Dear colleagues, From March 31 to April 5,2025, we are holding a week-long text-focused DH Spring School <https://www.uni-potsdam.de/en/digital-humanities/activities/dh-potsdam-spri…> in Potsdam, Germany. The School is aimed at students and early-career scholars* who are beginning to explore DigitalHumanities (DH) and are interested in working with textual sources. Participation is free. The concept of the DH school While traditional hermeneutic approaches remaincrucial in the humanities, computational methods offer additional perspectives for textual analysis. The Spring Schoolaims to guide participants through the process of formulating a research question about a textual source to developing a comprehensive research project. The School provides anintroduction to several computational methods and offers an opportunity for the students to reflect on the prospects of applying those methods to their own research projects/interests. "Text as Data" features intensive discussions, workshops, and lectures tailored for students across allhumanities disciplines who are interested in computational approaches to text. Dear all, I'm looking to recruit a post-doctoral researcher in computer science or digital humanities to my ERC-funded project, which started in May 2024: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/a-foundation-for-em… The project develops novel methods and resources for studying multimodality, or how human communication naturally combines multiple 'modes' of expression. These methods and resources are used to develop empirically founded theories of multimodal communication in the domain of everyday cultural artefacts. The data studied in the project includes, for example, school textbooks, user-generated explanation videos on social media, news broadcasts, instruction manuals and online newspapers. This is a fixed-term position for 48 months, starting in January 2025 or as agreed, based in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland. The deadline for applications is October 21, 2024. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher is responsible for developing new methods for querying the multimodal corpora created in the project, which describe the structure of multimodal discourse using graphs that combine crowdsourced human insights and vector representations. IMC 2025: Call for contributions to a strand "Digital Approaches to Late Medieval Charters"

"Worlds of Learning" Through Digital Approaches to Late Medieval Charters The Department of Digital Humanities at the University of Graz, host of the European Research Council-funded project "From Digital to Distant Diplomatics" (DiDip), invites submissions for a series of sessions at the International Medieval Congress 2025, exploring the conference theme "Worlds of Learning" through innovative Digital Humanities approaches to late mediaeval charters (c. 1300-1500). Charters are "Worlds of Learning" - for contemporaries learning about legal activities and status, and for mediaeval studies scholars, sources of their own learning. Digital methods provide entirely new learnings: on the charters themselves and on the actors writing, using, and keeping charters. Our sessions aim to demonstrate how computational methods can fundamentally transform and expand our understanding of documentary practices and knowledge transmission across Europe. We welcome papers on the following topics: 1. Computer Vision and Medieval Charters: New Perspectives on Visual Learning * How can computer vision techniques reveal patterns in the visual aspects of charters across regions and time? * Applications of machine learning algorithms to identify and analyse layout, script styles, and graphical elements (seals, monograms) in large datasets of digitised charters. 2. Natural Language Processing and Charter Formulas: Tracing Textual Learning Networks * Computational analysis of charter texts using NLP techniques to uncover patterns in formulaic language, legal terminology, and scribal practices. * Exploration of networks of textual learning and the dissemination of documentary conventions across linguistic and cultural boundaries. 3. Data Visualisation and Medieval Charter Networks: Mapping Knowledge Circulation * Application of network analysis, GIS mapping, and other visualisation methods to represent relationships between chanceries, scribes, and document types. * New insights into the "worlds of learning" in charter production through data visualisation techniques. 4. Digital Methodologies and Medieval Charters: Innovative Approaches to Documentary Learning * How can digital editions enhance our understanding of charter creation, use, and preservation? What insights can database creation and management offer into the organisation and retrieval of mediaeval documentary knowledge? * Applications of XML/TEI encoding for semantic analysis of charter content and structure. * Exploration of linked data approaches to connect charter information across different collections and archives. Intermediality and Computational Humanities Hackathon, 14-15 Nov in Vienna

* sorry for cross-posting * Dear colleagues, The Digital Humanities Team at the University of Vienna and the Ottoman Nature in Travelogues (ONiT) project are pleased to announce a hackathon dedicated to exploring current challenges and solutions related to the analysis of texts, images, and multimodal sources. The hackathon is targeting scholars with backgrounds in Arts and Humanities as well as Computer Science with an interest in Computational Humanities methods. The aim of the hackathon is to bring together tool providers and art and history researchers to collaboratively focus on the analysis of digitised texts, images, or an inter-medial approach. The hackathon will be a two-day event starting on Thursday, November 14 at 9:00 CET and ending on Friday, November 15 at 15:00 CET. On the first day of the event, participants will be invited to propose topics and challenges related to the theme of the hackathon that they wish to work on. Working groups will then be formed from the participants to investigate these challenges. The working groups will be flexible, and participants will be welcome to work on multiple topics throughout the course of the event. With this in mind, participants are invited to suggest for potential topics and lines of enquiry in the registration form below. The hackathon will include two keynote lectures by Thomas Smits/Melvin Wevers and Matteo Valleriani. The international conference “Transmedia History”—organised by the Impresso project (https://impresso-project.ch/) and the University of Lausanne’s History Department (https://www.unil.ch/hist/home.html)—will gather scholars from various backgrounds around this question to exchange views on new prospects opened by digitisation and digital tools to carry out transmedia research. Media history is composed of a myriad of parallel histories, which makes comparisons difficult (Fickers 2018, 121). Research in the field has indeed long focused on single types of media (newspapers, television, radio, …) or single institutions within their national contexts. In the mid-2000s however, the transnational turn—which spread across all historical disciplines—allowed for new trends in research objectives to emerge (Bourdon 2008; Vallotton and Nicoli 2021). Research scopes overcame previous temporal and spatial frameworks and thereby became less driven by institutional perspectives than by contents and their circulation. Moreover, this new focus on transnational perspectives enlarged its scope to encompass a wider range of topics within media studies, such as technologies and communication. The development of the history of communication, cultural industries, techniques, and international relations all contributed to a form of décloisonnement or decompartmentalisation, that paved the way for a more comprehensive history of media systems (Mattelart 2002). These new approaches were made possible most notably by mass digitisation of media sources and the improvement of their online accessibility to researchers. International research networks gathered around such transnational ambitions. The first engaged with the history of the book (Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing - SHARP, https://sharpweb.org/) and the history of television (European Television History Network - ETHN, (Post)Socialist Television History Network), while, later on, other groups broached the radio (Transnational Radio Encounters - TRE, http://www.transnationalradio.org/) and the press (Transnational Network for the Study of the Press in Foreign Languages - Transfopress, https://www.chcsc.uvsq.fr/transfopress-transnational-network-for-the-study-… ). The transnational turn was a major breakthrough that resulted in important publications (see for example Mollier and Lyon 2012 for the book; Fickers and Johnson 2012 for the television; Badenoch, Fickers and Henrich-Franke 2013 for radio and a global history of French-speaking press which is currently in the making). It remains, however, that research in media history continues to face borders it has not managed to cross yet: beyond geographical borders, those between media institutions and between different types of media remain mostly uncrossed (Cronqvist and Hilgert 2017, 134). This challenge gave the impulse for the establishment of the Entangled Media Histories (EMHIS, https://emhis.blogg.lu.se/) network in 2013. In a milestone article published in 2017, Marie Cronqvist and Christoph Hilgert—both members of EMHIS—defined the concept of entangled histories “as a means of better understanding the dynamic interconnectedness of media across semiotic, technological, institutional and political boundaries in history” (Cronqvist et Hilgert 2017, 130). Rather than accumulating histories of different media, they advocated for a focus on the elements that bridge them. This idea has a certain genealogy (Müller 2000) and theoretical debates have also broached the matter. This perspective was indeed articulated in different ways depending on the historical subdiscipline (global history, history of communications, history of techniques, history of cultural industries that incorporate sociological methods, etc.) and the national and linguistic areas. Despite this, a lack of empirical studies persists, primarily due to the enduring division of knowledge and the practical challenges associated with navigating separate, multilingual archives. These factors discourage research that moves beyond compartmentalised, sector-specific approaches. With the exception of a handful of significant works (see most notably Daniel, de Lima Grecco, Tamagne and Zierenberg 2023), monomedia perspectives still dominate the field of media history and too little research is being carried out on exchanges and cooperation between media. This international conference aims to extend those efforts and reflections by inviting papers that prioritise a “transmedia” approach. We seek to present research that explores media history through the simultaneous analysis of different media, thereby emphasising the significance of the media ecosystems in which they co-evolve. A variety of terms have been used in fields like art history, narratology, journalism and communication to explore the interconnectedness of media (cross-media, intermedia, transmedia, etc.). With regards to history, it has occurred to us that “transmedia”—first used in narratology (Jenkins 2006)—was most suited to capture our ambition. We believe that it encompasses the study of various forms of circulation that occur between media (institutional, economic, technological, aesthetic, or content level). In this sense, we argue that “transmedia” refers with greater accuracy to our objective of transcending monomedia units. “Media” is understood in a broad sense here. It includes traditional media (books, posters, press, cinema, radio and television), but also recent ones such as video games, the Internet (e.g. streaming services, podcasts, online news) and social media. The targeted timeframe is extensive, spanning up to the present day. The conference ultimately seeks to present papers that contribute to a decompartmentalised and interconnected history of media. These papers will not only place media history within a broader social, political, and cultural context but also foster a dialogue among them. In this regard, we invite papers that fall within three main research axes: 1. Transmedia circulations, adaptations and reciprocal influences Media history, which was also strongly influenced by the cultural turn of the 1970s and 1980s, has gradually expanded the range of media objects studied and the actors involved (Ruppen Coutaz and Vallotton 2019). The concepts of cultural transfer (Spain and Werner 1988) and acculturation (Dulphy, Frank, Matard-Bonucci and Ory 2010) have proved useful in understanding the international circulation of media productions, which is now increasingly being studied (Mattelart 2014). Such approaches highlight the importance of mediators (Cooper-Richet, Mollier and Silem 2005; Sapiro 2012) and the creation of new transnational circulation spaces. The aim of this initial strand of research is to identify and analyse various factors that facilitate the circulation of content and formats across media and/or that foster interactions between media: * specific actors or media professions such as news and advertising agencies, foreign correspondents, exiles and diaspora representatives active in various media, translators, arrangers, cross-border media; * technological innovations like the telegraph, printing technologies, digital platforms or alternate reality games; * spaces of circulation and exchanges that transcend traditional political and/or linguistic boundaries, such as fictional serial productions, co-productions, joint-broadcasts, technical cooperation associations in the telecommunications field, foreign-language press; * socio-economic factors like concentration and financial globalisation, liberalisation and deregulation, convergence and new consumption habits. It will also involve considering the rhythms and temporality of information, the modes of circulation (e.g. scissors-and-paste journalism), adaptations and reconfigurations (e.g. comics to radio), as well as the transmission of practices and the mobility of people. Finally, it will be important to investigate resistance to these phenomena, in the sense of factors that hinder or trouble transmedia circulation (seasonal and geopolitical conditions, legal matters, censorship, etc.). 2. Intersections, reconfigurations and new media genealogies Traditionally, media history has viewed the advent of new distribution channels as significant ruptures per se marking the beginning of life cycles, each eventually bound to a certain downfall. Against this backdrop, new perspectives rooted in the new media history (Marvin 1990; Gitelman 2006) and media archaeology (Parikka 2012) provided counterpoints. Some have emphasised the relevance of synchronic approaches to study global transformations in the media system, as instanced by the “invention” of the telephone and, more broadly, by the evolution of images transmission. Others have put forth diachronic perspectives. In this vein, the notion of “live” transmission—which had been used to draw a line between television and cinema—provided an entry point for the exploration of media history through the lens of interdependence and competition. Likewise, analyses of “media imaginaries” (imaginaires médiatiques) acknowledged new periodisations that considered, for example, the presence of prophetic literary representations in communication or the recycling of media devices bound to disappear. The goal set by this second strand of research is to provide a refined understanding of how media define themselves in relation to each other. Additionally, it seeks to shine light upon their strategies and motives, in order to appreciate better the complex ties that they maintain (Lits 2005; Letourneux 2017). How was the advent of new media perceived, announced and narrated by existing media? How do media publicise, promote and criticise other media’s content? We aim to identify productions and documentary resources that reflect such intertwined relations, such as anticipation tales, criticism in the press, advertising productions, etc. From a broader viewpoint, these considerations also address the evolution of mentalities towards new media, their gradual integration within the media ecosystem, as well as the reconfigurations of the latter. 3. New approaches, resources and methods In what ways can the mass digitisation of archival collections and the advancement of computational analysis tools foster transmedia research? Computational research methods allow processing large volumes of data and in recent times also increasingly across languages and modalities (e.g. image, text, sound) (Arnold et al. 2021; Smits and Wevers 2023). Techniques such as text reuse detection (Salmi et al. 2020; Düring et al. 2023; Rosson et al. 2023) or the representation of textual elements in multilingual dense vector spaces (embeddings) (Reimers and Gurevych 2019) have been shown to serve large-scale comparisons and content exploration. But how exactly can computational approaches contribute to the advancement of a transmedia media history? The third axis of this conference aims to identify (new and/or digital approaches that facilitate and bolster comparisons. Besides, it seeks to discuss methods which enable analyses of the circulation of contents and formats at scale, in order to enhance our understanding of information fluxes (Lundell, Hannu et alii 2023). Until recently, most projects that embraced data-driven approaches focused on a single media, mostly the press (see for instance Viral Texts Project (https://viraltexts.org/) Oceanic Exchanges (https://oceanicexchanges.org/) Computational History and the Transformation of Public Discourse in Finland (COMHIS)(https://www.kansalliskirjasto.fi/en/projects/comhis-computational-history-and-transformation-public-discourse-finland-1640-1910 ) or Information Highways of the 19th Century (https://www.oru.se/english/research/research-projects/rp/?rdb=p2403) Research now starts to explore how to set up the processing—and how to conduct the analysis—of transmedia data; projects in the likes of TwiXL: An infrastructure for cross-media research on public debates (https://twi-xl.humanities.uva.nl/) Clariah Media Suite (https://mediasuite.clariah.nl/) and Impresso - Media Monitoring of the Past II (https://impresso-project.ch/) all welcomed this goal. We therefore look to understand the effects that the use of digital tools and methodologies has on the research practices of media historians (changes in scale, shifts between close and distant reading). More broadly, we want to question how the facilitated exploration of media sources affects the way we carry out historical research, especially in the field of media history (changing relation to sources, cross-fertilisation of research fields, emergence of new objects of study, new ways of presenting results, etc.). In doing so, we seek to assess the added value of digital tools for media history (Weber, Comte and Vallotton 2023). By embracing a transmedia approach, papers gathered for this conference will: * showcase shared, entangled histories, as well as differences and lesser-known relations and connections between media; * discuss the application of novel methods and tools to conduct historical research and ground a theoretical and empirical reflection on complex interactions between media; * enhance the global understanding of media ecosystem dynamics. This conference seeks to contribute to the clarification and development of a transmedia approach in the historical sciences. It aims to address transmedia from a historical, long-term perspective and, more broadly, to promote a decompartmentalised, entangled history of media. We therefore encourage presentations from junior and senior researchers who wish to share their empirical and methodological approaches in this field. PRACTICAL INFORMATIONS The conference will be held at the University of Lausanne. Remote participation (via Zoom) will be possible only if absolutely necessary and on explicit request. Working languages at the conference will be English and French. All speakers are kindly requested to prepare slides in the other language to accompany their talk. We strive to publish selected papers in the form of a special issue in a media history journal. If speakers' home institutions cannot cover travel and accommodation costs, partial or full support may be available depending on the number of requests. In the arts and humanities, the use of computational, statistical, and mathematical approaches has considerably increased in recent years. This research is characterized by the use of formal methods and the construction of explicit, computational models. This includes quantitative, statistical approaches, but also more generally computational methods for processing and analyzing data, as well as theoretical reflections on these approaches. Despite the undeniable growth of this research area, many scholars still struggle to find suitable research-oriented venues to present and publish computational work that does not lose sight of traditional modes of inquiry in the arts and humanities. This is the scholarly niche that the CHR conference aims to fill. More precisely, the conference aims at 1. Building a community of scholars working on humanities research questions relying on a wide range of computational and quantitative approaches to humanities data in all its forms. We consider this community to be complementary to the digital humanities landscape. 2. Promoting good practices through sharing “research stories”. Such good practices may include, for instance, the publication of code and data in order to support transparency and replication of studies; pre-registering research design to present theoretical justification, hypotheses, and proposed statistical analysis; or a redesign of the reviewing process for interdisciplinary studies that rely on computational approaches to answer questions relevant to the humanities. ### Topics of interest We invite original research papers from a wide range of topics, including -- but not limited to -- the following: - Applications of statistical methods and machine learning to process, enrich and analyse humanities data, including new media and cultural heritage data; - Hypothesis-driven humanities research, simulations and generative models; - Development of new quantitative and empirical methods for humanities research; - Modeling bias, uncertainty, and conflicting interpretation in the humanities; - Evaluation methods, evaluation data sets and development of standards; - Formal, statistical or quantitative evaluation of categorization / periodization; - Theoretical frameworks and epistemology for quantitative methods and computational humanities approaches; - Translation and transfer of methods from other disciplines, approaches to bridge humanistic and statistical interpretations; - Visualisation, dissemination (incl. Anne Frank scholarly edition now available in English

Dear colleagues, Some of you might be interested to hear that our TEI-based digital scholarly edition of Anne Frank's manuscripts is now also available in English. It includes her Diary, The Back House (the novel into which she set out to rewrite the diary), her collection of Tales, the unfinished novel Cady's Life and her Book of Beautiful Sentences (inspiring fragments that she copied from her reading). The edition provides extensive historical and textual commentary, context information and background essays. It can be accessed at https://annefrankmanuscripts.org/. Unfortunately, the copyright restrictions are the same as those for the Dutch edition we announced a few years ago. The edition is not accessible from most English-speaking countries, from the Netherlands, France and Spain and from quite a number of other countries. That's also the reason why we cannot publish the XML files. CLS INFRA Fully-funded TNA Fellowships - final call open now

Apologies for cross posting [A green and white sign with blue text Description automatically generated] Transnational Access Fellowship Programme (TNA) is now opening its final call for applications, evaluated on rolling deadlines. The CLS INFRA Fellowship Programme provides access to a wide range of data, tools and knowledge. Scholars from literary studies or with an interest in Computational Literary Studies methods are invited to apply for a fellowship grant in one of our infrastructure providers. Successful applicants will not only obtain free-of-charge physical access to the infrastructure, but in the context of the overall project they will become part of the larger CLS community. By responding to one of our calls, applicants may have the opportunity to: * Interact with experts; * Receive advice on ongoing projects; * Learn how to use the ecosystem of data, tools and standards; * Assemble new literary corpora; * Profit from hands-on training and support. * Fellowships grants will cover housing and subsistence costs as well as travel to and from the host institution. The CLS INFRA Fellowships are funded by the European Union under the rules of transnational access. CLS INFRA fellowship grants will typically cover travel and subsistence costs. Successful applicants are expected to join the chosen infrastructure for a period of 4 to 12 weeks. However, shorter residencies will be also taken into consideration. The last call will be structured on a rollling basis with the following deadlines: * first deadline for evaluation: July 29, 2024 (notification early-mid August) * second deadline for evaluation: September 9, 2024 (notification mid-end September) * third deadline for evaluation: October 21, 2024 (notification early November) * fourth deadline for evaluation: November 25, 2024 (notification early-mid December). The USC Mellon Humanities in a Digital World Program<https://dornsife.usc.edu/digitalhumanities/> and the Ahmanson Lab<https://polymathic.usc.edu/ahmanson-lab> of the Sidney Harman Academy for Polymathic Study in the USC Libraries invite applications for the second annual Immersive Technologies and Cultural Heritage (ITCH) Symposium. The symposium will take place on Friday, September 20, and Saturday, September 21, at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. We seek innovative projects rooted in the humanities or humanistic social sciences that rely on immersive technologies (including but not limited to augmented reality, mixed reality, virtual reality, photogrammetry or 3D modeling) to enable close engagement with cultural heritage materials, or open new possibilities for research, teaching, and learning. We particularly seek projects that realize the benefits of working at the intersection of digital technologies and the liberal arts. Participants will: * Pre-circulate materials related to their current project (such as a draft article, website, VR/AR experience, 3D model, or other format) two weeks prior to the symposium. * Give a 10-15-minute presentation summarizing their project’s context, goals, and implications for humanities scholarship at the symposium. * Lead a hands-on project demonstration and engage in conversation with users. * Offer comments on another participant’s pre-circulated project. * Participate in a concluding roundtable discussion of the promise and perils of immersive technologies for humanities research, teaching, and learning. Workshop discussions will foreground interdisciplinary elements and user experience in project development. This time it is dedicated to computational research of dialogues in film adaptations of literature, and also oftheir translations to other languages. The speakers are Agata Hołobut and Jan Rybicki, both from the Institute ofEnglish Studies at the Jagiellonian University. Title: With Pride, not Prejudice: on Dialogue in FilmAdaptations of Literature Abstract: The study of film adaptations of literature has gonethrough a variety of approaches from the early evaluative reviews of the 1950s through comparative analyses of the1970s to a more intertextual view of the phenomenon starting with the 1990s. Our research looks both into quantitativeand qualitative discussion of film dialogue and its translations and into the part that words play in film portrayalsof various historical eras. This is especially important in films that adapt (or translate) literature as much of theviewers’ expectations is based on their perception of the literary original; at the same time, modern perception of thenovels’ and films’ historical settings also come into play. Quantitative approaches allow a whole seriesof comparisons between the dialogues of novels and their film “translations” (and into translations of that dialogueinto other languages), from simple percentages of direct usage of dialogue (and narrative) to stylometric analyses ofword frequencies and other linguistic items. But quantitative analysis can also look at visual elements such ascharacter screen time or camera angle; this can then be compared between various adaptations of the same text andbetween the adaptations and the literary text in search for similarities and differences of perspective. We illustrate our research with examples from a variety of adaptations of literature, with particular focus on variousPride and Prejudice films (1940, 2005) and TV miniseries (1980, 1995). Based on selected scenes taken from the fourproductions we show how recycled, reworked and re-vamped fictionalised dialogue interacts with other elements of thefilm’s structure to create different interpretations of apparently identical literary characters. The central task of the candidate is to develop and populate an open-access online database for the project starting from the collected dataset in spreadsheet format. As part of the research unit based at the ISIG, the candidate will be responsible for the planned database of the ERC project HOLYLAB. The project studies the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, a thirteenth-century organisation funded to maintain the Holy Sepulchre and the friars’ presence in the Holy Land thanks to a complex system of alms gathering that involved worldwide branches called Commissariats. HOLYLAB investigates the Custody’s economic organisation through its account books for the period 1600 and 1800. One of the project’s main objectives is to offer free access to the data on money, costs, mobility, and consumption extracted from the accounting documents of Franciscan Commissariats. The candidate will work with the spreadsheet dataset collected by the research unit based at Roma Tre and from these develop the database through a DBMS and the Wordpress platform hosted on the Roma Tre servers. The candidate therefore will also use web publishing tools and coordinate with the IT Office of Roma Tre University. If possible, the candidate will produce visualisations from the database to be published on its website. We are pleased to announce that our keynote roundtable will be moderated by Aoibhie McCarthy, artistic director at Sample Studios, who will be in conversation with Valerie Byrne (Cork City Council), Melissa Terras (University of Edinburgh), and Francesca Farmer (Royal Albert Memorial Museum/University of Exeter). Dear European Digital Humanists, we extended the deadline for proposal submissions for the international conference *"European Cultural Memory in its Digitalization - Inventing Cultural Memory in the 21st Century?"* to *19.5.2024* The concept of cultural heritage has been in circulation for decades (e.g. UNESCO convention 1972) if not centuries (e.g. discussion on repatriation of artworks at the Congress of Vienna, 1815), in scientific, cultural and policy contexts. The extensive digitization of collections in archives, museums, and libraries, as well as the digital dissemination and mediation of cultural artefacts has also been framed as supporting the process of Europeanization. For instance, the mission of Europeana documents this interest in creating a European cultural identity (Capurro 2023). The very idea of a European heritage is embedded with the vision and policies of the European Union, fostering a shared European identity and memory on the grounds of a common culture and history as well as the rejection of the violent experiences of the 20th century (Radonic 2023). The conference “European Cultural Memory in its Digitalization” focuses on the intersection of cultural heritage, digital transformation and Europeanisation processes, also responding to the recent dynamic trends in Artificial Intelligence. It aims to question and problematize dimensions of cultural heritage from the European past in the context of contemporary social, cultural and technological transformations. It thus takes into account both the transformative (technological) and representational (discursive) potentials of digitalization of cultural heritage. This conference will discuss the European and national cultural and research policy strategies in the context of cultural heritage and its digital transformation in general and through the lens of specific projects engaging in this process. Furthermore, recent collaborations between digital humanities and cultural heritage organizations and researchers will be discussed. By contextualizing heritage in the European digital society agenda, general digital transformation processes, datafication and artificial intelligence developments, we will drive forward current debates in Digital Humanities and Memory Studies. The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers and scholars from various disciplines and reflect on the state of research in the field, opening up fresh discussions and dialogue. Dear all, We are happy to announce that the DH2024 pre-conference workshop “Computational Literary Studies: How To Do Research Responsibly” (co-organized by SIG-DLS and CLS-INFRA) will take place on Monday August 5th, 9:00am - 4:30pm. It will include two keynote talks by Amy Earnhart (on datasets collected responsibly) and Artjoms Šeļa (on statistical analysis conducted responsibly; the actual titles of the two keynote talks to be announced later) and a demo session on extracting information from large-scale collections of texts representing specific genres, e.g. ELTeC (prose) and DraCor (drama). The program will be concluded by a session of Lightning Talks in the afternoon. A light lunch (with vegetarian/vegan options available) will be offered by the organizers. You are all invited to join! Also, if you have an idea that falls under the topic of “Computational Literary Studies” and would like to discuss it with a pool of experts in the field, do not hesitate to send your proposal for a lightning talk! Dear DH-colleagues, (apologies for cross-posting) we (DH Potsdam) invite you to our next online 'Code & culture' lecture titled 'The cultural code of gender: from binary classes to a complex phenomenon of literary characterisation', by Prof. Dr. Mareike Schumacher (currently assistant professor for Digital Humanities at the University of Stuttgart). Here is the abstract for the talk: Can the two classes "male" and "female" – often understood as a binary either-or distinction – actually be modeled as basic units ("primitives") that can be arranged into complex codes designating all facets of gender in its multiplicity? In this talk, an analogy between the technical binary code and the cultural code of gender is used to test the hypothesis that gender can be seen as a discrete phenomenon constructed through varying combinations of male and female features. Additionally, it is brought into question whether "neutral" should be seen as a third basic unit and whether there might be more “gender primitives”. The presentation also includes a case study from Computational Literary Studies, in which several corpora consisting of literary texts in the German language are analyzed. In the study, gender roles such as ‘father’, ‘young girl’, or ‘person’ are classified according to basic gender units. Dear EADH list members, Please find below a Call for Papers for the second Web/Comics workshop, co-located with the Hypertext 2024 conference. ***Submission deadline 15 June 2024 **** Web/Comics 2024: Creativity in Small Spaces is the second in a new workshop series for the ACM Hypertext conference https://ht.acm.org/ht2024/. Web/Comics 2024 wants to investigate whether webcomics exemplify the expansion of hypertext beyond the linearity of information processing systems into a type of interactivity that is nonlinear (multicursal) and ludic. It uses webcomics to explore the boundaries of hypertext, for example by assessing its utility to the reader or user and its effects on “readers’ ongoing process of establishing meaning and coherence. At the same time, it asks how profoundly new tools such as text-to-image models and other forms of generative AI are altering comics production and consumption. The workshop will be held in conjunction with the Hypertext 2024 conference, 10-13 September, at the University of Poznań, Poland. The workshop will take place in a hybrid modality. While in-person attendance is preferred, we will allow remote presentations to maximize inclusivity. Umanistica Digitale goes rolling!

Dear colleagues I am pleased to announce that Umanistica Digitale (UD, https://umanisticadigitale.unibo.it/) the scientific journal of the AIUCD (http:www.asiucd.org), will become a rolling publication journal while maintaining its six-monthly periodicity. Accordingly, articles submitted by authors to the journal will be sent for processing immediately and published immediately after the end of the evaluation phase. Every six months, the issue will be closed in July and December, and the book reviews/project reports (that will not benefit from immediate publication for technical reasons) will be added. This model has the advantage of making the publication of scientific papers submitted to UD much faster and of streamlining the editorial workload for both the evaluation and the editorial part while keeping the formality required by many academic evaluation and funding agencies. We are convinced that in the domain of Digital Humanities, the timeliness with which a research product is made public and enters the scientific debate of the community is of utmost importance. In the near future, the editorial staff will assess the feasibility of further innovations such as open peer review. Let me remind you that UD publishes articles in Italian and English, is indexed on Scopus (https://www.scopus.com/sourceid/21101060465 Citescore 2023: 0.8) and is an A-level journal in many disciplinary areas for the Italian evaluation Agency ANVUR (mandatory for obtaining Italian professorship habilitation).
