Hello ~ The ability to read, understand, and communicate data as information is fast becoming essential for education and employment. Through July 31, you are invited to get a jump start on your skills-or advance them to a new level-for free with Constellate<https://constellate.org/>, a service from not-for-profit ITHAKA that provides all the tools for proficiency in data analysis and digital literacy. Dear ADHO Group, Towards a National Collection has an exciting open commission research call on Policy & Research Analysis to explore and collate the key relevant policies that should be considered in any design of a UK digital collections research infrastructure. This could include policies on accessibility, open access, digital skills, documentation standards, levelling up, among others. The objective of the consultancy is to analyse and distil the findings and recommendations of the research projects funded and commissioned by Towards a National Collection, and to match them to key relevant policies of UKRI, AHRC, the cultural heritage sector, as well as the UK and devolved governments. 1 PhD position in digital paleography

Dear European digital humanists, the French National Research Center is opening a position for a PhD candidate in digital paleography. Applications are to be submitted by June 24th, 2022 for a start in the autumn 2022. The PhD candidate will work in the context of an interdisciplinary research project of the IRHT (Institute for Research and History of Texts, CNRS UPR841) <https://www.irht.cnrs.fr/> and the Laboratoire d’Informatique Gaspard Monge <https://siteigm.univ-mlv.fr/>(CNRS UMR8049) <https://siteigm.univ-mlv.fr/> . Call for participation at HHAI2022 Workshops: 13-14. June 2022 Main Conference: 14.-17. June 2022 Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence (HHAI) is the first international conference focusing on the study of Artificial Intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively and purposefully with humans, amplifying instead of replacing human intelligence. HHAI aims for AI systems that assist humans and vice versa, emphasizing the need for adaptive, collaborative, responsible, interactive and human-centered intelligent systems that leverage human strengths and compensate for human weaknesses, while taking into account social, ethical and legal considerations. This field of study is driven by current developments in AI, but also requires fundamentally new approaches and solutions. In addition, we need collaboration with areas such as HCI, cognitive and social sciences, philosophy & ethics, complex systems, and others. In this first international conference, we invite scholars from these fields to participate at HHAI2022. We want to offer the opportunity to build a culture together and embrace diversity and inclusion as central principles. The Leipzig Summer University is special because it not only seeks to offer a space for the discussion and acquisition of new knowledge, skills and competences in those computer technologies which play a central role in Humanities Computing and which determine every day more and more the work done in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences, as well as in publishing, libraries, and archives etc., but because it tries to integrate these technologies, methods and tools with the questions Digital Humanities pose about the consequences and implications of their application to cultural artefacts of all kinds. It is special furthermore because it consciously aims at confronting the so-called Gender Divide, i.e. the under-representation of women in the domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Germany, Europe and many parts of the world, by relying on the challenges that the Humanities with their complex data and their wealth of women represent for Computer Science and Engineering and the further development of the latter, on the overcoming of the borders between the so-called hard and soft sciences and on the integration of Humanities, Computer Science and Engineering. Multimodal Digital Oral History: The Forward-View Seminar If the first “digital turn” in oral history was largely a passive affair, concerned with the online dissemination of retro-digitised and born digital oral history recordings, what might the incipient “sound as data” turn herald? What gains and losses might result from data-driven enquiries of oral history interviews as sonic or multimodal artefacts, individually or at scale? Which digital tools, processes and platforms can best be utilized in the data-driven analysis of oral history as sonic and multimodal artefact? What rationale and ethical commitments should guide processes of tool selection and creation for this work? What new research questions and trans-disciplinary collaborations may follow? And what are the implications for oral history of participating in this research, as may be illuminated through the emerging sub-field of digital hermeneutics? This seminar series takes as its jumping off point, that the time is right to pursue a Multimodal Digital Oral History, or one that engages with oral history artefacts in all their representational modalities: transcript, sound, waveform, metadata and more. Accordingly, it features papers that explore any of the questions posed above, and in doing so contribute to the task of imagining a Multimodal Digital Oral History turn, where the digital is active rather than passive; where digital oral history modalities are positioned as analytical categories of inquiry and also as sites of data-driven analysis; where reflexivity is a core aspect of digitally-mediated research; and as an endeavour that nevertheless remains attuned to oral history as a subjective and intersubjective meaning-making process, situated in space, time, culture and technology. June 2022 Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence (HHAI) is the first international conference focusing on the study of Artificial Intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively and purposefully with humans, amplifying instead of replacing human intelligence. HHAI aims for AI systems that assist humans and vice versa, emphasizing the need for adaptive, collaborative, responsible, interactive and human-centered intelligent systems that leverage human strengths and compensate for human weaknesses, while taking into account social, ethical and legal considerations. This field of study is driven by current developments in AI, but also requires fundamentally new approaches and solutions. In addition, we need collaboration with areas such as HCI, cognitive and social sciences, philosophy & ethics, complex systems, and others. In this first international conference, we invite scholars from these fields to participate at HHAI2022. We want to offer the opportunity to build a culture together and embrace diversity and inclusion as central principles. Categories allow for the linguistic labeling of texts or (textual) phenomena, as well as for their combination or differentiation based on selected relevant features. By selecting suitable parameters for grouping, categories usually allow for a systematic reduction of complexity and the ordering of complex textual artifacts and data sets, which in turn considerably facilitates both their analysis and the communication of analysis results. At the same time, category systems offer the possibility of a detailed text systematization or description through the formation of subcategories. If category systems are created as ontologies or taxonomies, they can additionally provide information about the relationship of relevant (text) phenomena to each other. Moreover, since the creation of categories usually requires the specification of explicit definitions of terms or categories, the scholarly exchange of information on subjects in the humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences is greatly facilitated – among other things, through easier understanding and better comparability of statements. While work on and with categories in the traditional humanities remains the exception rather than the rule and is limited to certain sub-disciplines, it is omnipresent in the digital humanities due to the influence of standards from the formal sciences. This omnipresence of category-system development in the digital humanities is in stark contrast to the lack of systematic reflection in this field of research. This concerns questions as: Which categories or which types of category systems are appropriate for (certain) objects in the humanities? What determines the validity and fruitfulness of categories in this field? Which – existing or new – procedures can be used to develop and revise a category system? We invite contributions addressing these questions. While the work on and with categories used for text annotation and analysis is the one focus, a second focus is on systems and methods for the organization and classification of texts in the context of databases – as well as the connection between these two fields of work in which category systems play a role. This also includes work on ontologies or the establishment and revision of systems for text analyses from information science, as well as mathematical category theory, which has already been successfully applied to knowledge representation and management in the natural sciences. Contributions should be based on concrete studies in the field of the digital humanities and related fields or provide an information science perspective that has been, or can be, adapted in the digital humanities. Contributions about concrete studies should address one or more of the following questions: Through which steps did the development of the analysis concepts used in the analysis take place? Who was involved and when? Were existing categories used or developed further? Which development steps were defined in advance, which ones resulted from the process? Was the type of category system to be developed – e.g. ontology, taxonomy, typology or network of concepts – defined? Why was this form chosen? Were there problems with the categories? Which adjustments of the categories or the development process were necessary? To what extent and, if applicable, how was the development of the analysis categories documented? What recommendations can be derived from experience for similar approaches to category development? How does the procedure relate to non-digital procedures that are common in the original discipline? Contributions from an information science perspective should address one or more of the following questions: Which aspects of the work done in computer science concerning ontology languages, methodologies, development environments and tools (for visualization, documentation and validation) can fruitfully be applied to the field of digital humanities/social sciences? What are the prerequisites for an application of such computer science or mathematics approaches for working with categories in text analyses? In which way might the adaptation of computer science research on category development to other fields pose difficulties? What are possible solutions? On the Margins: Hypertext, Electronic Literature, Digital Humanities Senate House, University of London London, UK, December 15-16, 2022 https://easychair.org/cfp/Margins22 Since its early days as a series of experimental approaches, the Hypertext paradigm has proven itself vital in dealing with what Ted Nelson called “deep structural changes in the arrangements of ideas and phenomena.” Whether we conceive of Hypertext as non-sequential writing that branches and allows choices to the reader, or as a body of written or pictorial material interconnected in such a complex way that it could not conveniently be represented on paper, thinking in Hypertext has become a ubiquitous part of everyday life. In our research lives, Hypertext technologies and methodologies are similarly amongst the most prominent and visible outcomes of the “digital age.” Mature products of its investigation by research communities can be found in the work of Electronic Literature scholars and practitioners, Hypertext and Hypermedia specialists, and researchers in the Digital Humanities. However, owing perhaps to their disparate angles of investigation and the sheer scope of activity, these research communities remain fragmented and somehow “on the margins” of wider Humanities and Computer Science scholarship. We invite members of the Hypertext, Electronic Literature and Digital Humanities communities, including PhD and Early Career Researchers, to come together for a two-day conference reflecting on how Hypertext has shaped our research and creative practices, to build research opportunities between sympathetic communities, and to envision how to push the boundaries of Hypertext beyond its current incarnations. We want to inaugurate a space that will promote debate and connections, building new understanding at the crossroads between disciplines. We are planning to hold the conference in person, but can make arrangements to show pre-recorded presentations if you are unable to attend. 12th EUROPEAN SUMMER UNIVERSITY IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES "CULTURE & TECHNOLOGY" - 2nd to 12th August 2022 UNIVERSITY OF LEIPZIG After one year without a European Summer University in Digital Humanities “Culture & Technology” and another year with an online edition of the 11th ESU DH C&T, all this because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 12th edition of the Summer University will take place in Leipzig in person again, from the 2nd to the 12th August 2022. The number of participants in each workshop is limited to 10. Workshops are structured in such a way that participants can either take the two blocks of one workshop or two blocks from different workshops. The "workload" of an active participation in the European Summer University corresponds to 6 ETCS points. Like in former years the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) makes available generous support to up to 20 alumni / alumnae of German universities. As soon as other scholarships are confirmed, we will send out a separate announcement. The Summer University is directed at 60 participants from all over Europe and beyond. It wants to bring together (doctoral) students, young scholars and academics from the Arts and Humanities, Library Sciences, Social Sciences, the Arts and Engineering and Computer Sciences as equal partners to an interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and experience in a multilingual and multicultural context and thus create the conditions for future project-based co-operations. The Leipzig Summer University is special because it not only seeks to offer a space for the discussion and acquisition of new knowledge, skills and competences in those computer technologies which play a central role in Humanities Computing and which determine every day more and more the work done in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences, as well as in publishing, libraries, and archives etc., but because it tries to integrate these technologies, methods and tools with the questions Digital Humanities pose about the consequences and implications of their application to cultural artefacts of all kinds. It is special furthermore because it consciously aims at confronting the so-called Gender Divide, i.e. the under-representation of women in the domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Germany, Europe and many parts of the world, by relying on the challenges that the Humanities with their complex data and their wealth of women represent for Computer Science and Engineering and the further development of the latter, on the overcoming of the borders between the so-called hard and soft sciences and on the integration of Humanities, Computer Science and Engineering. Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence (HHAI) is the first international conference focusing on the study of Artificial Intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively and purposefully with humans, amplifying instead of replacing human intelligence. HHAI aims for AI systems that assist humans and vice versa, emphasizing the need for adaptive, collaborative, responsible, interactive and human-centered intelligent systems that leverage human strengths and compensate for human weaknesses, while taking into account social, ethical and legal considerations. This field of study is driven by current developments in AI, but also requires fundamentally new approaches and solutions. In addition, we need collaboration with areas such as HCI, cognitive and social sciences, philosophy & ethics, complex systems, and others. In this first international conference, we invite scholars from these fields to submit their best original, new as well as in progress, visionary and existing work on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence. We welcome research on the different challenges in Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence. The following list of topics is illustrative, not exhaustive. * Human-AI interaction and collaboration * Adaptive human-AI co-learning and co-creation * Learning, reasoning and planning with humans and machines in the loop * User modelling and personalisation * Integration of learning and reasoning * Transparent, explainable and accountable AI * Fair, ethical, responsible and trustworthy AI * Societal awareness of AI * Multimodal machine perception of real world settings * Social signal processing We welcome contributions about all types of technology, from robots and conversational agents to multi-agent systems and machine learning models. This first edition of Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence is organized by the Hybrid Intelligence Centre (https://www.hybrid-intelligence-centre.nl/ ) and the Humane-AI European Network (https://www.humane-ai.eu/ ) . Paper types In this conference, we wish to stimulate the exchange of novel ideas and interdisciplinary perspectives. To do this, we will accept three different types of papers: * Full papers present original, impactful work (12 pages excluding references) * Working papers present work in progress or new and visionary ideas (8 pages excluding. references) * Extended abstracts present existing, pre-published work (4 pages excluding references) Accepted full papers will be published in the Proceedings of the First International Conference on Hybrid Human-Machine Intelligence, in the Frontiers of AI series by IOS Press. Abstracts of working papers and existing work can be included in these proceedings, unless the authors request the abstracts to remain unpublished. All accepted papers will receive a minimum slot for oral presentation of 15 minutes. Depending on the content and quality of the work, some papers will be selected for longer presentations. Reviewing process & Submission guidelines Reviewing will be single anonymized, as we are welcoming existing work and references to previous work from the submitting authors. On acceptance, at least 1 author should attend the conference. A significant contribution is expected from all authors. A justification of contributions in the paper is appreciated. All studies involving human participants should have received human-research ethics consent from the relevant institutions and mention this in the paper. Call for papers Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence (HHAI) June 13-17 2022, Amsterdam Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence (HHAI) is the first international conference focusing on the study of Artificial Intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively and purposefully with humans, amplifying instead of replacing human intelligence. HHAI aims for AI systems that assist humans and vice versa, emphasizing the need for adaptive, collaborative, responsible, interactive and human-centered intelligent systems that leverage human strengths and compensate for human weaknesses, while taking into account social, ethical and legal considerations. This field of study is driven by current developments in AI, but also requires fundamentally new approaches and solutions. In addition, we need collaboration with areas such as HCI, cognitive and social sciences, philosophy & ethics, complex systems, and others. In this first international conference, we invite scholars from these fields to submit their best original, new as well as in progress, visionary and existing work on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence. We welcome research on the different challenges in Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence. Paper types In this conference, we wish to stimulate the exchange of novel ideas and interdisciplinary perspectives. To do this, we will accept three different types of papers: * Full papers present original, impactful work (12 pages excluding references) * Working papers present work in progress or new and visionary ideas (8 pages excluding. references) * Extended abstracts present existing, pre-published work (4 pages excluding references) Accepted full papers will be published in the Proceedings of the First International Conference on Hybrid Human-Machine Intelligence, in the Frontiers of AI series by IOS Press. Abstracts of working papers and existing work can be included in these proceedings, unless the authors request the abstracts to remain unpublished. All accepted papers will receive a minimum slot for oral presentation of 15 minutes. Depending on the content and quality of the work, some papers will be selected for longer presentations. In this virtual series running from February to June 2022, three scholars will present their work on image processing in the context of cultural heritage. Tuesday 22 February 2022 at 2 pm CET Thomas Smits, University of Antwerp, “The Visual Digital Turn: Computer Vision and the humanities” https://www.kbr.be/en/agenda/computer-vision-and-the-humanities/ Abstract Digital humanities research has focused primarily on the analysis of texts. However, digital and digitized sources also contain large numbers of images. Using several research projects as examples, I’ll discuss how scholars in the humanities can apply computer vision techniques in their research. Among other things, these new visual AI methods allow researchers to analyze patterns of (re)circulation of images, analyze patterns of media (use), analyze patterns in visual content at scale, analyze patterns of representations (gender/social class), analyze patterns in visual scenes and analyze patterns of visual style. In short, I’ll show how these techniques have opened up the visual side of the digital turn. Tuesday 15th March 2022 at 2 pm CET Apostolos Antonacopoulos, University of Salford, Manchester, UK “Understanding information-rich documents: experiences with historical England & Wales censuses” https://www.kbr.be/en/agenda/dhs-censuses/ Abstract In the Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis (PRImA) research Lab, from the University of Salford, UK, great efforts have been devoted to the investigation and analysis of cultural heritage materials especially using image processing and pattern recognition techniques. In the last a few years, a series of large-scale projects, including IMPACT - Improving Access to Text, Europeana Newspapers, Succeed - Support Action Centre of Competence in Digitisation, EMPO - Early Modern OCR project and Census 1961 were being hosted by PRImA. In this talk, Prof. Antonacopoulos, the founder and leading professor of PRImA, will give his insights on the processing and exploitation of cultural heritage materials. A special focus will be given to the ongoing project of Census-1961, where the main objective is to extract and model historical population census information using computer vision techniques. Monday 11th April 2022 at 2 pm CET Clemens Neudecker, Berlin State Library, Berlin, Germany “New Tools for Old Documents – Layout Analysis and OCR with Deep Learning and Heuristics” https://www.kbr.be/en/agenda/dhs-layout-analysis/ Abstract This talk will discuss the main achievements and experiences of the QURATOR project at the Berlin State Library (SBB) for document layout analysis. Historical documents that are being digitized in large quantities by libraries and archives frequently exhibit a wide array of features that disturb layout analysis, such as complex layouts with multiple columns, drop capitals and illustrations, skewed or curved text lines, noise, annotations, etc. In order to deal with these challenges and defects, a robust document layout analysis was developed that is implemented by pixel-wise segmentation using convolutional neural networks. In addition, heuristic methods are applied to detect columns or marginalia, and to determine the reading order of text regions. A key objective lies in feeding the resulting outputs to subsequent processes like a text recognition (OCR) engine or an image similarity search. Practical information: These talks will be held, via Microsoft Teams, in English, with questions in French, Dutch or English. Tibet, Economic Development and the Affective Politics of Online State Media in the PRC - Séagh Kehoe (University of Westminster) Wednesday 26 January 2022, 4-5pm GMT Abstract: Chinese state media coverage about Tibet has long been dominated by stories about state-led economic growth. In recent years, the focus of these stories has shifted from macro-level descriptions of infrastructure, science and technology, income, and education, to a more granular approach that foregrounds dramatized and emotionalized narratives of individual Tibetans engaging in and reaping the benefits of economic development. Seeking to understand this trend, this paper examines the increasing production and circulation of affect in online state media stories about economic development in Tibet. Through a selection of texts, videos and social media posts, it analyses how and why repeated references to hardship, happiness and gratitude have come to characterize these stories and how they work to valorize Tibetan diligence, self-responsibility, and patriotism, obscure structural inequalities and consolidate Chinese rule over Tibet. In doing so, this paper shows the increasingly sophisticated and creative ways in which the state has harnessed the power of affect and new media to manage public opinion about Tibet in the PRC and reinforce political power. Speaker bio: Dr Séagh Kehoe is a Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of Westminster. Their research interests include Chinese media representations of ethnicity and race, gender and sexuality, nationalism, and military. **With apologies for cross-posting** SECOND CALL FOR APPLICATIONS Researcher in computational linguistics with scientific programming expertisE The Institute for Applied Linguistics (IAL) at Eurac Research (Bolzano, Italy) is looking for a Researcher in computational linguistics with scientific programming expertise to implement and adapt software of interest for the IAL to support needs such as selecting, installing and adapting desktop or online tools to explore and annotate textual data or to process text data for linguistic purposes using well-established libraries. The tasks of the new Researcher will also depend on the experience (s)he will bring to the team and how it complements the skills of the researchers in the LT group (s)he will join. One of the first tasks of the selected candidate will be the development of a gamified web application for data crowdsourcing in the context of the Zeit.shift project (https://all4ling.eurac.edu/zeitshift/) However, the new collaborator will become a key figure in the coming linguaXlab linguistic services centre of the Institute, where (s)he will implement and apply technologies related to the Computational Linguistics and Digital Humanities activities of the LT group with a mid to long term perspective. This includes maintaining existing systems and platforms, localising CLARIN services (https://clarin.eurac.edu/) working with language data from South Tyrol and contributing to the growth of the Institute through the development of new projects and the pursuit of funding opportunities. Overall, we are looking for a cooperative and proactive team member with an interdisciplinary and applied research profile. The ideal candidate would have a sound technical background and previous working experience within a linguistics/humanities research context and be equipped with a decisive technology/infrastructure awareness and related expertise. Tasks: * Develop (gamified) web applications. * Upgrade and maintain desktop and online tools already in use at the IAL with new features. * Create or upgrade scripts to process textual data. * Document all code and scripts to ensure their long-term maintenance. * Workflow documentation for technical pipelines. * Technical consulting and requirements specification for web portals, for text searches, and citizen science interaction (i.e. required data formats, portability/reusability/adaptability, etc.). * Participation in the Institute’s general research activities and in activities of the language technology group including scientific publications, funding acquisition, dissemination activities, etc. Requirements: * MSc/MA/Diploma in Computer Science or other relevant field, or a BSC in Computer Science or other relevant field and 3 years of work experience as a programmer. * A record of past relevant activities (documented by, for instance, freely accessible code repositories, recommendation letters; Stack Overflow or GitHub profiles advantageous etc.) allowing us to evaluate the extent of the candidate’s skills. * Knowledge of at least two programming languages among Python, Perl, and Java. Familiarity with other relevant languages such as Ruby or languages used for text processing tools is a plus. * Experience with building back-end/front-end web applications (JavaScript/PHP/Node.js, SQL, etc.) using database frameworks and server scripting. * Good command of English, and both German and Italian (or the willingness to learn and become proficient in German and/or Italian). * Outstanding social, organisational & communicative skills, including careful scheduling and excellent management of tasks. * Ability to work in a research team and in a flexible and interdisciplinary setting. * Experience within interdisciplinary projects involving several partners and geared towards humanities infrastructure and/or supporting the work of humanities researchers is a strong advantage. * Willingness to move to South Tyrol or to its vicinity. **With apologies for cross-posting** Researcher in computational linguistics with scientific programming expertisE The Institute for Applied Linguistics (IAL) at Eurac Research (Bolzano, Italy) is looking for a Researcher in computational linguistics with scientific programming expertise to implement and adapt software of interest for the IAL to support needs such as selecting, installing and adapting desktop or online tools to explore and annotate textual data or to process text data for linguistic purposes using well-established libraries. The tasks of the new Researcher will also depend on the experience (s)he will bring to the team and how it complements the skills of the researchers in the LT group (s)he will join. One of the first tasks of the selected candidate will be the development of a gamified web application for data crowdsourcing in the context of the Zeit.shift project (https://all4ling.eurac.edu/zeitshift/) However, the new collaborator will become a key figure in the coming linguaXlab linguistic services centre of the Institute, where (s)he will implement and apply technologies related to the Computational Linguistics and Digital Humanities activities of the LT group with a mid to long term perspective. This includes maintaining existing systems and platforms, localising CLARIN services (https://clarin.eurac.edu/) working with language data from South Tyrol and contributing to the growth of the Institute through the development of new projects and the pursuit of funding opportunities. Overall, we are looking for a cooperative and proactive team member with an interdisciplinary and applied research profile. The ideal candidate would have a sound technical background and previous working experience within a linguistics/humanities research context and be equipped with a decisive technology/infrastructure awareness and related expertise. Tasks: * Develop (gamified) web applications. * Upgrade and maintain desktop and online tools already in use at the IAL with new features. * Create or upgrade scripts to process textual data. * Document all code and scripts to ensure their long-term maintenance. * Workflow documentation for technical pipelines. * Technical consulting and requirements specification for web portals, for text searches, and citizen science interaction (i.e. required data formats, portability/reusability/adaptability, etc.). * Participation in the Institute’s general research activities and in activities of the language technology group including scientific publications, funding acquisition, dissemination activities, etc. Requirements: * MSc/MA/Diploma in Computer Science or other relevant field, or a BSC in Computer Science or other relevant field and 3 years of work experience as a programmer. * A record of past relevant activities (documented by, for instance, freely accessible code repositories, recommendation letters; Stack Overflow or GitHub profiles advantageous etc.) allowing us to evaluate the extent of the candidate’s skills. * Knowledge of at least two programming languages among Python, Perl, and Java. Familiarity with other relevant languages such as Ruby or languages used for text processing tools is a plus. * Experience with building back-end/front-end web applications (JavaScript/PHP/Node.js, SQL, etc.) using database frameworks and server scripting. * Good command of English, and both German and Italian (or the willingness to learn and become proficient in German and/or Italian). * Outstanding social, organisational & communicative skills, including careful scheduling and excellent management of tasks. * Ability to work in a research team and in a flexible and interdisciplinary setting. * Experience within interdisciplinary projects involving several partners and geared towards humanities infrastructure and/or supporting the work of humanities researchers is a strong advantage. * Willingness to move to South Tyrol or to its vicinity. Would you like to get into contact with industrial partners such as KB, RTL, Axini, SIG or Philips and solve a case together? Then apply for the “ICT with Industry 2022” Lorentz Workshop. Every year, the Lorentz Center and NWO together organize an ICT with Industry workshop. During five days a group of about 50 researchers from IT and Computer Science from a wide range of universities (within the Netherlands and Europe) will work together extensively on challenging problems proposed by companies. This year the KB has also provided a case: ARTificial Intelligence for Simplified Texts (ARTIST). During the ICT with Industry workshop we aim to explore the possibilities to make news articles, books and other publications more accessible to people with low literacy by applying AI techniques to automatically rewrite publications. This means they face challenges to fully participate in today’s society. Recently we have seen this problem when people with low-level literacy received invitations for the COVID- 19 vaccines that were too complicated for them. But also understanding the news by reading news articles in the newspaper or websites can be difficult making it hard to understand current issues. The KB, national library of the Netherlands, aims to make all publications available to all Dutch citizens, including people who have reading disabilities. In this use case we propose to explore the possibilities to make news articles, books and other publications more accessible to people with low literacy by applying AI techniques to automatically rewrite publications. In the Netherlands, several initiatives have been undertaken to manually make books or news articles more accessible. However, this is very labour intensive and only makes a small selection of publications available for illiterates. During the ICT with Industry workshop we aim to explore several methods to automatically rewrite news articles/book, making them available for all Dutch citizens.

Dear Colleagues, Now available online: a digital edition of Anne Frank's Diary and all her other manuscripts, at https://annefrankmanuscripten.org/. The present edition is in Dutch. A translation into English will follow in about a year's time. The edition was built using TEI-XML. Unfortunately, the edition is only accessible in countries where Anne Frank's texts are in the public domain. These include, to name a few, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Israel and Japan. The edition is not available in other countries, such as the UK, the USA and the Netherlands. The Institute for Natural Language Processing (IMS) at University of Stuttgart has an opening for a doctoral researcher (or a postdoc) in the context of project CAUTION [1] to work on the operationalization of concepts from the field of narratology and on tools for computer-aided analysis of a corpus of literary texts. CAUTION is a collaboration between literary studies and computational linguistics, headed by Janina Jacke (University of Göttingen) and Jonas Kuhn (University of Stuttgart) [2], which addresses the phenomenon of unreliable narration in fiction. The project aims to advance the representational means for capturing this phenomenon, to devise a framework for intersubjectively stable annotation in texts, and to develop computational tools for automatically detecting signals for unreliable narration in a corpus. The project is funded by DFG (the German Research Foundation) and is associated with the Priority Programme SPP 2207 Computational Literary Studies. The successful candidate will work (i) on the detection of text properties signaling unreliable narration using data-driven techniques from natural language processing (NLP) and (ii) on capturing systematically what reasoning leads a reader to consider the narrator of a story to be unreliable, using a symbolic knowledge representation & reasoning framework. Specifically, the project explores how the interaction between story-internal knowledge and background knowledge from various sources can be formalized in a belief-desire-intention model for intelligent agents and how such a formalization can be integrated with the practice of text annotation. An important element of the project will be a close exchange between theoretical research in literary studies and research on algorithmic modeling techniques. The candidate must have a Master's degree in computational linguistics, computer science, digital humanities, or similar. Familiarity with the data-driven modeling paradigm in current NLP research, programming skills and experience in running and evaluating corpus-based modeling experiments are a prerequisite. A reading knowledge of German is desirable, since we work on a corpus of German texts. Some background in digital humanities on the one hand, and in knowledge representation & reasoning, declarative programming (e.g. Prolog) and/or multi-agent systems on the other hand would be a plus. IMS Stuttgart offers an inspiring environment for interdisciplinary work on algorithmic text analysis in a range of research contexts; several groups work on digital humanities and computational social science projects. The position will be available for three years, starting in November 2021. The workshop continues a long tradition of annual meetings. The SIGHUM Workshops on Language Technology for Cultural Heritage, Social Sciences, and Humanities (LaTeCH) ran from 2007 to 2016. The ACL Workshops on Computational Linguistics for Literature (CLfL) took place from 2012 to 2016. The first four joint workshops (LaTeCH-CLfL) were held from 2017 to 2020. Topics and Content In the Humanities, Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage and literary communities, there is increasing interest in, and demand for, NLP methods for semantic and structural annotation, intelligent linking, discovery, querying, cleaning and visualization of both primary and secondary data. This is even true of primarily non-textual collections, given that text is also the pervasive medium for metadata. Such applications pose new challenges for NLP research: noisy, non-standard textual or multi-modal input, historical languages, vague research concepts, multilingual parts within one document, and so no. Digital resources often have insufficient coverage; resource-intensive methods require (semi-)automatic processing tools and domain adaptation, or intense manual effort (e.g., annotation). Literary texts bring their own problems, because navigating this form of creative expression requires more than the typical information-seeking tools. Examples of advanced tasks include the study of literature of a certain period, author or sub-genre, recognition of certain literary devices, or quantitative analysis of poetry. NLP methods applied in this context not only need to achieve high performance, but are often applied as a first step in research or scholarly workflow. That is why it is crucial to interpret model results properly; model interpretability might be more important than raw performance scores, depending on the context. More generally, there is a growing interest in computational models whose results can be used or interpreted in meaningful ways. It is, therefore, of mutual benefit that NLP experts, data specialists and Digital Humanities researchers who work in and across their domains get involved in the Computational Linguistics community and present their fundamental or applied research results. It has already been demonstrated how cross-disciplinary exchange not only supports work in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Cultural Heritage communities but also promotes work in the Computational Linguistics community to build richer and more effective tools and models. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: • adaptation of NLP tools to Cultural Heritage, Social Sciences, Humanities and literature; • automatic error detection and cleaning of textual data; • complex annotation schemas, tools and interfaces; • creation (fully- or semi-automatic) of semantic resources; • creation and analysis of social networks of literary characters; • discourse and narrative analysis/modelling, notably in literature; • emotion analysis for the humanities and for literature; • generation of literary narrative, dialogue or poetry; • identification and analysis of literary genres; • linking and retrieving information from different sources, media, and domains; • modelling dialogue literary style for generation; • modelling of information and knowledge in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Cultural Heritage; • profiling and authorship attribution; • search for scientific and/or scholarly literature; • work with linguistic variation and non-standard or historical use of language. Information for Authors We invite papers on original, unpublished work in the topic areas of the workshop. In addition to long papers, we will consider short papers and system descriptions (demos). We also welcome position papers. • Long papers, presenting completed work, may consist of up to eight (8) pages of content plus additional pages of references; final camera-ready versions of accepted long papers will be given one additional page of content (up to 9 pages) so that reviewers’ comments can be taken into account. • A short paper / demo can present work in progress, or the description of a system, and may consist of up to four (4) pages of content plus additional pages of references. Upon acceptance, short papers will be given five (5) content pages in the proceedings. • A position paper — clearly marked as such — should not exceed six (6) pages including references. All submissions are to use the EMNLP stylesheets (for LaTeX / Overleaf and MS Word), to be announced soon at https://2021.emnlp.org/call-for-papers/.
