a grounding space where folks plug in as needed, knowing there is always room for them when they return. Abstract: Although research and teaching in most (digital) humanities disciplines are largely multilingual, our institutional infrastructures still often fall short in accommodating our scholarly linguistic and geo-cultural diversity. Having studied the resource gap of knowledge infrastructures and its implications for advancing multilingual digital research, in this talk we argue that there is a specific role to be played by the digital humanist, first in drawing attention to the realities of our larger DH community, and second in lobbying for the design of workflows which assume multilinguality (and multiscriptual and multidirectional characteristics). A wider conversation is urgently needed amongst global DH practitioners and knowledge infrastructure designers/managers about these issues. Drawing on methods in the UX community, we have developed six data-driven user personas from the DH community (a graduate student, a professor, a librarian, an academic technology specialist, etc.) The talk will address needs and challenges of multilingual DH practitioners, through highlighting their broader relevance to the field, and staging a performative component using fictional (but revelatory) interviews with the personas. This double mode of the talk demonstrates how the theoretical implications can be translated to individual knowledge actors and ultimately lobbies for more linguistic and geocultural diversity. Liebe AG Mitglieder, ein Ko-Organisator der German-Czech DH Conference 2025 hat Jonas und mich anlässlich unseres digitalen Lunchtalks diese Woche in Graz darauf hingewiesen, dass der cfp mit Schwerpunkt "Multilingual DH" noch läuft und gerne Werbung gemacht werden soll: Konferenztitel: Standardized multilingualism in the digital humanities? Opportunities and risks of AI-supported automation Anlass/Datum: German-Czech DH-Conference, 20-21 February 2025, Prague Link zum cfp: https://dhmuc.hypotheses.org/3356 Abstract: The availability of AI-driven translation technology is changing the way the humanities work on a practical level. Text sources in different languages, whether scientific literature or primary sources, have become widely available not only by digitization but also by automated translation. The implications that the availability and adoption of translation technologies will have for the scientific practice in the humanities shall be discussed in the German-Czech-DH-Conference on February, 20th-21st 2025 in Prague. The conference is primarily focused on history and linguistics. But we invite contributions from any field, related to one of the following questions: 1. What is the historical and present-day relevance of national languages and language borders in the practice of the humanities? 2. What can we learn from the historical-political conditions for the standardization of languages, especially in science? 3. What do AI-supported translation technologies achieve in the practice of science and how can the historical sciences in particular benefit from them? What are the limitations and risks involved? 4. What is the state of the enrichment of language data across language boundaries? Do language boundaries play any role at all in automated semantic processes? 5. What is the history of the reception of translations, especially in the German-Czech or Central European context? The Conference language will be English. Contributions to these sections can be submitted in the form of an abstract.
