This workshop seeks to advance human-centred design principles and participatory approaches in AI development and contribute to the responsible adoption of these technologies. Our workshop features a distinguished lineup of keynote speakers, including (in alphabetical order): - Federico Cabitza (University of Milano-Bicocca, IT): "Measuring Social Impact in AI Systems" - Cristina Conati (University of British Columbia, CAN): "Community Perspectives in AI Research" - Marcello Ienca (Technical University of Munich, DE): "Policy Perspectives on AI Governance" - Caterina Moruzzi (Edinburgh University, UK): "Future Directions in Human-Centered AI" - Elisa Rubegni (Lancaster University, UK): "Human-Centred Design Principles in AI Development" - Niels van Berkel (Aalborg University, DK): "Successful Case Studies in Human-Centred AI" The programme includes dedicated panel sessions on the topics of "Bridging Technical Innovation and Social Impact", "Ethical Considerations in AI Development", "Implementation Challenges and Solutions" and "Shaping the Future of Human-Centred AI". Finally, a session will be dedicated to spot presentations (10 minutes) by participants that would like to present their own research. **Submission Guidelines** For the spot presentations session, we welcome short abstracts addressing, but not limited to, the following topics: - How can we design AI systems that meaningfully incorporate diverse human perspectives and needs throughout their development cycle? - What methodological frameworks can bridge the gap between technical AI capabilities and real-world social challenges? - How do we measure and evaluate the social impact of AI systems beyond traditional technical metrics? - What are effective approaches for participatory design in AI development, particularly when working with marginalised or vulnerable communities? - How can we ensure AI systems remain accountable to their intended social benefits throughout their lifecycle? "Matching Medieval Manuscripts with Machine Learning" Hannah Busch (University of Cologne) Wednesday 19 February 2025 4pm (GMT) (8am PT, 11am ET) Abstract: Large-scale digitization projects of the past twenty years and the possibility of exploitation with the help of the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) have substantially contributed to reaching a critical mass which allows the application of deep learning for the study of medieval book scripts. In the past years, not only the number of digitized medieval sources increased significantly, but also the quality of the image data. Parallel to this development, the computation of images is becoming more powerful, and—more importantly—affordable. During my presentation I am going to talk about the possibilities of dating and localizing the origin of medieval Latin manuscripts with the help of Deep Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence. I will be giving insights in how to approach such an undertaking of building an image similarity search based on palaeographical features of medieval Latin scripts. In particular, I’ll be focusing on the reuse of existing scholarly manuscript descriptions for the training of Artificial Neural Networks and the challenges that come with relying on those new technologies. How is the palaeographic information encoded in descriptive metadata? Can manuscript metadata be read and processed by the machine? Can it be used to teach Artificial Neural Networks which manuscript samples are similar by means of Latin palaeography? To conclude my presentation, I’d like to discuss how we can build a bridge between the output of the artificial palaeographic eye and the human readable descriptive metadata. Bio: Hannah Busch studied German-Italian Studies (BA) and Textual Scholarship (MA) in Bonn, Florence, and Berlin. She worked as a research associate at the Trier Center for Digital Humanities, and as a PhD candidate within the project “Digital Forensics for Historical Documents” at the Huygens Instituut (KNAW) in Amsterdam and at Leiden University. In her doctoral thesis, she is working on the application of deep machine learning methods for the dating and localization of medieval Latin manuscripts. Her research interests also lie in various areas of digital medieval studies, in particular the (mass) digitization of medieval written documents and experimentation with computer-aided methods for manuscript research. Semantic annotation is the process of tagging or (manually or automatically) labelling pieces of content—such as words, phrases, or objects in texts or images—with meaningful metadata to provide context and clarify meaning. Semantic annotation allows machines to process the meaning and relationships of content within a dataset, transforming raw data into structured knowledge. For example, a machine can recognize that “Athens” is a city, distinguish it from the other cities with the same name, and link it to related concepts, which improves ability to perform tasks like searching, or making inferences. By tagging concepts, entities, and relations, semantic annotation enables machines to interpret and process data more accurately, connecting data points across software, allowing for better searchability, advanced queries and further reuse via natural language processing and machine learning. Through this conference, we hope to foster collaboration and intellectual exchange amongst digital scholars of the ancient world. According to the principles of FAIR and Linked Open Data, we strive to promote openness and accessibility in all of the workflows and methods presented at the conference. In order to further encourage the open exchange of ideas, the conference will also include a round-table discussion. We welcome accepted participants to suggest topics to discuss. Dear all, You are warmly invited to a workshop on computer vision, hosted as part of the Unversity of Leeds School of English 'Digital Horizons in English Studies' seminar series <https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fahc.leeds…>, taking place on 26 February 11am-1pm GMT. *Giles Bergel (Senior Research in Digital Humanities, University of Oxford): 'How to study books with computer vision: a practical introduction'* Computer vision — or the extraction of data from images — is an established part of the digital humanist's toolkit. This workshop will introduce participants to some practical applications of computer vision for the study of the printed page, including illustration detection, visual search, difference detection and page-layout recognition, as well as some critical debates within visual AI studies. No prior knowledge of computer vision or coding experience is required, but participants will need a laptop. We will use web-based demos employing open source software created by the Visual Geometry Group at the University of Oxford, in association with humanities researchers studying the book and its contents. In a traditional workshop, the organizers may consider a program involving one or more invited talks and presentations of accepted papers around a certain theme. We encourage workshops focusing on emerging topics and applications, open research questions and challenges, and broader topics that interest a wider community. In addition, we also encourage workshops with previous editions in HHAI, which could attract communities that have been working in the same research area for some years. 2. Interactive Events In the spirit of reflection and community-building, we invite academics from all disciplines and people representing different communities of practice (including journalism, advocacy, activism, education, art, law, and policy) to contribute creative and reflective events related to HHAI. The format for these events is flexible. Alternative formats include but are not limited to: 2a. Lightning Talks: Short, time-limited presentations, usually lasting 5-10 minutes, where speakers quickly share key ideas or insights on a topic. They are designed to be concise and engaging, often used in conferences or workshops to cover a wide range of topics quickly. 2b. Debates or Rump Sessions: Informal, open-ended discussions where participants debate topics, share ideas, or discuss unresolved issues in a less structured format than formal sessions. Often, these discussions are lively and allow for spontaneous, free-flowing conversation; 2c. Unconference: A participant-driven, informal conference where attendees propose and lead sessions or discussions on topics of interest. Unlike traditional conferences with pre-scheduled agendas, an unconference allows for flexible, spontaneous collaboration and open sharing of ideas. 2d. Open space or world cafe sessions: Facilitative group discussion formats where participants engage in collaborative conversations on topics of mutual interest. In “Open Space”, attendees create their own agenda and move between discussions freely, while in “World Café”, small groups rotate between tables, sharing ideas in a structured, conversational environment. Both aim to foster open dialogue and collective problem-solving. 2e. Interactive Workshop: A hands-on, participatory session where attendees actively engage in activities, exercises, or discussions to learn and apply new skills or knowledge. The focus is on collaboration, practice, and direct involvement rather than passive listening. 2f. Competitions: they are a powerful tool for encouraging researchers to engage in discussions, exchange knowledge, and advance the development and assessment of theories and practices in hybrid intelligence systems. By introducing challenging competitions to the HHAI community, competition organizers can help push the state-of-the-art in specific fields and address problems of practical significance. 3. Tutorials: Unlike the workshops and interactive events, tutorials are intended for reasonably well-established topics. However, considering that HHAI is an emerging research topic, we particularly welcome tutorials that connect well-established topics in AI and other disciplines to HHAI topics. We encourage tutorials to be interactive to engage the audience. Call for Book Chapter Submissions: Critical Approaches to Automated Text Recognition

Call for Chapter Submissions: Critical Approaches to Automated Text Recognition Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit to a collection of essays tentatively entitled Critical Approaches to Automated Text Recognition, to be edited by Melissa Terras, Paul Gooding, Sarah Ames and Joe Nockels. Automated Text Recognition (ATR) (a process that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to extract text from a scanned image or document, including Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR)), has significantly evolved recently. ATR is impacting the accessibility of historical texts, the institutions that steward them, and the broader field of digital humanities. As the technology shifts from developmental stages to practical applications, it is crucial to scrutinize its impacts, potentials, and the ethical dimensions it intersects with. This edited collection aims to gather diverse perspectives on the complexities of ATR, emphasizing critical analyses to guide future developments, while urging a reflection on how this technology is reshaping our engagement with digital and historical texts, the institutions that host them, and the use and users of such resources. Proposals on any critical topic relating to automated and advanced text recognition (including OCR, HTR, etc) are welcome, but the editors are particularly interested in essays which engage with future possibilities in this space and consider how automated text recognition can have an impact beyond academia. A preliminary foray into this topic “The implications of handwritten text recognition for accessing the past at scale”, by Nockels, J., Gooding, P. and Terras, M. (2024), published in the Journal of Documentation (https://doi.org/10.1108/JD-09-2023-0183) suggested a number of relevant areas in need of further discussion, including: 1. Access to Multiple Voices, underrepresented groups and endangered languages – How ATR can highlight diverse perspectives and contribute to a more inclusive historical record. 2. Integrating the Results of ATR into Collection Systems and Processes – Examining the ramifications of integrating ATR results into digital collection infrastructures 3. Integration with Advanced AI Processes – Potential and issues of combining ATR with advanced AI techniques to enhance functionalities and improve analysis. 4. ATR and Legal Frameworks - Navigating legal challenges such as copyright and data privacy in the use of ATR. 5. Data Ethics and Bias - Addressing biases and ethical considerations in ATR processes and data to ensure responsibility and transparency 6. Environmental Costs of ATR - Considering the environmental impacts of computationally intensive ATR models and advocating for sustainable practices. 7. Establishing Data Sharing and Data Consent Principles - Adhering to FAIR and CARE principles for ethical data handling in ATR projects. 8. Near Future Issues for the Use of ATR with Historical Documents - Anticipating technological and ethical challenges in using ATR for historical documents. 9. Speculating ATR Design - Using speculative design methods to envision and plan future impacts of ATR on historical research and public engagement. 10. ATR Limitations - Addressing the challenges and shortcomings of ATR technology, including incomplete capture or interpretation of texts. Proposals based on these, or any other critical topic, are welcome. Chapter proposals of ~500 words plus brief biography will be accepted until March 31st, 2025. Submissions will undergo a peer-review process to ensure the relevance and quality of the contributions. Acceptances will be sent out May 2025. Feedback and revision suggestions will be provided for accepted proposals. Final chapters, which can range from 5000-7000 words in length, will be due in December 2025. Sorry for cross-posting. -------------------- Conference Call for Papers *Research Creation, Community Engagement, and Open Social Scholarship* May 1-3, 2025 Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia Deadline for submissions: January 24 2025 This conference will bring together key practitioners in research creation, open social scholarship, and community engagement to encourage broad and inclusive conversations about centring, empowering, and serving communities through humanities research that focuses on inclusive, generous processes. It will also play host to the 12th Implementing New Knowledge Environments (INKE) Partnership annual gathering. Humanities scholarship is traditionally and problematically disconnected from selfless commitments to creativity and community. However, a number of innovative research approaches work against such conventionally exclusive perceptions and practices. For example, research creation involves the use of artistic practices to ask questions and explore possibilities, to reflect and reveal our world back to ourselves, and to help us imagine ourselves otherwise. Additionally, radical community engagement practices feature researchers who generously, humbly, and respectfully work with and within community-led initiatives instead of leading, guiding, or exclusively determining such projects. Both of these approaches foreground and expand upon open social scholarship practices, which are motivated by a desire to shift our scholarly habits away from insularity, exclusivity, and self-referentiality toward inclusive accessibility. It will bring together researchers and practitioners involved in accessing or developing born-digital collections and archives, and those interested in exploring the novel and transformative effects of born-digital cultural heritage. The conference will also contribute to professional development, particularly for those in the cultural heritage sector interested in learning about new approaches to collecting and archiving born-digital materials. The conference will feature a wide range of sessions, including workshops, software demos, and talks. The keynote will be delivered by Dorothy Berry, Digital Curator for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Dear Colleagues, We are delighted to invite you to submit a paper to our panel at the upcoming 4S Annual Meeting in Seattle (2025). Titled "The Environmental Footprint of AI in the Context of the Twin Transitions: Quantification, Assessment, and Controversies" our panel critically examines the environmental implications of artificial intelligence (AI) as it intersects with the policy discourses on the so-called "twin transitions" of digitalization and sustainability. AI is often promoted as a tool to optimize environmental management across sectors like mobility, agriculture, and construction, offering sociotechnical promises of efficiency gains and reduced emissions. However, these promises are increasingly subject to critical scrutiny, particularly in light of the environmental costs of AI’s development and deployment. The complexities of rebound effects—where efficiency gains paradoxically lead to increased resource consumption—further intensify the need for nuanced, empirically grounded analysis. Our panel aims to explore the politics of quantification and its implications for AI governance. We welcome contributions addressing the following themes: - Institutional responses to governance tensions around AI’s environmental footprint within the “twin transitions.” - The mobilization of numbers by states, industries, NGOs, and think tanks to support or contest AI’s role in sustainability transitions. - Methodological diversity and contestation in measuring AI’s environmental impact across disciplines and sectors. Papers that address related lines of inquiry are also welcome. Selected contributions will be integrated into an editorial project advancing critical debates on AI, quantification, and environmental governance. In a world where artificial intelligence is redefining the boundaries of knowledge, it is indeed crucial to explore how this transformation can be guided by principles of inclusiveness and equity. While one track of the conference will be devoted exclusively to this issue, all the different parts of the Digital Humanities are affected by it in various ways. Starting with the computational part, which needs to better understand its tools to counter biases and distortions, but which can also use them to democratize access to knowledge and culture. Access which, in turn, can be fostered by good practices in the digitization of works and documents, by supporting, for example, the encoding of accessible digital editions for all types of users. In the field of knowledge representation, then, the concept of accessibility is already inscribed at the heart of the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability), which need increasingly virtuous applications within digital heritage preservation practices. Preservation which, finally, is at the heart of contemporary challenges to ensure that cultural heritage is not only safeguarded, but also made accessible and understandable to a global and diverse audience. Therefore, papers relevant to the following conference tracks are invited: 1) Digital Humanities and Inclusion Proposals related to issues of inclusion in the Digital Humanities from multiple perspectives are welcomed: from accessibility at the level of research, teaching, infrastructure, and outreach, to practices for overcoming gender, economic, social, and cultural disparities. Specific topics of interest include: minority representation in digital projects; accessibility of digital resources for disadvantaged communities; the role of digital humanities in bridging the digital divide; innovative methodological approaches to make digital projects more inclusive and participatory. 2) Archives and Digital Editions We welcome both theoretical and applied proposals on (a) the representation and organisation of techniques and problems in the fields of digitisation, the organisation of born-digital heritage and methods for its archiving; (b) themes, issues, and applications pertaining to digital critical editions, to modes of visualisation and interrogation of online texts, and alternative means of encoding. 3) Computational Methods Papers are welcomed that explore methods and tools for computational analysis of cultural heritage, including advanced approaches based on cutting-edge technologies in Artificial Intelligence. Reflections on the state of the art, up to the latest theoretical frameworks, are also encouraged, with the aim of highlighting future developments and perspectives in the field. Included are approaches for the analysis of literary texts and *corpora*, touching upon computational models for literary criticism on the one hand, and research in computational linguistics and natural language processing on the other. Papers on analysis and visualization methods such as Network Analysis and Mapping are also welcomed. 4) Data and Knowledge Representation Special attention will be given to knowledge representation and the use of Semantic Web and Linked Open Data technologies. We welcome proposals concerning the design of conceptual models, knowledge graphs, ontologies and technologies of the Semantic Web with respect to cultural heritage and the Digital Humanities, the creation of datasets and applications that conform to the FAIR principles, the production of Linked Open Data in these domains, as well as the automated extraction of metadata, named entities and models from cultural heritage resources. 5) Preservation of Memory and Digital Heritage We welcome proposals concerning memory and digital cultural heritage preservation, particularly relating to the research outputs in the Digital Humanities. We also encourage proposals addressing the challenges of digital infrastructure and the problems of sustainability posed by projects involving digitisation and the conservation of born-digital collections, as well as proposals on the implementation of best practices for the preservation of, and effective access to, cultural heritage. Guidelines for the Submission of Proposals The conference envisages participation by oral communication (paper) or poster. At the proposal stage, authors are asked to specifify in which mode they intend to present the paper, whether by oral or poster communication. Following peer review, the Scientific Committee may decide whether the accepted contribution is more suitable for an oral communication or a poster presentation. It should be noted that there is no difference in quality between contributions assigned to one or the other mode of presentation: oral presentations are generally more appropriate for theoretical and methodological work, including that relating to actual applications; posters, optionally presented with a demo, are better suited to the description of projects, tools or digital resources. All proposals must be submitted in the form of a contribution of a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of five (5) pages, excluding bibliography. The submission format for contributions must adhere to the template (updated from previous years) and directions found on the page Information for Authors <https://aiucd2025.dlls.univr.it/en-gb/informations-for-authors/>. Contributions that do not adhere to the template and directions will be rejected without considering their content. Neither plagiarism nor self-plagiarism is tolerated. Please note that a plagiarism checking tool may be applied to submitted contributions. The use of Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, is not permitted unless the generated text is submitted as part of the experimental analysis, or the generative AI tool was used only for editing and refinement of the authors’ work. However, all uses must be explicitly stated in the submitted contribution. Contributions must be submitted, in PDF format only, using the dedicated platform <https://aiucd2025.dlls.univr.it/en-gb/submission/>. Proposals must be anonymised. Author names and any internal references should be removed to the extent possible so as to not compromise reviewers’ assessment of the proposal. A maximum of two proposals in the five tracks of the call can be submitted as the first contributing author. At the conference, authors will be allowed to present a maximum of two accepted contributions as either first or co-authors. In any case, at least one of the authors must register for the conference for the contribution to be accepted. The official languages of the conference are Italian and English. Authors can present in either language, regardless of the one used in their written proposal. Evaluation Criteria Proposals will be evaluated through a “double-blind” review process. Each contribution will be submitted to at least two reviewers. Proposal evaluation will be conducted based on the following criteria: - relevance of the contribution to the purpose of the conference; - innovativeness and relevance of the contribution; - methodological rigor; - critical analysis of the literature on the topics covered and relevant and up-to-date bibliography; - appropriateness of theoretical and conceptual approach to the relevant domain; - quality of exposition and adequacy of organization of the contribution; - critical attitude toward the adopted methodologies and the tools in use; - replicability of the results (with the exception of theoretical reflections). In un mondo in cui l’intelligenza artificiale sta ridefinendo i confini del sapere, è infatti fondamentale esplorare come questa trasformazione possa essere guidata da principi di inclusività ed equità. Mentre un track del convegno sarà dedicato esclusivamente a questa tematica, tutte le diverse anime delle Digital Humanities ne sono in vario modo investite. A partire da quella più puramente computazionale, che necessita di meglio comprendere i propri strumenti per contrastare bias e distorsioni, ma che può anche utilizzarli per democratizzare l’accesso al sapere e alla cultura. Accesso il quale, a sua volta, può essere favorito da buone pratiche nella digitalizzazione di opere e documenti, supportando per esempio la codifica di edizioni digitali accessibili per ogni tipo di utenza. Nell’ambito della rappresentazione della conoscenza, poi, il concetto di accessibilità è già inscritto al cuore dei principi FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability), i quali necessitano di una sempre più virtuosa applicazione in seno alle pratiche di preservazione del patrimonio digitale. Preservazione la quale, infine, è al centro delle sfide contemporanee per garantire che l’eredità culturale non solo sia salvaguardata, ma anche resa accessibile e comprensibile a un pubblico globale e diversificato. Sono quindi incoraggiati interventi pertinenti ai seguenti assi portanti della conferenza: 1) Digital Humanities e inclusione Si accolgono proposte relative alle tematiche dell’inclusione nell’ambito delle Digital Humanities sotto molteplici aspetti: dall’accessibilità a livello di ricerca, didattica, infrastrutture e divulgazione, alle pratiche per il superamento delle disparità di genere, economiche, sociali e culturali. Si incoraggiano inoltre riflessioni sullo stato dell’arte, fino ai più recenti quadri teorici di riferimento, con l’obiettivo di evidenziare sviluppi e prospettive future nel campo. Sono inclusi gli approcci per l’analisi di testi letterari e *corpora*, che tocchino da un lato i modelli computazionali per la critica letteraria, dall’altro le ricerche di linguistica computazionale e le tecniche di elaborazione del linguaggio naturale. Si accolgono anche interventi su metodi di analisi e visualizzazione come Network Analysis e Mapping. 4) Rappresentazione di dati e conoscenza Particolare attenzione sarà riservata alle riflessioni sull’organizzazione della conoscenza e sull’impiego di tecnologie del Semantic Web e dei Linked Open Data. Si accolgono proposte di progettazione di modelli concettuali, grafi di conoscenza, ontologie e tecnologie del Semantic Web per i Beni Culturali e le Digital Humanities, di creazione di dataset e applicazioni conformi ai principi FAIR, di produzione di Linked Open Data nei settori dei Beni Culturali e delle Digital Humanities, di estrazione automatica di metadati, entità e modelli da risorse del patrimonio culturale. 5) Preservazione della memoria e del patrimonio digitale Sono attesi interventi riguardanti la conservazione della memoria e del patrimonio culturale digitale, incluse specifiche riflessioni sulla preservazione degli esiti delle ricerche in Digital Humanities e dei progetti scientifici digitali. Sono incoraggiati anche interventi sulle criticità infrastrutturali e sui problemi di sostenibilità dei progetti legati alla digitalizzazione e alla conservazione di collezioni nate digitalmente, nonché proposte per la messa in atto di buone pratiche che garantiscano, oltre alla preservazione, anche l’accesso effettivo al patrimonio. Formato e modalità di invio delle proposte Il convegno prevede la partecipazione tramite intervento orale (paper) o poster. Nella fase di proposta si richiede alle autrici e agli autori di specificare in quale modalità intendono presentare l’articolo, se con una comunicazione orale o con un poster. A seguito della peer review, il Comitato Scientifico potrà decidere se il contributo accettato sia più adatto a una comunicazione orale o a una presentazione a mezzo poster. Si precisa che non c’è differenza di qualità tra i contributi assegnati all’una o all’altra modalità di presentazione: gli interventi orali sono di norma più adatti a riflessioni teoriche e metodologiche, anche connesse a esperienze sul campo; i poster, eventualmente affiancati da demo, sono particolarmente adatti alla descrizione di specifici progetti, strumenti, risorse digitali. [Apologies for crossposting] Dear Colleagues, I gladly share with you the Call for Papers and Panels of the Second International Workshop of Semantic Digital Humanities, which will be held on June 1st or 2nd, 2025 in Portoroz, Slovenia, co-located with the Extended Semantic Web Conference 2025 (ESWC2025). I also want to highlight that we will offer scholarships for students that will present at the workshop and do not have funds to travel and participate in person to the event. We invite all members of Semantic Web, CH and DH communities actively involved in the development of systematic approaches and advanced technologies for handling heterogeneous, diverse and challenging humanities data. This includes, but is not limited to, constructing and utilizing of knowledge graphs for the humanities, extracting and representing knowledge from historical texts, data linking across disciplines, enriching semantics of historical records and biographies, analyzing social networks, ontology adoption, extension and evaluation for specific domains. In addition, it includes the exploitation of recent technologies, e.g. LLM(s), in the context of semantic technologies, to tackle the diverse challenges associated with working with historical data. We welcome presentations that not only focus on technological endeavours but also explore the analysis of CH and DH data landscape through the perspective of philosophical, historical, social, and other research questions. Apart from research, resource and work-in-progress papers, we encourage the audience to submit panel proposals. Best regards, Simone Rebora Call for Papers (ENG) AIUCD 2025 - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Challenges and Opportunities for Digital Humanities in the Age of Artificial Intelligence The conference provides an opportunity for large-scale discussions in the various research areas of the Digital Humanities, with a particular focus on issues of inclusiveness. In a world where artificial intelligence is redefining the boundaries of knowledge, it is indeed crucial to explore how this transformation can be guided by principles of inclusiveness and equity. While one track of the conference will be devoted exclusively to this issue, all the different parts of the Digital Humanities are affected by it in various ways. Starting with the computational part, which needs to better understand its tools to counter biases and distortions, but which can also use them to democratize access to knowledge and culture. Access which, in turn, can be fostered by good practices in the digitization of works and documents, by supporting, for example, the encoding of accessible digital editions for all types of users. In the field of knowledge representation, then, the concept of accessibility is already inscribed at the heart of the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability), which need increasingly virtuous applications within digital heritage preservation practices. Preservation which, finally, is at the heart of contemporary challenges to ensure that cultural heritage is not only safeguarded, but also made accessible and understandable to a global and diverse audience. Therefore, papers relevant to the following conference tracks are invited: 1) Digital Humanities and Inclusion Proposals related to issues of inclusion in the Digital Humanities from multiple perspectives are welcomed: from accessibility at the level of research, teaching, infrastructure, and outreach, to practices for overcoming gender, economic, social, and cultural disparities. Specific topics of interest include: minority representation in digital projects; accessibility of digital resources for disadvantaged communities; the role of digital humanities in bridging the digital divide; innovative methodological approaches to make digital projects more inclusive and participatory. 2) Archives and Digital Editions We welcome both theoretical and applied proposals on (a) the representation and organisation of techniques and problems in the fields of digitisation, the organisation of born-digital heritage and methods for its archiving; (b) themes, issues, and applications pertaining to digital critical editions, to modes of visualisation and interrogation of online texts, and alternative means of encoding. 3) Computational Methods Papers are welcomed that explore methods and tools for computational analysis of cultural heritage, including advanced approaches based on cutting-edge technologies in Artificial Intelligence. Reflections on the state of the art, up to the latest theoretical frameworks, are also encouraged, with the aim of highlighting future developments and perspectives in the field. Included are approaches for the analysis of literary texts and *corpora*, touching upon computational models for literary criticism on the one hand, and research in computational linguistics and natural language processing on the other. Papers on analysis and visualization methods such as Network Analysis and Mapping are also welcomed. 4) Data and Knowledge Representation Special attention will be given to knowledge representation and the use of Semantic Web and Linked Open Data technologies. We welcome proposals concerning the design of conceptual models, knowledge graphs, ontologies and technologies of the Semantic Web with respect to cultural heritage and the Digital Humanities, the creation of datasets and applications that conform to the FAIR principles, the production of Linked Open Data in these domains, as well as the automated extraction of metadata, named entities and models from cultural heritage resources. 5) Preservation of Memory and Digital Heritage We welcome proposals concerning memory and digital cultural heritage preservation, particularly relating to the research outputs in the Digital Humanities. We also encourage proposals addressing the challenges of digital infrastructure and the problems of sustainability posed by projects involving digitisation and the conservation of born-digital collections, as well as proposals on the implementation of best practices for the preservation of, and effective access to, cultural heritage. Guidelines for the Submission of Proposals The conference envisages participation by oral communication (paper) or poster. At the proposal stage, authors are asked to specifify in which mode they intend to present the paper, whether by oral or poster communication. Following peer review, the Scientific Committee may decide whether the accepted contribution is more suitable for an oral communication or a poster presentation. It should be noted that there is no difference in quality between contributions assigned to one or the other mode of presentation: oral presentations are generally more appropriate for theoretical and methodological work, including that relating to actual applications; posters, optionally presented with a demo, are better suited to the description of projects, tools or digital resources. All proposals must be submitted in the form of a contribution of a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of five (5) pages, excluding bibliography. The submission format for contributions must adhere to the template (updated from previous years) and directions found on the page Information for Authors <https://aiucd2025.dlls.univr.it/en-gb/informations-for-authors/>. Contributions that do not adhere to the template and directions will be rejected without considering their content. Neither plagiarism nor self-plagiarism is tolerated. Please note that a plagiarism checking tool may be applied to submitted contributions. The use of Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, is not permitted unless the generated text is submitted as part of the experimental analysis, or the generative AI tool was used only for editing and refinement of the authors’ work. However, all uses must be explicitly stated in the submitted contribution. Contributions must be submitted, in PDF format only, using the dedicated platform <https://aiucd2025.dlls.univr.it/en-gb/submission/>. Proposals must be anonymised. Author names and any internal references should be removed to the extent possible so as to not compromise reviewers’ assessment of the proposal. A maximum of two proposals in the five tracks of the call can be submitted as the first contributing author. At the conference, authors will be allowed to present a maximum of two accepted contributions as either first or co-authors. In any case, at least one of the authors must register for the conference for the contribution to be accepted. The official languages of the conference are Italian and English. Authors can present in either language, regardless of the one used in their written proposal. Evaluation Criteria Proposals will be evaluated through a “double-blind” review process. Each contribution will be submitted to at least two reviewers. Proposal evaluation will be conducted based on the following criteria: - relevance of the contribution to the purpose of the conference; - innovativeness and relevance of the contribution; - methodological rigor; - critical analysis of the literature on the topics covered and relevant and up-to-date bibliography; - appropriateness of theoretical and conceptual approach to the relevant domain; - quality of exposition and adequacy of organization of the contribution; - critical attitude toward the adopted methodologies and the tools in use; - replicability of the results (with the exception of theoretical reflections). A camera-ready copy of the proposal must be submitted no later than April 11, 2025. =============== =============== =============== Call for papers (ITA) AIUCD 2025 - Diversità, equità e inclusione: sfide e opportunità per l’informatica umanistica nell’era dell’intelligenza artificiale Il convegno rappresenta un’occasione di confronto su larga scala nei diversi ambiti di ricerca delle Digital Humanities, con un’attenzione particolare alle tematiche dell’inclusione. In un mondo in cui l’intelligenza artificiale sta ridefinendo i confini del sapere, è infatti fondamentale esplorare come questa trasformazione possa essere guidata da principi di inclusività ed equità. Mentre un track del convegno sarà dedicato esclusivamente a questa tematica, tutte le diverse anime delle Digital Humanities ne sono in vario modo investite. A partire da quella più puramente computazionale, che necessita di meglio comprendere i propri strumenti per contrastare bias e distorsioni, ma che può anche utilizzarli per democratizzare l’accesso al sapere e alla cultura. Accesso il quale, a sua volta, può essere favorito da buone pratiche nella digitalizzazione di opere e documenti, supportando per esempio la codifica di edizioni digitali accessibili per ogni tipo di utenza. Nell’ambito della rappresentazione della conoscenza, poi, il concetto di accessibilità è già inscritto al cuore dei principi FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability), i quali necessitano di una sempre più virtuosa applicazione in seno alle pratiche di preservazione del patrimonio digitale. Preservazione la quale, infine, è al centro delle sfide contemporanee per garantire che l’eredità culturale non solo sia salvaguardata, ma anche resa accessibile e comprensibile a un pubblico globale e diversificato. Sono quindi incoraggiati interventi pertinenti ai seguenti assi portanti della conferenza: 1) Digital Humanities e inclusione Si accolgono proposte relative alle tematiche dell’inclusione nell’ambito delle Digital Humanities sotto molteplici aspetti: dall’accessibilità a livello di ricerca, didattica, infrastrutture e divulgazione, alle pratiche per il superamento delle disparità di genere, economiche, sociali e culturali. Gli specifici temi di interesse includono: la rappresentazione delle minoranze nei progetti digitali; l’accessibilità delle risorse digitali per comunità svantaggiate; il ruolo delle Digital Humanities nel colmare il divario digitale; approcci metodologici innovativi per rendere i progetti digitali più inclusivi e partecipativi. 2) Archivi ed edizioni digitali Si accolgono interventi di tipo metodologico e applicativo su: a) rappresentazione e organizzazione delle tecniche e criticità nel campo della digitalizzazione, dell’organizzazione del patrimonio nato digitalmente e delle modalità della sua archiviazione; b) temi, questioni, applicazioni inerenti alle edizioni scientifiche digitali, alle modalità di visualizzazione e interrogazione dei testi disponibili in rete nelle varie modalità di codifica. 3) Metodi computazionali Si accolgono interventi che esplorino metodi e strumenti per l’analisi computazionale del patrimonio culturale, inclusi approcci avanzati basati sulle tecnologie più all’avanguardia nell’ambito dell’Intelligenza Artificiale. Si incoraggiano inoltre riflessioni sullo stato dell’arte, fino ai più recenti quadri teorici di riferimento, con l’obiettivo di evidenziare sviluppi e prospettive future nel campo. Sono inclusi gli approcci per l’analisi di testi letterari e *corpora*, che tocchino da un lato i modelli computazionali per la critica letteraria, dall’altro le ricerche di linguistica computazionale e le tecniche di elaborazione del linguaggio naturale. Si accolgono anche interventi su metodi di analisi e visualizzazione come Network Analysis e Mapping. 4) Rappresentazione di dati e conoscenza Particolare attenzione sarà riservata alle riflessioni sull’organizzazione della conoscenza e sull’impiego di tecnologie del Semantic Web e dei Linked Open Data. Si accolgono proposte di progettazione di modelli concettuali, grafi di conoscenza, ontologie e tecnologie del Semantic Web per i Beni Culturali e le Digital Humanities, di creazione di dataset e applicazioni conformi ai principi FAIR, di produzione di Linked Open Data nei settori dei Beni Culturali e delle Digital Humanities, di estrazione automatica di metadati, entità e modelli da risorse del patrimonio culturale. 5) Preservazione della memoria e del patrimonio digitale Sono attesi interventi riguardanti la conservazione della memoria e del patrimonio culturale digitale, incluse specifiche riflessioni sulla preservazione degli esiti delle ricerche in Digital Humanities e dei progetti scientifici digitali. Sono incoraggiati anche interventi sulle criticità infrastrutturali e sui problemi di sostenibilità dei progetti legati alla digitalizzazione e alla conservazione di collezioni nate digitalmente, nonché proposte per la messa in atto di buone pratiche che garantiscano, oltre alla preservazione, anche l’accesso effettivo al patrimonio. Formato e modalità di invio delle proposte Il convegno prevede la partecipazione tramite intervento orale (paper) o poster. Nella fase di proposta si richiede alle autrici e agli autori di specificare in quale modalità intendono presentare l’articolo, se con una comunicazione orale o con un poster. A seguito della peer review, il Comitato Scientifico potrà decidere se il contributo accettato sia più adatto a una comunicazione orale o a una presentazione a mezzo poster. Si precisa che non c’è differenza di qualità tra i contributi assegnati all’una o all’altra modalità di presentazione: gli interventi orali sono di norma più adatti a riflessioni teoriche e metodologiche, anche connesse a esperienze sul campo; i poster, eventualmente affiancati da demo, sono particolarmente adatti alla descrizione di specifici progetti, strumenti, risorse digitali. Tutte le proposte devono essere inviate nella forma di contributo di un minimo di tre (3) pagine fino a un massimo di cinque (5) pagine, bibliografia esclusa. Il formato di presentazione dei contributi deve attenersi al template (aggiornato rispetto agli anni precedenti) e alle indicazioni che si trovano nella pagina relativa alle Informazioni per gli Autori <https://aiucd2025.dlls.univr.it/informations-for-authors/>. Contributi che non si attengano al template e alle indicazioni saranno rifiutati senza entrare nel merito del contenuto. Non sono tollerati né il plagio né l’auto-plagio. Si ricorda che uno strumento di controllo del plagio potrà essere applicato ai contributi inviati. L’utilizzo di Large Language Model (LLM), come ChatGPT, non è consentito a meno che il testo generato non sia presentato come parte dell’analisi sperimentale, o che l’IA generativa sia stata utilizzata solo per la modifica e perfezionamento del lavoro degli autori. Tutti gli utilizzi dovranno comunque essere esplicitamente dichiarati nel contributo inviato. Il contributo deve essere anonimizzato togliendo i nomi degli autori e i riferimenti interni, nei limiti del possibile, senza che ciò impedisca una valutazione accurata della proposta da parte dei revisori. È possibile presentare in qualità di primo autore di contributo, un massimo di due proposte nei cinque track della call. In sede della conferenza è possibile presentare al massimo due contributi, di cui si è autori o coautori, tra quelli eventualmente accettati. In ogni caso, perché il contributo sia accettato è necessario che almeno uno degli autori si iscriva al convegno. Le lingue ufficiali della conferenza sono l’italiano e l’inglese. La scelta dell’una o dell’altra per il contributo non è vincolante per la comunicazione in sede di convegno. Criteri di valutazione delle proposte Le proposte saranno valutate attraverso un processo di revisione “a doppio cieco”. Ciascun contributo sarà sottoposto ad almeno due revisori. La valutazione delle proposte sarà condotta sulla base dei seguenti criteri: - attinenza del contributo alle finalità della conferenza; - innovatività e rilevanza del contributo; - rigore metodologico; - analisi critica della letteratura sui temi trattati e bibliografia pertinente e aggiornata; - adeguatezza dell’impostazione teorica e concettuale rispetto al dominio di riferimento; - qualità dell’esposizione e adeguatezza dell’organizzazione del contributo; - atteggiamento critico verso le strategie adottate e gli strumenti in uso; - replicabilità dei risultati descritti (con l’eccezione per le riflessioni teoriche). Dear all, You are warmly invited to a talk on computer vision, hosted as part of the University of Leeds School of English 'Digital Horizons in English Studies' seminar series <https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fahc.leeds…>, taking place next Wednesday 15 January on Zoom (1pm GMT): Thomas Smits (Assistant Professor of Digital History and AI at the University of Amsterdam): 'Making Victorian News Images Searchable: A Computational Approach to the *Illustrated London News*, 1842-1899'. The* Illustrated London News *(ILN) revolutionized Victorian media by pioneering the integration of high-quality wood engravings with news content, reaching over a million viewers at its peak. While digitization has enabled text-based analysis of the ILN, its visual content remains difficult to explore and analyse. We address this challenge by presenting a dataset of 72,081 wood-engraved illustrations extracted from the ILN (1842-1890), accompanied by multimodal embeddings and a Flask application for retrieval. We create a searchable corpus of the ILN that enables users to find illustrations using textual queries, (modern) images, or image-text combinations. The resulting dataset and application allow flexible analysis of nineteenth-century visual representations of news, and suggest new avenues for research in computational humanities, media history, periodical studies, and visual culture studies. At the same time, this presentation also underscores the limitations of interpreting historical imagery with modern AI models, identifying the potential effects of bias and interpretive distortion. The Doctoral Consortium will take place in person at the HHAI 2025 conference. The DC provides an opportunity to present and discuss their doctoral research ideas and progress in a supportive, formative and yet critical environment and receive feedback from reviewers, mentors and peers from the field of Hybrid Intelligence. The Doctoral Consortium will also provide opportunities to network and build collaborations with other members of the HHAI community. Best regards, Simone Rebora Call for Papers (ENG) AIUCD 2025 - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Challenges and Opportunities for Digital Humanities in the Age of Artificial Intelligence The conference provides an opportunity for large-scale discussions in the various research areas of the Digital Humanities, with a particular focus on issues of inclusiveness. In a world where artificial intelligence is redefining the boundaries of knowledge, it is indeed crucial to explore how this transformation can be guided by principles of inclusiveness and equity. While one track of the conference will be devoted exclusively to this issue, all the different parts of the Digital Humanities are affected by it in various ways. Starting with the computational part, which needs to better understand its tools to counter biases and distortions, but which can also use them to democratize access to knowledge and culture. Access which, in turn, can be fostered by good practices in the digitization of works and documents, by supporting, for example, the encoding of accessible digital editions for all types of users. In the field of knowledge representation, then, the concept of accessibility is already inscribed at the heart of the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability), which need increasingly virtuous applications within digital heritage preservation practices. Preservation which, finally, is at the heart of contemporary challenges to ensure that cultural heritage is not only safeguarded, but also made accessible and understandable to a global and diverse audience. Therefore, papers relevant to the following conference tracks are invited: 1) Digital Humanities and Inclusion Proposals related to issues of inclusion in the Digital Humanities from multiple perspectives are welcomed: from accessibility at the level of research, teaching, infrastructure, and outreach, to practices for overcoming gender, economic, social, and cultural disparities. Specific topics of interest include: minority representation in digital projects; accessibility of digital resources for disadvantaged communities; the role of digital humanities in bridging the digital divide; innovative methodological approaches to make digital projects more inclusive and participatory. 2) Archives and Digital Editions We welcome both theoretical and applied proposals on (a) the representation and organisation of techniques and problems in the fields of digitisation, the organisation of born-digital heritage and methods for its archiving; (b) themes, issues, and applications pertaining to digital critical editions, to modes of visualisation and interrogation of online texts, and alternative means of encoding. 3) Computational Methods Papers are welcomed that explore methods and tools for computational analysis of cultural heritage, including advanced approaches based on cutting-edge technologies in Artificial Intelligence. Reflections on the state of the art, up to the latest theoretical frameworks, are also encouraged, with the aim of highlighting future developments and perspectives in the field. Included are approaches for the analysis of literary texts and *corpora*, touching upon computational models for literary criticism on the one hand, and research in computational linguistics and natural language processing on the other. Papers on analysis and visualization methods such as Network Analysis and Mapping are also welcomed. 4) Data and Knowledge Representation Special attention will be given to knowledge representation and the use of Semantic Web and Linked Open Data technologies. We welcome proposals concerning the design of conceptual models, knowledge graphs, ontologies and technologies of the Semantic Web with respect to cultural heritage and the Digital Humanities, the creation of datasets and applications that conform to the FAIR principles, the production of Linked Open Data in these domains, as well as the automated extraction of metadata, named entities and models from cultural heritage resources. 5) Preservation of Memory and Digital Heritage We welcome proposals concerning memory and digital cultural heritage preservation, particularly relating to the research outputs in the Digital Humanities. We also encourage proposals addressing the challenges of digital infrastructure and the problems of sustainability posed by projects involving digitisation and the conservation of born-digital collections, as well as proposals on the implementation of best practices for the preservation of, and effective access to, cultural heritage. Guidelines for the Submission of Proposals The conference envisages participation by oral communication (paper) or poster. At the proposal stage, authors are asked to specifify in which mode they intend to present the paper, whether by oral or poster communication. Following peer review, the Scientific Committee may decide whether the accepted contribution is more suitable for an oral communication or a poster presentation. It should be noted that there is no difference in quality between contributions assigned to one or the other mode of presentation: oral presentations are generally more appropriate for theoretical and methodological work, including that relating to actual applications; posters, optionally presented with a demo, are better suited to the description of projects, tools or digital resources. All proposals must be submitted in the form of a contribution of a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of five (5) pages, excluding bibliography. The submission format for contributions must adhere to the template (updated from previous years) and directions found on the page Information for Authors <https://aiucd2025.dlls.univr.it/en-gb/informations-for-authors/>. Contributions that do not adhere to the template and directions will be rejected without considering their content. Neither plagiarism nor self-plagiarism is tolerated. The use of Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, is not permitted unless the generated text is submitted as part of the experimental analysis, or the generative AI tool was used only for editing and refinement of the authors’ work. However, all uses must be explicitly stated in the submitted contribution. Author names and any internal references should be removed to the extent possible so as to not compromise reviewers’ assessment of the proposal. Authors can present in either language, regardless of the one used in their written proposal. Evaluation Criteria Proposals will be evaluated through a “double-blind” review process. Each contribution will be submitted to at least two reviewers. Proposal evaluation will be conducted based on the following criteria: - relevance of the contribution to the purpose of the conference; - innovativeness and relevance of the contribution; - methodological rigor; - critical analysis of the literature on the topics covered and relevant and up-to-date bibliography; - appropriateness of theoretical and conceptual approach to the relevant domain; - quality of exposition and adequacy of organization of the contribution; - critical attitude toward the adopted methodologies and the tools in use; - replicability of the results (with the exception of theoretical reflections). The evolution of the Semantic Web, the widespread adoption of the smartphone, and the rise of social media have transformed our cultural and social lives. Recent advancements and the commercialisation of Generative Artificial Intelligence hold the potential to significantly change the ways in which we access and interact with digital environments, creating new possibilities and risks. The *2025 themed conference of the Society for Italian Studies in the UK and Ireland (SIS), Italian Studies at the Digital Turn. Practice, Methods, Interdisciplinarity,* held at the *University of Leeds, 23-24 June 2025*, will explore how the field of Italian Studies has responded to this ‘digital turn.’ We would like this event to be inclusive and to act as a bridge between those who have been engaging with the digital for a short or long time, those who study it, those who are considering using it, and those who want to learn more about the state of the art of digital use in the broad field of Italian Studies. [with the usual apologies for cross-posting] Dear community, It's with great pleasure that I invite you to submit your proposals for the forthcoming 20th conference of the European Society of Textual Scholarship, which will be held in Tours 28-30 April 2025. Manuscripts in the Age of Print ======================== The invention and relatively rapid dissemination of print in 15th- and 16th-century Western Europe did not replace manuscript culture. Whether in the form of draft manuscripts, letters and journals, note-taking, margin annotations, manuscript dissemination to escape control, or documentary records, the two media—print and manuscript—continued to coexist, intertwining and influencing each other in complex ways across the globe. In various regions, from Europe to Asia, Africa, and the Americas, manuscripts remained central to intellectual, cultural, and religious practices, often complementing or resisting the spread of print. Although recent scholarship has addressed this dynamic in specific contexts, manuscript production is still rarely considered as a distinct phenomenon in the early modern and modern periods across different cultures. This oversight neglects the profound impact manuscripts had on intellectual and cultural life worldwide, where they served as vessels for innovation, subversion, and the preservation of alternative voices. Moreover, it overlooks the materiality of manuscripts, which developed in specific local and regional contexts, conveying unique physical characteristics that shaped both the form and content of the works themselves. The conference will explore these and other uses of manuscripts, welcoming contributions that address: • Manuscript production and circulation during the early modern and modern periods • Modern codicology and handwriting studies • Print-to-manuscript and manuscript-to-print transitions and their coexistence • Hybridization of the two media across different periods and regions • Digital representation and analysis of such documents, including Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) and quantitative codicology • Study and assembling of public and private archives and libraries • Scholarly editing of manuscripts and hybrid documents • Textuality of texts transmitted through manuscripts • Social networks and manuscript production (e.g., how social relationships, patronage, and collaboration among scribes, authors, and intellectuals influenced manuscript production and content) • Cross-cultural manuscript traditions (e.g., interactions between different manuscript practices and production centers, including trade, diplomacy, and scholarly exchanges across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and other regions) • Censorship and media circulation We also welcome contributions that examine the global persistence of manuscript culture alongside print in the early modern and modern periods, taking into account the diversity of manuscript traditions worldwide. This includes exploring how manuscripts remained essential for knowledge transmission, record-keeping, and resisting dominant discourses, even as print technologies became increasingly prevalent. Other topics such as the theory and practice of textual scholarship and digital textual scholarship will also be welcomed. Contributions to the ESTS Conference may take the following forms: Research Papers Individual scholars are welcome to submit proposals for papers which may then be selected for panels. 20 minutes in length. Please supply an abstract of 250 words (max) + bio of 100 words (max). Panel sessions We also invite groups of scholars (3 speakers) to submit proposals for thematically linked research paper panels. 90 minutes in length (3 x 20 minute papers + Q&A). The Department of German and Art Studies, Institute of Art History at University of Marburg is currently accepting applications for a Research Assistant The position is offered for a period of 4 years. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is fulltime with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13). The sub-project “pictorial narration and visual representation of antiziganist motifs (1848-1930)” of the research group “Antiziganism and Ambivalence in Europe (1850-1950)” investigates the constitutive significance of visual antigypsyist stereotypes in figures, motifs and pictorial narratives for the formation of European modernity. Antigypsyist motifs from high and popular culture are to be indexed, catalogued, categorized and evaluated in their structural entirety for the first time in order to ensure coherent art-historical analyses on this basis. The sub-project is also responsible for setting up a multimodal database, i. e. the technical infrastructure of the research group, in which events, works and people are conected. This digital research environment is intended to enable the mapping and evaluation of antiziganist images, from paintings to advertisements, and to ensure a systematic link with the materials and discourses of the neighboring disciplines involved. Dear colleagues, Next Monday (18/11/24), the third session of the STAGE seminar will take place, featuring a presentation by Derek Miller, Professor of English at Harvard University: A Bird's-Eye View of US Theater Around 1900 Like so much cultural history, theater history tends to focus on outstanding performers, writers, or productions. But most theatrical practice is normal: there are typical ways to write, stage, produce, and attend a play. Quantitative methods of historical analysis make it easier to understand the norms of theatrical practice. In this presentation, I explore data from a set of guides to the late-nineteenth-century theater in the United States. I offer model analyses of (a) the number of theaters in the US from after the Civil War to WWI, as well as their seating capacities; (b) the geographic distribution and operation of the Theatrical Syndicate; and (c) theater electrification. Along with these examples, I will explain my procedures for working with this data. I consider both what these methods can teach us about these topics, and what issues come to light, but perhaps cannot be answered, through quantitative archives and analysis. Derek Miller is Professor of English at Harvard University, where he has taught theater history and dramatic literature since 2013. He has published extensively on the theater industries in the US and UK since the nineteenth century, primarily on law and performance, particularly copyright. Recent work includes an essay on digital methods in theater studies, a chapter about legal texts as performance texts, and an elegy for theater tickets. GPT, which stands for Generative Pretrained Transformer, is especially popular for text generation and is widely used in applications like ChatGPT. GenAI has taken the world by storm and revolutionized various industries, including healthcare, finance, and entertainment. However, GenAI models have several limitations, including biases from training data, generating factually incorrect information, and difficulty in understanding complex content. Additionally, their performance can vary based on domain specificity. In recent times, Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have attracted considerable attention for their ability to represent structured and interconnected information, and adopted by many companies in various domains. KGs represent knowledge by depicting relationships between entities, known as facts, usually based on formal ontological models. Consequently, they enable accuracy, decisiveness, interpretability, domain-specific knowledge, and evolving knowledge in various AI applications. The intersection between GenAI and KG has ignited significant interest and innovation in Natural Language Processing (NLP). For instance, by integrating LLMs with KGs during pre-training and inference, external knowledge can be incorporated for enhancing the model’s capabilities and improving interpretability. When integrated, they offer a robust approach to problem solving in diverse areas such as information enrichment, representation learning, conversational AI, cross-domain AI transfer, bias, content generation, and semantic understanding. Dear colleagues, The Digital Humanities Networkat the University of Potsdam invites you to another 'Code & Culture' online lecture on November 12. Our guest this time is Prof. John Dawson, who served as the Head of the Literary and Linguistic Computing Centre (LLCC) at theUniversity of Cambridge from 1974 to 2009. Title: Digital Humanities — an Ancient History Abstract: The Literary and LinguisticComputing Centre (LLCC) at the University of Cambridge was established in 1964 and had to devise innovative methods forinputting, storing, and analysing text of many types and in several alphabets. John Dawson was Head ofLLCC from 1974 to 2009. During that time, advancements in computer storage, software techniques, and printingtechnology revolutionised Digital Humanities, but they also posed many new challenges for humanists. Two examples: * In 1977 Chinese characters could only be drawn as simple line-drawings on a graph plotter, andthere was no established way to sort and print the mixture of Chinese and English required for a Chinese–Englishdictionary. * Concording the Poems and Plays of T. S. Eliot required a large amount of computer store,three magnetic tapes, and 45 minutes of computer time on a mainframe computer. The Concordance had to be sent onmagnetic tape to be printed on a Monotype typesetter at Oxford University. The talk will show howsome of these problems were overcome. Many of the techniques have been made redundant by modern technology, but lessonscan still be learnt. The talk will take place online on November at 16:00 CET.
