Best wishes, Caitlin ——— Historical Network Analysis: Applications and New Directions Under contract with Bloomsbury Academic In his canonical book, Linked , Albert-László Barabási explored the history and prevalence of networks in the world, predicting that “network thinking is poised to invade all domains of human activity and most fields of human inquiry… aimed at approaching our interlocked universe.” Often influenced by methodologies from the social sciences, this ‘network thinking’ and an interest in the use of digital and computational tools within the humanities continues to flourish. More recently, this has fostered a growing demand to expand on how such interdisciplinary approaches can provide fresh insights into historical narratives. This edited collection will explore the methods and applications of social network analysis (SNA) within historical contexts, offering compelling demonstrations – both quantitative and qualitative – of historical SNA in practice. Following an introductory chapter that provides an overview into core concepts and methodologies of SNA, individual chapters will apply these methods to real-world case studies and demonstrate the ways SNA offers new angles into historical questions. We invite abstracts of 300-500 words for chapters up to 7,500 words . Chapters should focus on applying social network analysis to historical research, applying quantitative and qualitative methods and/or approaches. These may include but are not limited to: - working with network data; - network centrality; - community detection; - network evolution; - network data visualisation; - modelling/simulating networks; - and combining network analysis with other methodologies (such as GIS or linguistics). While all historical contexts will be considered, given existing accepted contributions to the collection as a result of a conference, a preference will be made for chapters focusing on regions outside of Europe and North America. Abstracts should include details of the methods applied, the historical period studied, and the source or data type used. Submissions should also include a working title and a brief author biography (max. 150 words). We welcome abstracts from researchers of all career levels and pathways. Dear colleagues, ‘Living Books about History <https://www.livingbooksabouthistory.ch/en/>’ is a diamond open access collection of digital anthologies on current research topics. Each volume will feature an essay written by the editors as well as a selection of annotated texts and research resources. These contributions may include online resources such as open access articles, images, films, websites, or sound recordings. ‘Living Books about History’ showcases noteworthy and hitherto neglected scientific publications and sources on current topics. The selection made by the editors serves as a filter that distinguishes remarkable contributions from the mass of information available online. The collection publishes research primarily in the field of historical sciences but welcomes diverse perspectives from other disciplinary fields. Proposals may address a variety of topics, without chronological, or geographical restrictions. The selected sources and scientific papers shed light on the respective research topics from different perspectives. ‘Living Books about History’ can have different objectives, such as providing a historiographical overview of a research trend, defining the contours of a new area of study, offering an introduction to a topic, illustrating different ways of interpreting a specific corpus of sources, or analyzing the challenges of a paradigm shift. Format of ‘Living Books about History’: Each volume consists of an original introduction of 20,000 to 40,000 characters and a selection of 20 to 30 resources already available online, accompanied by a brief commentary. Each volume is assigned a DOI and an ISBN. Submission of Proposals: This call for proposals is open to advanced researchers. We welcome proposals for volumes in the form of an abstract of no more than 4,000 characters outlining the theme and focus of the project, 2-3 examples of online resources to be included in the anthology, and a short CV of the editors. Proposals may be submitted in English, French, or German. The deadline for submitting proposals is March 20, 2026. Notification of accepted proposals will be sent on April 2, 2026. [Sorry for cross-posting] HISEMOTIONS 2026 focuses on emotion detection in Early Modern Spanish epistolary texts (16th–17th centuries). Unlike most existing emotion detection tasks that target modern languages or contemporary genres (e.g., social media, reviews), this challenge explores historical linguistic variation and semantic shift, raising a new challenge for NLP systems. Participants are tasked with developing systems that automatically identify emotional content in fragments of historical Spanish letters, addressing issues such as diachronic language variation, historical semantic shifting, and domain adaptation. Dear colleagues, Sorry for crossposting. We are very happy to introduce our Call for Papers for a Special Issue in Philosophy & Digitality to you. This Special Issue has a focus on "Scope and limits of digital methods within philosophy (and text-oriented humanities)": The impact of digital methods (including the Digital Humanities) in philosophy and further text-oriented areas can be welcomed as a promise of computational enhancement, it can be felt as ‘sting of the digital’ (Krämer 2025) or can be critically interpreted as a positivistic displacement of the traditional humanities. We have—to some extent—small knowledge about the philosophy and theory of the digital. But what do we know about doing philosophy under the methodological conditions of digitality—including or excluding methods of the Digital Humanities? This Special Issue aims to bring four perspectives together under the general heading of “Digital Philosophy”: 1. Is there a praxeology of philosophy done digitally yet? What are concrete applications of computational methods towards genuinely philosophical research questions? 2. What is the current state of the critical epistemological discussion of digital methods in philosophy and text-oriented humanities? 3. What about the role of digital research infrastructures and working environments as prerequisites of discovery and knowledge? 4. What are the changing necessities of digital skills and competences used in philosophy and text-oriented disciplines? Of special interest is the correlation between these aspects.
