The deadline to submit the Application is June 28th, 2024, 2pm CEST Co-funded under the European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND and coordinated by the Università di Bologna in collaboration with the Universities of the Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy), the FutureData4EU project provides 53 positions for doctoral programs in seven thematic areas related to Big Data: * Health; * Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society; * Civil Security for Society; * Digital, Industry and Space; * Climate, Energy and Mobility; * Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment; * Enabling Technologies. The project will run for five years and will recruit 53 candidates through an international call for applications, of which 21 will be assigned to Università di Bologna, 9 each to Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, Università di Parma, Università di Ferrara, 3 to the Polo Territoriale di Piacenza of Politecnico di Milano and 2 to the Campus di Piacenza of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Selected candidates will be enrolled in the doctoral courses of each University and will be contracted with a research fellowship (“assegno di ricerca”) of 36 months. This time, we'll have Prof. Lev Manovich (CUNY), a prominent theorist of digital culture and the author of the term 'Cultural Analytics'. Title: Thinking about Culture (not) as Data Abstract: Why do we often approach cultural data using ideas developed in the 18th and 19th century, before digital computers and big data? Can we think about cultural objects and histories without using categories? What can AI see in cultural artefacts, and what it remains blind to? The theme for this year's event is Inclusivity Across Sectors / Uileghabhálacht Thar Earnálacha, highlighting one of the Association's Core Values. One of the dreams of information and communication technologies is that of equitable and open access to information, to services, and to opportunities. We know, however, that this dream is not always reflected in reality - especially in the digital humanities, where the expertise, skills and knowledge of a broad range of sectors, disciplines and organisations inform everything we do. It is necessary to constantly challenge our own claims and understanding of inclusivity. This inevitably involves exploring the situated and intersectional inequities of technological systems, and the cultures and societies that build them. The event will examine inclusive approaches to digital humanities research and practice broadly conceptualised, with an emphasis on intersectional approach to examining barriers to inclusion within different national, organisational, and disciplinary contexts. We are pleased to announce that our keynote roundtable will be moderated by Aoibhie McCarthy, artistic director at Sample Studios, who will be in conversation with Valerie Byrne (Cork City Council), Melissa Terras (University of Edinburgh), and Francesca Farmer (Royal Albert Memorial Museum/University of Exeter). The event will be held in-person at University College Cork, with portions of the event available to view online. The fee for attending the event in-person will be £35. Dear European Digital Humanists, we extended the deadline for proposal submissions for the international conference *"European Cultural Memory in its Digitalization - Inventing Cultural Memory in the 21st Century?"* to *19.5.2024* The concept of cultural heritage has been in circulation for decades (e.g. UNESCO convention 1972) if not centuries (e.g. discussion on repatriation of artworks at the Congress of Vienna, 1815), in scientific, cultural and policy contexts. The extensive digitization of collections in archives, museums, and libraries, as well as the digital dissemination and mediation of cultural artefacts has also been framed as supporting the process of Europeanization. For instance, the mission of Europeana documents this interest in creating a European cultural identity (Capurro 2023). The very idea of a European heritage is embedded with the vision and policies of the European Union, fostering a shared European identity and memory on the grounds of a common culture and history as well as the rejection of the violent experiences of the 20th century (Radonic 2023). The conference “European Cultural Memory in its Digitalization” focuses on the intersection of cultural heritage, digital transformation and Europeanisation processes, also responding to the recent dynamic trends in Artificial Intelligence. It aims to question and problematize dimensions of cultural heritage from the European past in the context of contemporary social, cultural and technological transformations. It thus takes into account both the transformative (technological) and representational (discursive) potentials of digitalization of cultural heritage. This conference will discuss the European and national cultural and research policy strategies in the context of cultural heritage and its digital transformation in general and through the lens of specific projects engaging in this process. Furthermore, recent collaborations between digital humanities and cultural heritage organizations and researchers will be discussed. By contextualizing heritage in the European digital society agenda, general digital transformation processes, datafication and artificial intelligence developments, we will drive forward current debates in Digital Humanities and Memory Studies. The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers and scholars from various disciplines and reflect on the state of research in the field, opening up fresh discussions and dialogue. The HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC) facilitates text and data mining uses of the HathiTrust (HT) corpus, which contains over 18 million items digitised by partner libraries. This massive collection is available for computational analysis for users worldwide: the HTRC Analytics site also offers web-based, click-and-run tools to perform computational text analysis on volumes in the HathiTrust Digital Library, including topic modeling, Named Entity Recognition and token count. CFP Extension: Born-Digital Collections, Archives and Memory

Dear colleagues, The Digital Humanities Research Hub at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, invites submissions for the inaugural Born-Digital Collections, Archives and Memory conference, to be hosted at the University of London and online from 2-4 April 2025 in collaboration with colleagues from Aarhus University, the British Library, and the Endangered Material Knowledge Programme at the British Museum. The deadline for submissions for the Born-Digital Collections, Archives and Memory Conference has been extended to Friday, 7 June 2024. We are also delighted to announce our first Keynote Speaker, Dorothy Berry, Digital Curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, where her focus is on enhancing public access to digital cultural heritage materials and creating new virtual environments for exploring Black history. Her work explores the intersections of information discovery and African American history, spanning from researching early mentions of African American concert music performances in newspaper databases to curating exhibits showcasing transatlantic art inspired by African American film.
