Dear all, I'm looking to hire a post-doctoral researcher in digital humanities for my upcoming ERC-funded project: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/a-foundation-for-em… The project develops novel methods and resources for studying multimodality, or how human communication naturally combines multiple 'modes' of expression. These methods and resources are used to develop empirically founded theories of multimodal communication in the domain of everyday cultural artefacts. The data studied in the project includes, for example, school textbooks, user-generated explanation videos on social media, news broadcasts, instruction manuals and online newspapers. This is a fixed-term position for 36 months, starting in September 2024 or as agreed, based in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher is responsible for developing structured, machine-readable representations of multimodality for the page-based and audiovisual media studied in the project. As the descriptions of multimodality are collected using crowdsourcing, the post-doctoral researcher is also expected to participate in designing and implementing crowdsourcing pipelines. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in digital humanities, humanities computing, computer science or a related field, and have a keen interest in multimodality. Previous experience of developing structured representations for diverse forms of data is essential. Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC) is a key academic conference for research results and new developments in the area of the Semantic Web and Knowledge Graphs. ESU DH C&T is hosted by Babeș-Bolyai University Romania from 15 July to 26 July 2024. Call for Papers: Epidemic Remedies In Medical Writing - 18th - 19th June 2024

Please note, there is no fee for registration. *Epidemic Remedies In Medical Writing - 18th - 19th June 2024 - University of Ferrara* This conference aims to discuss the representation of epidemic remedies in medical writing in England and in France between 1500 and 1920. Prospective presenters are invited to address epidemic remedies across five centuries, bearing three main methodological observations in mind. Firstly, the pivotal role of the plague and the Spanish influenza as opening and closing points to the selected timeframe. Secondly, the working definition of “remedy” as a cure “for a disease, disorder, injury, etc.; a medicine or treatment that promotes healing or alleviates symptoms.” (OED, remedy 2). This comprehensive definition intends to allow for historical specification and diachronic terminological variation, which the prospective presenters are invited to explore and specify. Thirdly, the definition of representation as “the process by which members of a culture use language (broadly defined as any system which deploys signs, any signifying system) to produce meaning” (Hall 1997: 61), with particular emphasis on language use at lexical and discourse level, as well as the interaction between semiotic systems (e.g. word and image). The present aim is not only to offer a diachronic perspective on the linguistic and visual representation of remedies, but also to focus on remedies prescribed during epidemics, with a view to better understanding the history of medical and health communication. Potential research questions straddle multiple standpoints - historical linguistics, the analysis of discourse, the analysis of lexis, as well as images - and multiple text types (medical treatises, medical dictionaries, periodical publications, medical advertisements through time). They include but are not limited to: - The lexical description of remedies in medical writing - The metaphorical description of remedies in medical writing - The rhetorical construction of ethos in medical writing dealing with epidemic remedies - The visual representation of remedies in medical writing - The visual representation of remedies in newspapers/magazines - The linguistic-visual construal of remedies in texts containing multiple semiotic systems (i.e. advertisements) - the insurgence of misinformation and disinformation in/about health communication (these categories may be epistemologically relevant in papers dealing with the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries) We invite proposals from a wide range of methodological perspectives. To name but a few: corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, multimodal discourse analysis, historical lexicography and terminology, new historicism, cultural theory, epistemology, philosophy of science, gender medicine, and gender theory. Best regards, Anne-Sophie, Nils, Petr, Pablo *PLOTTING POETRY 7: Metres of Humour.* 26-27-28 June, 2024 Einsiedeln, Switzerland *Call for Papers* *Plotting Poetry* is a conference series focussed on computational, statistical and other quantitative approaches for the study of poetic texts, and of poeticity more broadly. This quantitative focus, this insistence on the formalization and operationalisation of texts, from simple pen and paper counting and compiling to complex algorithms, provides us with a number of paths to analyze, describe, interpret, attribute, classify, track and generally access the texts. The Plotting Poetry conferences bring together a friendly community of researchers, and articles rooted in the conference papers have given rise to several peer-reviewed collective volumes. The name of the group stems from an effort to translate a (perfectly serious) pun by the French modernist poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who in 1917 wrote that poets should “[machiner] poetry as has been done for the world”, where the verb *machiner* is visibly used for* mechanize*, although it really means *to plot*, as one would *plot* a coup. In this group, we are plotting against our own limitations by trying to plot literature on graphs, devising mechanized approaches to dissect the mechanics of poetry. This year’s conference welcomes a focus on the many forms of humour in verse. Although verse and humour might appear to sit at opposite ends of a literary hierarchy of taste and sophistication, the two have appeared together for as long as verse has been written, sung, played, shared or shouted. Versified humour can be found in popular productions and in highbrow literature, with poets writing lighter pieces alongside their other productions, as well as including humorous passages within their serious works. Both materials - humour and verse - rely on a departure from *bona fide* communication, seeking to harness the shortcomings of language, to create layered meanings and to trigger an additional effort from the recipient trying to make sense of incongruous or opaque utterances. Whilst ambiguity would be an enemy of efficient communication, it is a staple of both humour and poetry. Versification usually provides us with a reassuring sameness, and versified humour sometimes relies on this learned expectation of sameness, taking advantage of our prior knowledge in order to mislead us. This happens when an unexpected approximate rhyme brings to mind the obscene word that would provide a similar yet perfect rhyme. Or when the choice of a specific metre, with its baggage of associated uses and meanings, helps create parody or satire. Or even, very simply, when the stanzaic structure of a poem builds then breaks the monotony of lines, signaling the humorous intent of its punchline. In French, the punchline of a joke and the striking end of a poem are both named *la chute*: the fall. Verse has an ability to leave an impression on our minds and memories, and as such can readily serve persuasion efforts, from slogans or commercials to epic poems and state propaganda. Humour is often a deeply political reality. Despite its affinity with taboo subjects and irreverence, one of humour’s regular uses is to spread and maintain stereotypes, assert domination, and strengthen the feelings of belonging and allegiance through a so-called universality. This humour of the dominant tends to suppress minority voices and singular perspectives, requiring the dominated to laugh along in an effort to fit with the in-group. And yet, it can also be used as a weapon for attacking the order in place, voicing singularities, and questioning the established norms. Examining the powers of those two phenomena, one can wonder: What happens when a versified text is humorous, and what when a humorous text is in verse? Can shared regularities be found in the many verse forms of humorous texts? Can we measure those, and how? Should, or can, the funniness of it be taken into account, or even just its humorous intent, despite the high degree of cultural, linguistic and historical specificity? Papers addressing humour alongside verse or other highly-controlled and rhythmical forms are all welcome, whether written, read, sung or smuggled, from the lowest to the highest registers, from any time period and any language area. This focus on humour in verse is not an exclusive one, and we encourage the submission of papers that use quantitative tools and methods in investigating poetry or poeticity, regardless of their link to humorous poetry. Besides, as has been traditional at Plotting Poetry conferences, works on other genres may also be included, provided that a mechanization or quantification apparatus is being used to explore their poeticity. Some of the topics to consider include but are not limited to: - Verse forms and meters used and misused for lighter pieces - Stanzaic structures and their use in humour - Puns and their relationship to versification - Versification as a target of humour - Slogans and propaganda - Standup as poetry - Musical forms of humour (song, rap…) - … For this 7th Plotting Poetry conference, we will be convening in the Swiss village of Einsiedeln, in the canton of Schwyz. Critical Perspectives and Intersections in the Digital Humanities. The interdisciplinary symposium aims to further explore the concepts of “lack of cultural criticism” (Fiormonte 2012) and “situated knowledge” (Haraway 1988), which have been conjugated in their multiple facets in the field of DH. In particular, it will focus on the active and embodied role of the researcher, on the opportunities created by the application of Information Technology to the Humanities, and on the challenges presented by the use of technological tools, that are usually considered neutral, but which deeply influence the epistemologies and practices of the Humanities themselves. We encourage perspectives drawn from qualitative and quantitative historical and philological analysis, cultural criticism, and sociological, literary, artistic and linguistic disciplines, supported by digital and computational approaches. Attention will be paid to the linguistic, geographical and cultural hegemonies of DH, to the major issues of communication and the so-called “informatics of domination”, to the bias introduced by the extended use of Large Language Models, and to the complexity of interactions between Artificial Intelligence and artistic and cultural heritages and practices. The workshop focusing on the integration of data semantics, ontologies, moral values, and their societal impact About the Workshop: The growing influence of AI in our daily lives has transformed both the digital landscape and the way we generate, extract and represent information. The surge in using Large Language Models (LLMs) not only in academia and industry but among the public, has made it increasingly important to address the alignment of AI tools to moral and cultural human values. Despite ongoing governmental work on developing ethical guidelines and practical requirements for AI, for academic and industrial applications there is a particular importance to ensure that the research respective practical methods follow ethical practices and that the outcomes do not conflict with moral values. As hybridizing knowledge structures and semantic data with generative AI has a high impact potential for the development of increasingly more complex and intelligent systems, it becomes of the utmost important that such innovation adheres to the EU’s objective of realizing AI applications that are dependable, robust, explicable, ethically guided, and therefore trustworthy. Kind regards, Simone === LCS Digital Humanities Symposium. ‘Consuming fiction in a convergence culture’ School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of Leeds 5 June 2024 Call for papers This symposium is open to all scholars of languages, literature, film, media, game and narrative studies who are using digital methods in their research (or are studying digital media) and are interested in the themes of reception, reader and audience response, and cultural consumption more broadly. *Theme*: *C**onsuming fiction in a convergence culture* *When: 5 June 2024, University of Leeds* With this one-day Symposium we invite an interdisciplinary discussion on the reception and consumption of narrative fiction across different media and artforms. The event is open to all scholars of languages, literature, film, media, game and narrative studies who are using the frame of digital humanities and want to share their works and exchange ideas. At the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies of the University of Leeds we have been working on a project entitled ‘Audience engagement with Elena Ferrante’s storyworld. Consuming fiction in a convergence culture’. Using digital humanities methods, we are collecting and analysing social media data and metadata in order to investigate how ordinary readers and TV audiences respond to and engage with the storyworld created by Italian writer Elena Ferrante. By hosting the Symposium at Leeds, we hope to take stock of what is happening in the field, exchange ideas and methodologies arising from our individual case studies and promote discussions, networks and even collaboration among scholars who, in different disciplines, are working on cultural consumption and digital humanities. The day will involve keynote talks, research project presentations (10-15 minutes), and a round-table discussion. Link to the Zoom-Meeting: https://uni-bielefeld.zoom-x.de/j/67554437983?pwd=VHNOUzNWMEZYeUkxUDJkZ015T… Meeting-ID: 675 5443 7983 Passwort: 135077 Abstract: Different discourse types present their own special challenges across the spectrum of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, for example, models that are trained or tuned for specific discourse types (e.g., wall street journal articles), to techniques that make certain assumptions about the texts in question (e.g., that everything described takes places “in the real world”). The narrative discourse type presents numerous interesting challenges for existing techniques, and also suggests novel NLP tasks specifically relevant to narrative. I present a selection of recent progress in the FIU Cognition, Narrative, and Culture (Cognac) Laboratory on NLP as applied to narrative. First, a new approach to timeline extraction that significantly improve our ability to extract, organize, and characterize timelines of events. Second, significantly improved animacy and character detection, where the goal is to determine whether a referent is animate and is acting as a “character”. We see that this approach requires some narratological sophistication to be successful. Third, new improvements in sub-event and event relationship detection on narrative texts that take advantage of certain important features of narrative discourse. Fourth, inference from text of narrative structures that were described by Vladimir Propp. I illustrate various applications of this work, focusing in particular on efforts to detect and model disinformation in the online space. Bio: Dr. Mark A. Finlayson is Eminent Scholar Chaired Associate Professor of Computer Science in the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences (KFSCIS) at Florida International University (FIU). His research intersects artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and cognitive science. He directs the FIU SCIS Cognition, Narrative, and Culture (Cognac) Laboratory whose members focus on advancing the science of narrative, including: understanding the relationship between cognition, narrative, and culture; developing new methods and techniques for investigating questions related to language and narrative; and endowing machines with the ability to understand and use narratives for a variety of applications. He received his Ph.D. from MIT in computer science in 2012 under the supervision of Patrick H. Winston. He also holds the M.S. in Electrical Engineering from MIT (2001) and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1998). Dr. Finlayson served as a research scientist at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory for 2½ years before coming to FIU, and served as the KSCIS Interim Associate Director between Fall 2020 and Spring 2022. Dr. Finlayson is a recipient of an NSF CAREER Award (2018), an IBM Faculty Award (2019), and a DARPA Young Faculty Award (2021). He has also served as the Edison Fellow for AI at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from 2019 until the present. Dr. Finlayson received FIU’s university-wide Faculty Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activities (2019), a university-wide Top Scholar Award for Teaching and Mentoring (2018), and departmental awards for Excellence in Service (2016), Teaching (2018), Fundamental Research (2019), and Mentoring (2021). Dear all, I'm looking to hire a post-doctoral researcher in human computation and/or knowledge representation for my upcoming ERC-funded project that starts in May 2024: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/a-foundation-for-em… This position is for a fixed term of 36 months and based at the newly founded Multimodality Research Group in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/ PROJECT: The project develops novel methods for studying the phenomenon of multimodality, that is, how communication and interaction rely on intentional combinations of multiple 'modes' of expression. The project will use crowdsourcing for gathering human insights at scale, which are then processed and searched for patterns using neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence, such as graph neural networks. The methods and resources developed in the project will enable developing empirically founded theories about multimodal communication in the domain of everyday cultural artefacts. The data studied in the project includes, for example, school textbooks, user-generated explanation videos on social media, news broadcasts, instruction manuals and online newspapers. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher will be responsible for developing graph-based representations of multimodal discourse, that is, how different modes of expression – such as written and spoken language, photographs, diagrams, embodied communication, etc. – are combined in page-based and audiovisual media studied in the project. Insights about multimodal discourse are collected at scale using crowdsourcing and compiled into graph-based representations, which is why the appointee is also expected to participate in designing crowdsourcing pipelines and computational methods for quality control and knowledge representation. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in computer science, digital humanities or a related field. A deep understanding of modern approaches to knowledge representation (especially knowledge graphs) and/or human computation (crowdsourcing or citizen science) is considered essential for the planned research. A successful candidate should also have a solid understanding of programming languages such as Python and libraries used for processing and managing data (e.g. pandas, PyTorch, NetworkX). Experience in collaborative development of research software is considered an advantage. Applications are now open for the third of the CLS INFRA academic Training School events, “ExploreCor: Using Programmable Corpora in Computational Literary Studies. It is set to take place in Vienna June 10-12 2024, spanning three intensive days. This program covers some of the most important steps in the research cycle of Computational Literary Studies, focusing on "Programmable Corpora" – dynamic collections of literary texts manipulated programmatically. Participants will delve into finding, evaluating, and selecting corpora using tools like the CLSCor metadata catalogue and DraCor. The curriculum features: * learning how to use Python and Jupyter Notebooks for analysis, * querying and retrieving data via APIs, * working with Linked Open Data, * learning how to conduct Digital Literary Network Analysis, * an introduction to Docker for research encapsulation (addressing the Reproducibility Crisis) Attendees gain practical skills to conduct transparent and replicable research, contributing to the advancement of Computational Literary Studies. The Third Workshop on Language Technologies for Historical and Ancient LAnguages (LT4HALA 2024) will be held on May 25th in Torino (Italy), co-located with LREC-COLING 2024. This one-day workshop wants to bring together scholars, who are developing and/or are using Language Technologies (LTs) for historically attested languages, so to foster cross-fertilization between the Computational Linguistics community and the areas in the Humanities dealing with historical linguistic data, e.g. historians, philologists, linguists, archaeologists and literary scholars. In the context of the research project PRIN 2022 Reading the Italian Novel at a Distance (1830-1930) the selection is open for a Research Fellowship position (one year, possibly renewable) at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. The project aims to conduct distant reading experiments on a corpus of 1000 Italian novels and short story collections, including translations into Italian from other languages, published between 1830 and 1930. Large-scale analyses will be conducted from a synchronic and diachronic perspective using statistical and computational methods. Analyses will focus on the way characters express their thoughts and emotions and on the identification of social changes in the novels under investigation. All best wishes, —---- CALL FOR PAPERS —---- Historical Arguments and the Digital University of Luxembourg, 25th-27th June 2024 In 2016, Franco Morretti argued that “somehow digital humanities has managed to secure for itself this endless infancy, in which it is always a future promise.”1 In the years since, little has changed. Whilst there has been exponential growth in the number of resources, tools, and methodological discussions in the digital humanities, there remains limited contribution towards traditional historical narratives implementing these, increasing the apparent gap between DH and traditional history. Terminology in the digital humanities – networks, mapping, modelling – has long been used metaphorically to explore historical phenomenon; yet in digitalizing these ideas, we have gradually moved away from the analytical arguments these phrases were originally used for. The more digital methodologies are separated from traditional approaches – focusing on building without analysing and represented only on ‘digital humanities’ panels in historical conferences – the greater the risk is of becoming increasingly insular and closed-off, “an interdisciplinary silo in which we are only speaking to other displaced scholars.”2 As a result, the digital humanities are often still faced with the ‘so-what’ question: what impact can these new methods and approaches make on historical arguments and how can they advance scholarship? This conference seeks to address the ‘so-what’, promoting conversation as to how new research processes and methodologies might build into and contribute to traditional narratives. Though the building of digital resources and tools are in themselves important analytical and interpretative acts – and are slowly beginning to be recognised as such within the wider humanities – they are also vital building blocks for historical arguments that can exist as exemplars of both digital and traditional scholarship. This conference offers a space to consider how this gap might be closed once more, encouraging historical case studies reflecting on the ways in which digital methodologies have offered a means of exploring historical sources and expanding historical narratives and fostering digital history research questions that push beyond merely the descriptive to the interpretative and analytical. We invite abstracts of 300-500 words for 20-minute papers that demonstrate the argumentative practices of Digital History and the broader historical profession. These may employ any form of methodology or tool under the umbrella of ‘digital history’ examining any historical period across the globe, but must present findings and arguments engaging with and contributing to historical narratives. Papers will be arranged chronologically or by historical theme rather than methodological approach, reframing the focus on the historical contribution once more. Submissions from PhDs and ECRs are very welcome, as are ‘works in progress’, so long as they remain indicative of an historical argument, and are not project proposals or overviews.
