Dear European Digital Humanists, we extended the deadline for proposal submissions for the international conference *"European Cultural Memory in its Digitalization - Inventing Cultural Memory in the 21st Century?"* to *19.5.2024* The concept of cultural heritage has been in circulation for decades (e.g. UNESCO convention 1972) if not centuries (e.g. discussion on repatriation of artworks at the Congress of Vienna, 1815), in scientific, cultural and policy contexts. The extensive digitization of collections in archives, museums, and libraries, as well as the digital dissemination and mediation of cultural artefacts has also been framed as supporting the process of Europeanization. For instance, the mission of Europeana documents this interest in creating a European cultural identity (Capurro 2023). The very idea of a European heritage is embedded with the vision and policies of the European Union, fostering a shared European identity and memory on the grounds of a common culture and history as well as the rejection of the violent experiences of the 20th century (Radonic 2023). The conference “European Cultural Memory in its Digitalization” focuses on the intersection of cultural heritage, digital transformation and Europeanisation processes, also responding to the recent dynamic trends in Artificial Intelligence. It aims to question and problematize dimensions of cultural heritage from the European past in the context of contemporary social, cultural and technological transformations. It thus takes into account both the transformative (technological) and representational (discursive) potentials of digitalization of cultural heritage. This conference will discuss the European and national cultural and research policy strategies in the context of cultural heritage and its digital transformation in general and through the lens of specific projects engaging in this process. Furthermore, recent collaborations between digital humanities and cultural heritage organizations and researchers will be discussed. By contextualizing heritage in the European digital society agenda, general digital transformation processes, datafication and artificial intelligence developments, we will drive forward current debates in Digital Humanities and Memory Studies. The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers and scholars from various disciplines and reflect on the state of research in the field, opening up fresh discussions and dialogue. We invite you to submit contributions, in particular on the following themes: * National/transnational/European policies, identities and the digital cultural heritage field * (strategies, funding, trends, transformations, etc.); Promises and expectations of digitalization, datafication and artificial intelligence in the context of the cultural heritage of Europe and the Europeanization processes; * Research and reflections about relevant actors, institutions, networks and actants in these processes (GLAMs, universities, NGOs, independent initiatives, commons, etc.); * Different types of digital cultural heritage (including archaeological, architectural, intangible cultural heritage, moveable cultural relics and museums, ancient books and archives, internet and new media digital artistic and creative content) and their material, infrastructural and discursive dimensions. * Transformation of cultural memory in the age of digitalization. We also encourage contributions that explore other related topics, including social, historical, cultural, technological, political, educational, ecological, communicational, organizational, critical, academic and other dimensions at the intersection of European memory studies and digital cultural heritage research. Dear colleagues, The Digital Humanities Research Hub at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, invites submissions for the inaugural Born-Digital Collections, Archives and Memory conference, to be hosted at the University of London and online from 2-4 April 2025 in collaboration with colleagues from Aarhus University, the British Library, and the Endangered Material Knowledge Programme at the British Museum. The deadline for submissions for the Born-Digital Collections, Archives and Memory Conference has been extended to Friday, 7 June 2024. We are also delighted to announce our first Keynote Speaker, Dorothy Berry, Digital Curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, where her focus is on enhancing public access to digital cultural heritage materials and creating new virtual environments for exploring Black history. Her work explores the intersections of information discovery and African American history, spanning from researching early mentions of African American concert music performances in newspaper databases to curating exhibits showcasing transatlantic art inspired by African American film. Dear Colleagues, Malach Center for Visual History is celebrating fifteen years since its opening, and it will commemorate this anniversary with a second edition of the Prague Visual History and Digital Humanities Conference (PRAVIDCO 2025) . The conference's aims reflect the activities of the Malach Center, serving as a nexus for those primarily engaged in the technological aspects of the humanities and social sciences perspectives of contemporary interdisciplinary research. Dear all, We are happy to announce that the DH2024 pre-conference workshop “Computational Literary Studies: How To Do Research Responsibly” (co-organized by SIG-DLS and CLS-INFRA) will take place on Monday August 5th, 9:00am - 4:30pm. It will include two keynote talks by Amy Earnhart (on datasets collected responsibly) and Artjoms Šeļa (on statistical analysis conducted responsibly; the actual titles of the two keynote talks to be announced later) and a demo session on extracting information from large-scale collections of texts representing specific genres, e.g. ELTeC (prose) and DraCor (drama). The program will be concluded by a session of Lightning Talks in the afternoon. A light lunch (with vegetarian/vegan options available) will be offered by the organizers. You are all invited to join! Also, if you have an idea that falls under the topic of “Computational Literary Studies” and would like to discuss it with a pool of experts in the field, do not hesitate to send your proposal for a lightning talk! Dear DH-colleagues, (apologies for cross-posting) we (DH Potsdam) invite you to our next online 'Code & culture' lecture titled 'The cultural code of gender: from binary classes to a complex phenomenon of literary characterisation', by Prof. Dr. Mareike Schumacher (currently assistant professor for Digital Humanities at the University of Stuttgart). Here is the abstract for the talk: Can the two classes "male" and "female" – often understood as a binary either-or distinction – actually be modeled as basic units ("primitives") that can be arranged into complex codes designating all facets of gender in its multiplicity? In this talk, an analogy between the technical binary code and the cultural code of gender is used to test the hypothesis that gender can be seen as a discrete phenomenon constructed through varying combinations of male and female features. Additionally, it is brought into question whether "neutral" should be seen as a third basic unit and whether there might be more “gender primitives”. The presentation also includes a case study from Computational Literary Studies, in which several corpora consisting of literary texts in the German language are analyzed. In the study, gender roles such as ‘father’, ‘young girl’, or ‘person’ are classified according to basic gender units. The appointee will also participate in developing new methods for analysing large multimodal corpora. The appointee must have a deep understanding of contemporary theories of multimodality relevant to the domain of the project. Dear EADH list members, Please find below a Call for Papers for the second Web/Comics workshop, co-located with the Hypertext 2024 conference. ***Submission deadline 15 June 2024 **** Web/Comics 2024: Creativity in Small Spaces is the second in a new workshop series for the ACM Hypertext conference https://ht.acm.org/ht2024/. Web/Comics 2024 wants to investigate whether webcomics exemplify the expansion of hypertext beyond the linearity of information processing systems into a type of interactivity that is nonlinear (multicursal) and ludic. It uses webcomics to explore the boundaries of hypertext, for example by assessing its utility to the reader or user and its effects on “readers’ ongoing process of establishing meaning and coherence. At the same time, it asks how profoundly new tools such as text-to-image models and other forms of generative AI are altering comics production and consumption. The workshop will be held in conjunction with the Hypertext 2024 conference, 10-13 September, at the University of Poznań, Poland. The workshop will take place in a hybrid modality. While in-person attendance is preferred, we will allow remote presentations to maximize inclusivity. Umanistica Digitale goes rolling!

Dear colleagues I am pleased to announce that Umanistica Digitale (UD, https://umanisticadigitale.unibo.it/) the scientific journal of the AIUCD (http:www.asiucd.org), will become a rolling publication journal while maintaining its six-monthly periodicity. Accordingly, articles submitted by authors to the journal will be sent for processing immediately and published immediately after the end of the evaluation phase. Every six months, the issue will be closed in July and December, and the book reviews/project reports (that will not benefit from immediate publication for technical reasons) will be added. This model has the advantage of making the publication of scientific papers submitted to UD much faster and of streamlining the editorial workload for both the evaluation and the editorial part while keeping the formality required by many academic evaluation and funding agencies. We are convinced that in the domain of Digital Humanities, the timeliness with which a research product is made public and enters the scientific debate of the community is of utmost importance. In the near future, the editorial staff will assess the feasibility of further innovations such as open peer review. Let me remind you that UD publishes articles in Italian and English, is indexed on Scopus (https://www.scopus.com/sourceid/21101060465 Citescore 2023: 0.8) and is an A-level journal in many disciplinary areas for the Italian evaluation Agency ANVUR (mandatory for obtaining Italian professorship habilitation). Hi all, The Digital Humanities Research Hub at the University of London is pleased to announce a pair of short courses we will be running, focused on using 3D modelling and 3D printing technologies for historical research & cultural heritage. Both courses cover the same material, with one being offered fully online and the other offered in-person. 3D Modelling & 3D Printing for Historical Research Cost: £50 standard / £25 unwaged or unfunded Tutors: Gabriel Bodard & Michael Donnay (University of London) Do you want to learn how to build digital reconstructions of historical buildings, monuments or archeological sites? Are you interested in how 3D printing can be useful for cultural heritage? In this short workshop, we will introduce you to Sketchup, an easy-to-use tool for building architectural or other models. Through a mix of online videos to watch in advance and synchronous time with the instructors, we will practise reconstructing a ruined building from Pompeii, following the archaeological reports, dimensions and drawings. We will also discuss the connection between 3D modelling and printing, and walk through the steps to 3D print a model from Sketchup. Exploring Digital Collections and Situated Knowledges in Film History and Beyond Closing Conference of the BMBF Research Group DAVIF Philipps-Universität Marburg November 14-16, 2024 In recent years, the application of digital tools and methods is on a rise within the field of film and media studies, often relying on data provided by film heritage and other GLAM institutions. At the same time, these institutions seek ways to make their collections more accessible for researchers. In this process, ethical considerations regarding data provenance, archival silences and situated knowledges woven into cultural heritage data take on a new urgency. While digital humanists have increasingly investigated power structures inscribed in cultural heritage data, the political, theoretical, and technological underpinnings of film historical collections need further explorations. For example, how do categorization processes underlying information technologies affect our understanding of film history? What impact do they have on different social groups and especially on marginalized communities? How should we deal with the inclusion of certain data and the exclusion of others? How can we identify and represent gaps and blind spots in cultural heritage collections when reflecting history? Bringing together researchers, scholars and practitioners, the conference seeks to stimulate a critical debate about the creation, processing and archiving of film historical data and other cultural heritage data. The goal of the conference is to examine how critical perspectives on historical research data can be combined with new ways of applying and exploring digital tools and methods in film and media studies and beyond. Based on DAVIF’s research on data visualizations and women in film history, the conference focuses on the intersections of feminist (film) historiography, critical data studies, data feminism, archival and curatorial practices, computational approaches, AI applications, and information infrastructures. We invite film and media scholars, film historians, film archivists and digital humanists from various fields to reflect on and challenge power structures of data collections and practices. In particular, we welcome feminist perspectives that seek not only to tell different stories, but also to tell them differently. Participants are encouraged to consider a wide range of subjects for their proposals. These may include but are not limited to: * Datafication of film and media studies and beyond * Feminist film historiography including speculative approaches * Archival silences, biases and gaps in cultural heritage collections * Power-critical analysis of the creation, processing and archiving of film historical data and other cultural heritage data * Data provenance in film heritage institutions and other GLAM institutions * Critical, feminist, queer, postcolonial approaches to data visualizations * Analysis of information infrastructures and authority data (e.g. Wikidata, GND, LoC, VIAF) *Submissions* We welcome two types of proposals: 1) papers and 2) workshops. Dear DH colleagues, we (the Digital Humanities Network at the University of Potsdam) invite you to the online open lecture titled 'The Driving Forces of Literary Evolution: Tracing the Causes of Cultural Change with the Price Equation', by Oleg Sobchuk (researcher at the Department of Human Behavior, Ecology and Culture, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology; author of the upcoming chapter on Evolution of Modern Literature and Film in the Oxford Handbook of Cultural Evolution). This lecture is the inaugural event of the 'Code & Culture' series of open talks <https://www.uni-potsdam.de/de/digital-humanities/aktivitaeten/code-and-cult…> at the DH Network Potsdam. Annotation: Does literature progress “one funeral at a time”, as Max Planck famously claimed about science? Is the change mainly driven by the turnover of “generations”, or cohorts? Who contributes more to change in literature and arts – “old masters” or “young geniuses”? And how can we separate the different causes of cultural change? A trendline spanning a period of time is one of the most common graphs in the computational humanities. Often, such a trendline is explained with a single causal mechanism: a cause C is driving a trait T over a period P. For example, the proportion of negative words (T1) during the 20th century (P1) in literature is increasing due to “negativity bias” (C1). Or, the proportion of abstract words (T2) in the 19th century (P2) is growing due to urbanisation (C2). On the surface, this approach may look sufficient but, under the surface, there are rocks: not only there could be multiple causes, but also different parts of the trendline may be driven by different causes. In computational humanities, there is no effective method for “dissecting the trendline” and uncovering these hidden causal mechanisms. The scholars of evolution, however, do have such a method: a simple and elegant – and famous – equation that was suggested by the mathematician George R. Price over 50 years ago, known as “the Price equation”. It allowed biologists to uncover the potential driving forces behind evolutionary change. The forces behind literary – and, more broadly, cultural – change are still little known – and much debated. The Price equation can give us some answers. This research is characterized by the use of formal methods and the construction of explicit, computational models. This includes quantitative, statistical approaches, but also more generally computational methods for processing and analyzing data, as well as theoretical reflections on these approaches. Despite the undeniable growth of this research area, many scholars still struggle to find suitable research-oriented venues to present and publish computational work that does not lose sight of traditional modes of inquiry in the arts and humanities. This is the scholarly niche that the CHR conference aims to fill. More precisely, the conference aims at 1. Building a community of scholars working on humanities research questions relying on a wide range of computational and quantitative approaches to humanities data in all its forms. We consider this community to be complementary to the digital humanities landscape. 2. Promoting good practices through sharing “research stories”. Dear all, I'm looking to hire a post-doctoral researcher in digital humanities for my upcoming ERC-funded project: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/a-foundation-for-em… The project develops novel methods and resources for studying multimodality, or how human communication naturally combines multiple 'modes' of expression. These methods and resources are used to develop empirically founded theories of multimodal communication in the domain of everyday cultural artefacts. The data studied in the project includes, for example, school textbooks, user-generated explanation videos on social media, news broadcasts, instruction manuals and online newspapers. This is a fixed-term position for 36 months, starting in September 2024 or as agreed, based in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher is responsible for developing structured, machine-readable representations of multimodality for the page-based and audiovisual media studied in the project. As the descriptions of multimodality are collected using crowdsourcing, the post-doctoral researcher is also expected to participate in designing and implementing crowdsourcing pipelines. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in digital humanities, humanities computing, computer science or a related field, and have a keen interest in multimodality. Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC) is a key academic conference for research results and new developments in the area of the Semantic Web and Knowledge Graphs. ESU DH C&T is hosted by Babeș-Bolyai University Romania from 15 July to 26 July 2024. Call for Papers: Epidemic Remedies In Medical Writing - 18th - 19th June 2024

Please note, there is no fee for registration. *Epidemic Remedies In Medical Writing - 18th - 19th June 2024 - University of Ferrara* This conference aims to discuss the representation of epidemic remedies in medical writing in England and in France between 1500 and 1920. Prospective presenters are invited to address epidemic remedies across five centuries, bearing three main methodological observations in mind. Firstly, the pivotal role of the plague and the Spanish influenza as opening and closing points to the selected timeframe. Secondly, the working definition of “remedy” as a cure “for a disease, disorder, injury, etc.; a medicine or treatment that promotes healing or alleviates symptoms.” (OED, remedy 2). This comprehensive definition intends to allow for historical specification and diachronic terminological variation, which the prospective presenters are invited to explore and specify. Thirdly, the definition of representation as “the process by which members of a culture use language (broadly defined as any system which deploys signs, any signifying system) to produce meaning” (Hall 1997: 61), with particular emphasis on language use at lexical and discourse level, as well as the interaction between semiotic systems (e.g. word and image). The present aim is not only to offer a diachronic perspective on the linguistic and visual representation of remedies, but also to focus on remedies prescribed during epidemics, with a view to better understanding the history of medical and health communication. Potential research questions straddle multiple standpoints - historical linguistics, the analysis of discourse, the analysis of lexis, as well as images - and multiple text types (medical treatises, medical dictionaries, periodical publications, medical advertisements through time). They include but are not limited to: - The lexical description of remedies in medical writing - The metaphorical description of remedies in medical writing - The rhetorical construction of ethos in medical writing dealing with epidemic remedies - The visual representation of remedies in medical writing - The visual representation of remedies in newspapers/magazines - The linguistic-visual construal of remedies in texts containing multiple semiotic systems (i.e. advertisements) - the insurgence of misinformation and disinformation in/about health communication (these categories may be epistemologically relevant in papers dealing with the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries) We invite proposals from a wide range of methodological perspectives. To name but a few: corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, multimodal discourse analysis, historical lexicography and terminology, new historicism, cultural theory, epistemology, philosophy of science, gender medicine, and gender theory. Best regards, Anne-Sophie, Nils, Petr, Pablo *PLOTTING POETRY 7: Metres of Humour.* 26-27-28 June, 2024 Einsiedeln, Switzerland *Call for Papers* *Plotting Poetry* is a conference series focussed on computational, statistical and other quantitative approaches for the study of poetic texts, and of poeticity more broadly. This quantitative focus, this insistence on the formalization and operationalisation of texts, from simple pen and paper counting and compiling to complex algorithms, provides us with a number of paths to analyze, describe, interpret, attribute, classify, track and generally access the texts. The Plotting Poetry conferences bring together a friendly community of researchers, and articles rooted in the conference papers have given rise to several peer-reviewed collective volumes. The name of the group stems from an effort to translate a (perfectly serious) pun by the French modernist poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who in 1917 wrote that poets should “[machiner] poetry as has been done for the world”, where the verb *machiner* is visibly used for* mechanize*, although it really means *to plot*, as one would *plot* a coup. In this group, we are plotting against our own limitations by trying to plot literature on graphs, devising mechanized approaches to dissect the mechanics of poetry. This year’s conference welcomes a focus on the many forms of humour in verse. Although verse and humour might appear to sit at opposite ends of a literary hierarchy of taste and sophistication, the two have appeared together for as long as verse has been written, sung, played, shared or shouted. Versified humour can be found in popular productions and in highbrow literature, with poets writing lighter pieces alongside their other productions, as well as including humorous passages within their serious works. Both materials - humour and verse - rely on a departure from *bona fide* communication, seeking to harness the shortcomings of language, to create layered meanings and to trigger an additional effort from the recipient trying to make sense of incongruous or opaque utterances. Whilst ambiguity would be an enemy of efficient communication, it is a staple of both humour and poetry. Versification usually provides us with a reassuring sameness, and versified humour sometimes relies on this learned expectation of sameness, taking advantage of our prior knowledge in order to mislead us. This happens when an unexpected approximate rhyme brings to mind the obscene word that would provide a similar yet perfect rhyme. Or when the choice of a specific metre, with its baggage of associated uses and meanings, helps create parody or satire. Or even, very simply, when the stanzaic structure of a poem builds then breaks the monotony of lines, signaling the humorous intent of its punchline. In French, the punchline of a joke and the striking end of a poem are both named *la chute*: the fall. Verse has an ability to leave an impression on our minds and memories, and as such can readily serve persuasion efforts, from slogans or commercials to epic poems and state propaganda. Humour is often a deeply political reality. Despite its affinity with taboo subjects and irreverence, one of humour’s regular uses is to spread and maintain stereotypes, assert domination, and strengthen the feelings of belonging and allegiance through a so-called universality. This humour of the dominant tends to suppress minority voices and singular perspectives, requiring the dominated to laugh along in an effort to fit with the in-group. And yet, it can also be used as a weapon for attacking the order in place, voicing singularities, and questioning the established norms. Examining the powers of those two phenomena, one can wonder: What happens when a versified text is humorous, and what when a humorous text is in verse? Can shared regularities be found in the many verse forms of humorous texts? Can we measure those, and how? Should, or can, the funniness of it be taken into account, or even just its humorous intent, despite the high degree of cultural, linguistic and historical specificity? Papers addressing humour alongside verse or other highly-controlled and rhythmical forms are all welcome, whether written, read, sung or smuggled, from the lowest to the highest registers, from any time period and any language area. This focus on humour in verse is not an exclusive one, and we encourage the submission of papers that use quantitative tools and methods in investigating poetry or poeticity, regardless of their link to humorous poetry. Besides, as has been traditional at Plotting Poetry conferences, works on other genres may also be included, provided that a mechanization or quantification apparatus is being used to explore their poeticity. Some of the topics to consider include but are not limited to: - Verse forms and meters used and misused for lighter pieces - Stanzaic structures and their use in humour - Puns and their relationship to versification - Versification as a target of humour - Slogans and propaganda - Standup as poetry - Musical forms of humour (song, rap…) - … For this 7th Plotting Poetry conference, we will be convening in the Swiss village of Einsiedeln, in the canton of Schwyz. While doctoral degrees can vary in format and conduct, we aim this Call for Papers to PhD candidates who will have already partially investigated some specific problems. Students will be required to submit a paper to the doctoral consortium, structured like a research proposal. All proposals submitted to the Doctoral Consortium will undergo a careful review process by the International Programme Committee, who will provide detailed and constructive feedback and select those submissions to be presented at the Doctoral Consortium. Critical Perspectives and Intersections in the Digital Humanities. The interdisciplinary symposium aims to further explore the concepts of “lack of cultural criticism” (Fiormonte 2012) and “situated knowledge” (Haraway 1988), which have been conjugated in their multiple facets in the field of DH. In particular, it will focus on the active and embodied role of the researcher, on the opportunities created by the application of Information Technology to the Humanities, and on the challenges presented by the use of technological tools, that are usually considered neutral, but which deeply influence the epistemologies and practices of the Humanities themselves. The workshop focusing on the integration of data semantics, ontologies, moral values, and their societal impact About the Workshop: The growing influence of AI in our daily lives has transformed both the digital landscape and the way we generate, extract and represent information. The surge in using Large Language Models (LLMs) not only in academia and industry but among the public, has made it increasingly important to address the alignment of AI tools to moral and cultural human values. Despite ongoing governmental work on developing ethical guidelines and practical requirements for AI, for academic and industrial applications there is a particular importance to ensure that the research respective practical methods follow ethical practices and that the outcomes do not conflict with moral values. As hybridizing knowledge structures and semantic data with generative AI has a high impact potential for the development of increasingly more complex and intelligent systems, it becomes of the utmost important that such innovation adheres to the EU’s objective of realizing AI applications that are dependable, robust, explicable, ethically guided, and therefore trustworthy. Kind regards, Simone === LCS Digital Humanities Symposium. ‘Consuming fiction in a convergence culture’ School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of Leeds 5 June 2024 Call for papers This symposium is open to all scholars of languages, literature, film, media, game and narrative studies who are using digital methods in their research (or are studying digital media) and are interested in the themes of reception, reader and audience response, and cultural consumption more broadly. *Theme*: *C**onsuming fiction in a convergence culture* *When: 5 June 2024, University of Leeds* With this one-day Symposium we invite an interdisciplinary discussion on the reception and consumption of narrative fiction across different media and artforms. The event is open to all scholars of languages, literature, film, media, game and narrative studies who are using the frame of digital humanities and want to share their works and exchange ideas. At the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies of the University of Leeds we have been working on a project entitled ‘Audience engagement with Elena Ferrante’s storyworld. Consuming fiction in a convergence culture’. Using digital humanities methods, we are collecting and analysing social media data and metadata in order to investigate how ordinary readers and TV audiences respond to and engage with the storyworld created by Italian writer Elena Ferrante. By hosting the Symposium at Leeds, we hope to take stock of what is happening in the field, exchange ideas and methodologies arising from our individual case studies and promote discussions, networks and even collaboration among scholars who, in different disciplines, are working on cultural consumption and digital humanities. The day will involve keynote talks, research project presentations (10-15 minutes), and a round-table discussion.
