We are specifically looking for persons who have recently obtained a doctorate in the broad field of computational humanities (digital humanities, computer science for the humanities, computer science or data science with a focus on applications in the humanities, etc.), or who are about to obtain one before the starting date. At least 50% of the workload will be dedicated to personal and collective research, and to carrying out a personal research project in the broad field of computational humanities, particularly in the theoretical, historical, methodological, and applied dimensions. A maximum of 50% of working hours will be devoted to supporting teaching tasks in the Computer Science for the Humanities and Digital Humanities programs, and to participating in and organizing the scientific activities of the department. CFP: Third Annual Immersive Technologies and Cultural Heritage (ITCH) Symposium

We invite proposals for the third annual Immersive Technologies and Cultural Heritage (ITCH) Symposium, jointly organized by the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences; the Ahmanson Lab of the Sidney Harman Academy for Polymathic Study in the USC Libraries; and the UCLA XR Initiative. The ITCH symposium will take place as a live, in-person event on Friday, November 14, at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. We seek innovative projects rooted in the humanities or humanistic social sciences that mobilize immersive technologies (including but not limited to augmented reality, mixed reality, virtual reality, photogrammetry, or 3D modeling) to enable close engagement with cultural heritage materials, or to open new possibilities for research, teaching, and learning with cultural heritage materials. We welcome work at any stage of development, with preference for projects that have at least completed a proof-of-concept, working prototype, or other early-stage exploratory development. We particularly seek projects working at the intersection of digital technologies and the liberal arts. In the interest of building a regional scholarly community, we will give priority to proposals from greater Southern California. Participants will: * Pre-circulate materials related to their current project two weeks prior to the symposium (e.g., a draft article, website, VR/AR experience, 3D model). * Give a 10-15-minute presentation summarizing their project’s context, goals, and implications for humanities scholarship at the symposium. * Offer comments, feedback, and questions on other participants’ projects. * Participate in a concluding roundtable discussion of the promise and perils of immersive technologies for humanities research, teaching, and learning. KCL DDH The Digital Conference • CALL FOR PAPERS Digital Humanities Today: Critical Inquiry with and about the Digital (23-26 June 2026) From the 23rd to 26th June 2026, the Department of Digital Humanities at King’s College London will host an international conference exploring the evolving role of Digital Humanities in a world increasingly shaped by digital technologies. Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Centre for Computing Humanities officially becoming a department of KCL, and 15th anniversary of being renamed as Department of Digital Humanities in 2011, we welcome scholars from around the world to critically reflect on what ‘digital’ entails in today’s world. Digital technologies have transformed the ways we live, work, create, and connect. From online grassroots movements to open-source tools, from digital archives to experimental art and music created with code, the digital has become a vital part of how we express ourselves, tell stories, and shape our futures. In our daily lives, the digital enables new forms of community and care, especially for those historically excluded from institutional or geographic centres of power. But these same technologies have also raised urgent questions. There is a growing concern across various disciplines and communities. Recent political, environmental and technological developments have shown that we cannot afford to treat “the digital” as neutral. It is shaped by geographies, specificities, regulatory environments, sociocultural contexts, and linguistic hierarchies, which condition how digital technologies are produced, used, and experienced across the globe. From the resurgence of extremist ideologies and algorithmic manipulation of public discourse, to the exploitative dynamics of platform economies and the environmental costs of large-scale computing, the digital now permeates nearly every aspect of our lives. Artificial intelligence is being used against workers, stealing their creative outputs and triggering a race to the bottom of working conditions. In addition to the socio-political impact of generative AI models, the deleterious environmental effects are also becoming increasingly clear. At the same time, computational and digital methods have enabled new forms of collaborative, interdisciplinary, and public-facing humanities research. They are reshaping not only our methodological choices but also how we conceptualise methods themselves—prompting us to revisit questions of reliability and reproducibility. These methods offer powerful tools for analysis, visualisation, preservation, and dissemination, while also enriching humanities scholarship by scaling up our analyses and opening up new avenues of inquiry. Unlike the underlying code, “the digital” is never binary. This is why, more than ever, we need to come together to discuss and debate its implications. There is a long tradition of critical research on digital methods and other issues concerning “the digital” at King’s, dating back to the early 1970s. The Department of Digital Humanities, established as the Centre for Computing in the Humanities in 1992, has been a key site for this work. Today it is home to a wide range of approaches to developing and applying digital methods in the humanities, as well as to interrogating the broader social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of the digital. Building on over fifty years of innovation and critical inquiry, this event invites scholars, practitioners, and communities to reflect on the role of Digital Humanities as both a methodological practice and a lens to understand and shape the digital world. We invite proposals that explore (but are not limited to) the following themes: * Computational humanities and computing culture: computational history, music computing, geoanalytics, digital classics, computational linguistics, computational social science, cultural analytics, computational literary studies * Creative digital practice and the arts, music and the digital, arts-based methods * Design, Interfaces, and Interaction: UX/UI * Digital ecologies, environmental justice and sustainable digital futures * Digital gaming and play * Digital health, digital care, and transformation of the care industry * Digital knowledge and epistemologies and critical technical practices and digital methods * Digital labour and economies, platform studies * Digital media * Digital Research Infrastructures and funding * Embodiment and identity: the digital and the embodied, digital childhood & youth * Global and decolonial digital cultures, digital commons, digital audiences, creator cultures * Politics, power, and resistance in the digital age: digital politics, deplatformisation, the digital university, engaged digital research We welcome contributions from across the humanities and beyond, from those who use and interrogate digital tools and those who develop them. We invite proposals for paper presentations (max. 15 mins) and panels (max. 4 x 15 mins) with a title and an abstract of no longer than 300 words, along with a short biography, no longer than 50 words. Please note: The conference will be face-to-face only, with career plenary sessions instead of keynotes (a panel consisting of academics from every stage). Novelty and relevance will be assessed by the community chairs (senior reviewers). The topic of this edition is the future of intelligence, a call to reflect on how Text Affects contribute to the development and expression of human and artificial intelligence. Intelligence (in text affects) This pathway explores the concept of intelligence—human and artificial—through its narrative, linguistic, and emotional dimensions. It also examines the interplay between humans and machines in text creation and reception, highlighting their collaborative potential and evolving dynamics. Aesthetics (in text affects) This pathway examines the transformation of aesthetics and cultural experiences in the digital age, including new forms of literature, such as interactive digital storytelling, art, like augmented reality installations, and interactive design seen in narrative-driven video games. It focuses on the aesthetics of digitalisation and curatorial practices, exploring how technology shapes human engagement and the ways cultural and artistic works are consumed. - Phenomenology and Digital Aesthetics a. The transition to born-digital texts and non-linear forms of art and literature b. Modelling user engagement as a facet of human experience c. Digital curatorial practices focusing on aesthetics and interactivity - Hypertext, Electronic Literature, and Games a. The role of hypertexts, digital fiction, and narrative-driven games in challenging or expanding our understanding of intelligence and creativity b. Documenting and analysing non-textual digital artefacts (e.g., tech-demoscene products, machinima) c. Exploring interactive design and game mechanics as models of intelligence and creativity - Cultural Heritage a. Associations between art and text and their role in democratising cultural appreciation b. New technologies supporting the integration of paintings, music, and poetry in digital collections c. Curating and preserving interactive and multimedia narratives 3. Benefits (in text affects) This pathway addresses the role of media and digital technologies in personal and social wellbeing. It also considers issues related to the preservation and accessibility of digital texts, such as ensuring equitable access and long-term cultural sustainability. In 2025, the King’s College London and University of Nottingham will launch the new Leverhulme Centre for Research on Slavery in War, funded by the Leverhulme Trust for up to £10 million over ten years. The Centre will be the first to systematically investigate the slavery–war nexus across history and into the future, using novel interdisciplinary methods that span the social sciences, humanities, and data sciences—including forecasting techniques, survivor narratives, and Earth Observation data. By reshaping knowledge and creating innovative tools and early warning systems, the Centre aims to support the global goal of eliminating forced labour, modern slavery, and human trafficking. You will bring information science and data management expertise into the new Leverhulme Centre for Research on Slavery in War. The new Centre for Research on Slavery in War is structured around four interconnected research strands—(Re)conceptualising, Understanding, Forecasting and Tackling—and aims for far-reaching insights that transform global responses to modern slavery in conflict settings. Coding Provenance: Workshop on Computational Provenance Research A Collaboration between Leuphana’s Provenance Lab and the Getty Provenance Index Leuphana University of Lüneburg, December 18–21, 2025 The Coding Provenance workshop marks the launch of an annual series devoted to training in computational techniques for provenance research. Bringing together scholars and practitioners from fields such as provenance studies, art history, history, material culture, and cultural/social anthropology, the workshop explores how computational methods and techniques can open new pathways for analyzing, interpreting, and rethinking provenance data. Over four days, participants will take part in a dynamic program that combines lectures, hands-on sessions, and open discussions. We will explore how artificial intelligence can assist with collecting, structuring, analyzing, and visualizing provenance data. Alongside technical training, the workshop provides a space for critical reflection on epistemological and methodological challenges that arise when digitizing archival information, applying data models, machine learning algorithms, and large-scale analysis to provenance research. This first edition will take place in person at Leuphana University of Lüneburg in Germany. It will include two preparatory online sessions to encourage early collaboration and tailor parts of the content to participants’ interests. The workshop is organized by the Provenance Lab at Leuphana University and the Getty Provenance Index at the Getty Research Institute. The project’s goal is to further develop this data regarding its potential applications for users, research questions, existing data infrastructures, and repositories, including the CCC portal (Collections from Colonial Contexts) of the German Digital Library. The sub-project is co-directed by Prof. Dr. Lynn Rother, Lichtenberg Professor for Provenance Studies and Director of the Provenance Lab at Leuphana University Lüneburg, and Dr. Claudia Andratschke, Coordinator of the Provenance Research Network in Lower Saxony, provenance researcher, and Head of the Collections and Research Department at Landesmuseum Hannover. Within the Science Space, PAESE data development is conducted in collaboration with two PhD positions: one at the Professorship of Computer Science with a focus on data analysis at Jade University of Applied Sciences Oldenburg (Prof. Dr. Sascha Koch), and another at the Professorship of Cartography and Geoinformatics at Leibniz University of Hanover (Prof. Dr. Monika Sester). The responsibilities of the two positions include: Data Development & Research: * Enrich and contextualize PAESE data, focusing on legacy information and implicit knowledge related to cultural attribution and geographic changes over time * Conduct requirement analysis for PAESE data development (addressing needs of scientific community, communities of origin, and other potential users) Project Coordination: * Provide scientific coordination of the sub-project (in consultation with sub-project leaders) * Coordinate collaborations with partners within and outside the Science Space * Manage and coordinate student assistants * Prepare schedules, budgets, reports, and other deliverables for the sub-project Outreach & Networking: * Conduct project-related public outreach through presentations at conferences and scientific publications * Develop best practice guidelines and science policy texts * Plan and execute project workshops * Network with national and international initiatives on colonial context collections (e.g., Colonial Provenances Working Group, Digitization Working Group of Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung, Network Colonial Contexts, NFDI4Culture) Your profile: We encourage applications from candidates with either a humanities background, an informatics background, or expertise in both areas. While we're proud of what Constellate accomplished in advancing computational literacy and text analysis skills, we concluded that we weren't achieving the broad-scale impact we had hoped for as a nonprofit organization. Dear colleagues, We're happy to announce the call for papers for the VIS4DH workshop co-located with the IEEE VIS Conference in Vienna, Austria! The VIS4DH workshop brings together researchers and practitioners from the fields of visualization and the humanities to discuss new research directions at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities research. This year, you can contribute to VIS4DH 2025 in two ways - you can submit to the workshop's Paper track, or you can submit to the Agora track, which calls for provocations, artworks, work in progress, or lab talks. Our call for submissions is open to all fields of the (digital) humanities and social sciences, and to all areas of visualization research and practice. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. While the workshop theme for VIS4DH'25 remains open to all submissions exploring the intersection of the humanities and visualization, we especially invite contributions related to the theme Visualizing Peace and Conflict as a response to the global increase of violence and armed conflict (see https://ucdp.uu.se/encyclopedia) At the same time, however, submissions do not need to focus explicitly on conflict between warring parties. We also encourage submissions related to ideological, civil, social, environmental, or epistemic conflicts and the potential for their resolution to address a broader theme/trend of intensified division worldwide. The topic aims to bring together researchers in international relations, peace & conflict resolution, sociology, anthropology, digital humanities, and visualization to present and discuss how research approaches in these areas can critically inform one another and contribute to new ways of studying conflict and its peaceful resolution. June 10: Prof. Dr. David Bamman (Berkeley): Measuring Representation and Linguistic Variation in Hollywood The lecture is public and can be attended in person and via zoom. David Bamman (Berkeley) Measuring Representation and Linguistic Variation in Hollywood Movies are a massively popular and influential form of media, but their computational study at scale has largely been limited due to the availability of data. In this talk, I'll discuss our efforts to build a collection of 2,307 films representing the top 50 movies by U.S. box office over the period 1980 to 2022, along with award nominees. Building this collection allows us to carry out several large-scale computational studies of film; I'll discuss our work measuring changing patterns in the representation of gender and race/ethnicity over the past 43 years (where we see an increase in diversity over the past decade) and in leveraging it to model variation in emotional performances and choice of adverbial intensifiers over both narrative and historical time. Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum (DHd2026) - Call for Papers

Dear colleagues, (German version below) I am very pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the DHd2026 conference today! DHd 2026, “Not Only Text, Not Only Data”, annual conference of the Association of Digital Humanities in German-speaking countries, organized by the University of Vienna. 23–27 February 2026. Submission deadline: 1 August 2025 https://dhd2026.digitalhumanities.de/ Both digitization of cultural heritage and abstract information modeling have, in recent years, significantly expanded the breadth of potential research in the humanities. The initial source of this expansion was primarily the creation of textual corpora and the development of algorithms and interfaces for text analysis. Over time, this has evolved to the point where it now includes the digital capture of virtually all "objects" within the humanities, and their attendant analytical interconnections: individuals, places, material culture, concepts, artworks, spoken interactions, and more. Yet despite the diversity of approaches, ideas, data, and methods in today’s digital humanities, focus often remains on more text-centred projects and data-focused results. We propose addressing the challenges posed by this expansion beyond text and data as the conference motto: not by excluding text-centered approaches but by placing them within a broader context. Disciplines such as art history, archaeology, and museum studies traditionally produce and analyze datasets related to material culture, including climate data, landscape profiles, and image matrices. They also produce analytical data, including human biological data such as genetics, and perception data, like eye-tracking, EEG, fMRT, and so on. However, this data is contextualized by informed integration with further information that completes a historical and contextual picture, necessitating varied data obtained through the analysis of diverse datasets. The conference aims to foster greater consideration of what diverse data means for scholars. Data creation is not the end but rather the very beginning of contemporary projects. Researchers in the digital humanities now frequently find themselves not only producing data but also conceiving of and developing algorithmic frameworks for their analyses, including the use of machine learning techniques recently mostly discussed under the label of Artificial Intelligence. Both the data itself and the approach taken are equally vital: data often lose much of their value when divorced from the methods used for both their creation and analysis. This aspect of knowledge production – the creation of methods and functions – has yet to receive sufficient attention in terms of their reuse and replication within the digital humanities. The lack of clear standards and best practices in this regard remain a fundamental challenge in digital humanities research. The same applies to preservation of interfaces and scripts of all kinds. Here too, it is essential to intensify cross-disciplinary dialogue. Code and algorithms each play a role that is as crucial for interdisciplinary dialogue with other fields of study (from computer science to social sciences) as academic prose. Other disciplines can only understand humanities data if they comprehend interpretations, which, in turn, depends on how they are processed. Hence, the development, preservation, and informed discussion of code are core components, if not prerequisites, for interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and cross-disciplinary engagement. The conference aims to create a productive space for encounters and discussions to explore these issues. Panels, presentations, workshops, and poster sessions will bring together experts from the fields of data science, digital cultural heritage research, and digital archival studies with representatives from the more text- and language-oriented digital humanities. We look forward to providing a venue for discussion and deliberation to foster discourse on code and algorithms, databases and archives, and text and data, and how these things positively push the boundaries of our research in the humanities. We invite contributions to interdisciplinary research that combines the humanities with computational methods and digital technologies, including but not limited to: Use of digital tools and resources to study humanities disciplines, including history, literature, art, and cultural studies Exploration of the impact of technology on humanities research and teaching Best practices around programming and software development in the humanities Reuse and adaptation of existing datasets and algorithms for new research directions Studies concerning the replicability of previously obtained research results Sustainability and preservation of both data and research processes; how does data stewardship engage with algorithms? Ausgangspunkt dafür war vor allem die Erstellung von Textkorpora, Entwicklung von Algorithmen und Interfaces für die Analyse von Texten. Nach und nach hat eine Erweiterung des Feldes stattgefunden, so dass inzwischen vermutlich sämtliche “Objekte” der Geisteswissenschaften digital erfasst und zunehmend miteinander analytisch verknüpft werden können: Personen, Orte, Objekte der materiellen Kultur, Begriffe, Kunstwerke, sprachliche Interaktionen etc. Wir schlagen vor, die Herausforderungen, die sich aus dieser Erweiterung über Text und Daten hinaus ergeben, als Motto der Konferenz aufzugreifen: nicht indem wir textzentrierte Ansätze ausschließen, sondern indem wir sie in einen breiteren Kontext stellen. Fächer wie Kunstgeschichte, Archäologie und Museumswissenschaft produzieren und analysieren traditionell Datenbestände aus dem Bereich der materiellen Kultur – Klimadaten, Landschaftsprofile oder Bildraster, aber auch materialanalytische Daten, bis hin zu humanbiologischen Daten (Genetik, aber auch solchen der Perzeption: Eye-Tracking, EEG, fMRT, etc.). Erst die informierte Zusammenschau mit hermeneutisch gewonnener Erkenntnis rundet ein aus Kontext erzeugtes historisches Bild ab, das zunehmend aus der Analyse unterschiedlich gearteter Datenbestände gewonnen wird. Datenerzeugung steht aber nicht am Ende, sondern vielmehr am Anfang zeitgemäßer Projekte. So finden sich digital arbeitende Geisteswissenschafter*innen immer häufiger in der Situation, nicht nur Daten zu produzieren, sondern auch ein adäquates algorithmisches Rahmenwerk für ihre Analyse zu konzipieren und zu entwickeln. Das schließt den Gebrauch von Techniken des maschinellen Lernens ein, die zuletzt meist unter dem Label der „Künstliche Intelligenz“ diskutiert wurden. Tatsächlich verlieren Daten oft viel an Wert, wenn die algorithmischen Methoden nicht gemeinsam mit ihnen aufbewahrt und gepflegt werden. Dieser Aspekt der Wissensproduktion in Form von Methoden und Funktionen hat bisher in den Digitalen Geisteswissenschaften nicht die nötige Aufmerksamkeit im Hinblick auf Nachnutzung und Replikation erhalten. Der Mangel an klaren Standards bzw. Best Practices stellt jedoch ein fundamentales Problem digitaler Forschung dar. Dasselbe gilt für Interfaces und Skripts jeder Art. Auch hier gilt es, den Dialog mit den einschlägigen Fachrichtungen zu intensivieren. Code und Algorithmen erfüllen eine Rolle, die nicht weniger wichtig für den transdisziplinären Dialog mit anderen Fachdisziplinen (von der Informatik bis zu den Sozialwissenschaften) ist als die wissenschaftliche Prosa: Solch andere Disziplinen können geisteswissenschaftliche Daten nur dann verstehen, wenn sie nachvollziehen, wie diese interpretiert werden, was wiederum davon abhängt, wie sie prozessiert werden. Insofern ist die Entwicklung, Erhaltung und informierte Diskussion von Code ein zentraler Bestandteil, wenn nicht eigentlich sogar Voraussetzung, transdisziplinärer Auseinandersetzung. Die Konferenz möchte einen Begegnungs- und Diskussionsraum zur Erörterung dieser Fragen eröffnen. Panels, Vorträge, Workshops und Poster-Sessions bringen Expert*innen aus den Datenwissenschaften, der digitalen Kulturerbeforschung und Archivwissenschaft zusammen mit Vertreter*innen der traditionellen, text- und sprachorientierten DH. Wir freuen uns darauf, einen Ort für Austausch und Reflexion zu schaffen, in dem über Code und Algorithmen, Datenbanken und Archive, Text und Daten nachgedacht wird – und darüber, wie diese Themen die Grenzen der geisteswissenschaftlichen Forschung im positiven Sinn verschieben können. The talk aims at taking a critical perspective, highlighting areas in which open science may actually also have negative impact. This will be discussed in two aspects of contemporary research: peer review and large language model use. Different forms of openness can be discussed for (open) peer review, such as the anonymity of reviewers/authors, or the publication of review texts. Training of large language models is not possible without a huge amount of text, and open data makes this substantially easier.
