Dear all, I am looking for a PhD candidate for the following project: "Contextual scientometrics – Uncovering and understanding referencing patterns to the ancient canon in modern scholarly discourses" The candidate will primarily work with the Computational Humanities group at Leipzig University, but also visit project partners at KU Leuven (6 months) and the German National Library (3 months) as part of the PhD project. (Apologies for potential cross-posting) Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC) is a key academic conference for research results and new developments in the area of the Semantic Web and Knowledge Graphs. ESWC 2024 marks the 21st edition, which will take place from May 26 – 30, 2024, in Heraklion, Greece. Call for Papers: Industry Track The ESWC 2024 industry track is a forum for exchanging ideas, results, and lessons learned amongst Semantic Web researchers, technologists and product leaders across industry and academia. The goal is to learn from the process of bringing cutting edge Semantic Web research to the state of the art applications and to align current research efforts with existing real world requirements that justify the adoption of novel approaches in the face of otherwise unfeasible challenges. Its primary objectives include identifying application domains of Semantic Web technologies with significant business value, presenting the state of adoption in industry, discussing challenges and potential solutions, and exploring the combination of Semantic Web technologies with other AI disciplines. Dear all, The UK-Ireland Digital Humanities Association is pleased to announce the call for proposals for the 2024 Annual Event<https://digitalhumanities-uk-ie.org/2024-annual-event/>, to be held at University College Cork from 4 - 5 June 2024. The theme for this year's event is Inclusivity Across Sectors / Uileghabhálacht Thar Earnálacha, highlighting one of the Association's Core Values and a key focus of the Association's work this year. We encourage submissions that address questions of inclusivity broadly understood, and particularly ones that address interdisciplinary or cross-sector perspectives on inclusion. This can include proposals that examine inclusive approaches to digital humanities research and practice broadly conceptualised. We also welcome proposals that take an intersectional approach to examining barriers to inclusion within different national, organisational, and disciplinary contexts. We invite all those using digital methods and strategies in the arts, humanities, cultural heritage sector, and creative & cultural industries to submit a proposal. Dear all, I'm looking to hire a post-doctoral researcher in human computation and/or knowledge representation for my upcoming ERC-funded project that starts in May 2024: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/a-foundation-for-em… This position is for a fixed term of 36 months and based at the newly founded Multimodality Research Group in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/ PROJECT: The project develops novel methods for studying the phenomenon of multimodality, that is, how communication and interaction rely on intentional combinations of multiple 'modes' of expression. The project will use crowdsourcing for gathering human insights at scale, which are then processed and searched for patterns using neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence, such as graph neural networks. The methods and resources developed in the project will enable developing empirically founded theories about multimodal communication in the domain of everyday cultural artefacts. The data studied in the project includes, for example, school textbooks, user-generated explanation videos on social media, news broadcasts, instruction manuals and online newspapers. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher will be responsible for developing graph-based representations of multimodal discourse, that is, how different modes of expression – such as written and spoken language, photographs, diagrams, embodied communication, etc. – are combined in page-based and audiovisual media studied in the project. Insights about multimodal discourse are collected at scale using crowdsourcing and compiled into graph-based representations, which is why the appointee is also expected to participate in designing crowdsourcing pipelines and computational methods for quality control and knowledge representation. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in computer science, digital humanities or a related field. A deep understanding of modern approaches to knowledge representation (especially knowledge graphs) and/or human computation (crowdsourcing or citizen science) is considered essential for the planned research. A successful candidate should also have a solid understanding of programming languages such as Python and libraries used for processing and managing data (e.g. pandas, PyTorch, NetworkX). Experience in collaborative development of research software is considered an advantage.
