Dear all, I am very happy to invite you all virtually (except from those in Montréal) to the fourth annual Stéfan Sinclair-CRIHN lecture on Monday 2 December 2024 @ 9am at Concordia University (Milieux Resource Room EV 11.705, Concordia University, 1515 St. Catherine’s Street W.) and online. Named in honour of Stéfan Sinclair, one of the founders of the Centre de recherche interuniversitaire sur les humanités numériques (CRIHN <http://crihn.org/>) in 2013, this conference will feature a keynote delivered by Isabel Pedersen entitled "Create Me, Break Me, Remember Me: Art and AI in an Age of Reinvention". Based at the Ontario Tech University, Dr. Isabel Pedersen focuses on embodied computing, algorithmic culture, augmented reality, emergent media, and AI ethics. Her talk will be followed by a round-table chaired by Geoffrey Rockwell (University of Alberta) with two graduate students, Corina MacDonald (Concordia University) and Alice Truc (Université de Montréal) presenting their research. On behalf of the Canadian Society for Digital Humanities <https://csdh-schn.org/>, we invite all interested parties to submit proposals for the annual conference, hosted at George Brown College in Toronto this summer as part of the 2025 Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities <https://www.federationhss.ca/en/congress2025>. This year's theme for Congress is *Reframing Togetherness* - togetherness and community are fraught concepts, and we welcome papers that think carefully about creative and ethical ways of attending to difference and togetherness within communities and across disciplines. Digital humanities work offers new possibilities for fostering critical forms of difference from ‘traditional’ humanities, and we welcome papers that think about these implications of DH work. Prospettive Critiche e Intersezioni nelle Digital Humanities. Il convegno interdisciplinare intende esplorare più in dettaglio il concetto di “lack of cultural criticism” (Fiormonte 2012) e di “situated knowledge” (Haraway 1988), nelle loro molteplici declinazioni nell’ambito delle DH: in particolare, il ruolo attivo e incarnato del ricercatore, le opportunità derivanti dall’applicazione delle tecnologie informatiche agli studi umanistici e le sfide legate all’impiego di strumenti tecnologici, solitamente considerati neutrali, ma che influenzano profondamente le epistemologie e le pratiche degli studi umanistici. Accogliamo prospettive provenienti dall’analisi storica e filologica qualitativa e quantitativa, dalla critica culturale e dalle discipline sociologiche, letterarie, artistiche e linguistiche supportate da approcci digitali e computazionali. Critical Perspectives and Intersections in the Digital Humanities. The interdisciplinary symposium aims to further explore the concepts of “lack of cultural criticism” (Fiormonte 2012) and “situated knowledge” (Haraway 1988), which have been conjugated in their multiple facets in the field of DH. In particular, it will focus on the active and embodied role of the researcher, on the opportunities created by the application of Information Technology to the Humanities, and on the challenges presented by the use of technological tools, that are usually considered neutral, but which deeply influence the epistemologies and practices of the Humanities themselves. We encourage perspectives drawn from qualitative and quantitative historical and philological analysis, cultural criticism, and sociological, literary, artistic and linguistic disciplines, supported by digital and computational approaches. Attention will be paid to the linguistic, geographical and cultural hegemonies of DH, to the major issues of communication and the so-called “informatics of domination”, to the bias introduced by the extended use of Large Language Models, and to the complexity of interactions between Artificial Intelligence and artistic and cultural heritages and practices. This last topic will also be considered from the didactic perspective of DH and/or through its tools.
