Details also available at https://www.plottingpoetry.org/conference/2024einsiedeln/cfp Best, Petr --- *PLOTTING POETRY 7: Metres of Humour.* 26-27-28 June, 2024 Einsiedeln, Switzerland *Call for Papers* *Plotting Poetry* is a conference series focussed on computational, statistical and other quantitative approaches for the study of poetic texts, and of poeticity more broadly. This quantitative focus, this insistence on the formalization and operationalisation of texts, from simple pen and paper counting and compiling to complex algorithms, provides us with a number of paths to analyze, describe, interpret, attribute, classify, track and generally access the texts. The Plotting Poetry conferences bring together a friendly community of researchers, and articles rooted in the conference papers have given rise to several peer-reviewed collective volumes. The name of the group stems from an effort to translate a (perfectly serious) pun by the French modernist poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who in 1917 wrote that poets should “[machiner] poetry as has been done for the world”, where the verb *machiner* is visibly used for *mechanize*, although it really means *to plot*, as one would *plot* a coup. In this group, we are plotting against our own limitations by trying to plot literature on graphs, devising mechanized approaches to dissect the mechanics of poetry. This year’s conference welcomes a focus on the many forms of humour in verse. Although verse and humour might appear to sit at opposite ends of a literary hierarchy of taste and sophistication, the two have appeared together for as long as verse has been written, sung, played, shared or shouted. Versified humour can be found in popular productions and in highbrow literature, with poets writing lighter pieces alongside their other productions, as well as including humorous passages within their serious works. Both materials - humour and verse - rely on a departure from *bona fide* communication, seeking to harness the shortcomings of language, to create layered meanings and to trigger an additional effort from the recipient trying to make sense of incongruous or opaque utterances. Whilst ambiguity would be an enemy of efficient communication, it is a staple of both humour and poetry. Versification usually provides us with a reassuring sameness, and versified humour sometimes relies on this learned expectation of sameness, taking advantage of our prior knowledge in order to mislead us. This happens when an unexpected approximate rhyme brings to mind the obscene word that would provide a similar yet perfect rhyme. Or when the choice of a specific metre, with its baggage of associated uses and meanings, helps create parody or satire. Or even, very simply, when the stanzaic structure of a poem builds then breaks the monotony of lines, signaling the humorous intent of its punchline. In French, the punchline of a joke and the striking end of a poem are both named *la chute*: the fall. Verse has an ability to leave an impression on our minds and memories, and as such can readily serve persuasion efforts, from slogans or commercials to epic poems and state propaganda. Humour is often a deeply political reality. Despite its affinity with taboo subjects and irreverence, one of humour’s regular uses is to spread and maintain stereotypes, assert domination, and strengthen the feelings of belonging and allegiance through a so-called universality. This humour of the dominant tends to suppress minority voices and singular perspectives, requiring the dominated to laugh along in an effort to fit with the in-group. And yet, it can also be used as a weapon for attacking the order in place, voicing singularities, and questioning the established norms. Examining the powers of those two phenomena, one can wonder: What happens when a versified text is humorous, and what when a humorous text is in verse? Can shared regularities be found in the many verse forms of humorous texts? Can we measure those, and how? Should, or can, the funniness of it be taken into account, or even just its humorous intent, despite the high degree of cultural, linguistic and historical specificity? Papers addressing humour alongside verse or other highly-controlled and rhythmical forms are all welcome, whether written, read, sung or smuggled, from the lowest to the highest registers, from any time period and any language area. This focus on humour in verse is not an exclusive one, and we encourage the submission of papers that use quantitative tools and methods in investigating poetry or poeticity, regardless of their link to humorous poetry. Besides, as has been traditional at Plotting Poetry conferences, works on other genres may also be included, provided that a mechanization or quantification apparatus is being used to explore their poeticity. Some of the topics to consider include but are not limited to: - Verse forms and meters used and misused for lighter pieces - Stanzaic structures and their use in humour - Puns and their relationship to versification - Versification as a target of humour - Slogans and propaganda - Standup as poetry - Musical forms of humour (song, rap…) - … For this 7th Plotting Poetry conference, we will be convening in the Swiss village of Einsiedeln, in the canton of Schwyz. PhD Position 'Sound and Foreign Affairs from a Digital History Approach, 1700-1990', University of Amsterdam

The Amsterdam School of Historical Studies<https://ash.uva.nl/> (ASH) invites applications for a PhD position as part of the Faculty of Humanities starting grant “Sound and Foreign Affairs from a Digital History Approach, 1700-1990”, led by principal investigators Dr. H. Alloul and Dr. M.J.H.F. Wevers. This interdisciplinary project is situated at the crossroads of two fields. International History is broadly conceived and includes the study of diplomacy, interstate relations, conflict studies, and transnational encounters. Sonic History examines the significance of sound, noise, silence, or music within formal and informal spaces. The project seeks to harness the possibilities of digital methods to examine the reproduction, representation, reception, or the materiality of sound in foreign affairs. For further background, see the suggested reading list below. The PhD position, commencing on 1 February 2024, is fully funded and lasts 4 (1,0 fte) to 5 years (0,8 fte), depending on the candidate’s preference. The position includes coursework and limited teaching duties. What are you going to do? We are seeking to hire an enthusiastic PhD candidate with a strong methodological focus who wants to specialize in International History, taking sound as an object of study. Candidates can work on a project of their own choosing and are encouraged to think creatively in terms of research design. We invite interested candidates to prepare short pitches (details below) that could, for instance, examine: * listening practices, elucidating how sound was perceived and understood by historical actors with different backgrounds in various international settings; * how silence, noise, sonorous aspects, or sound technologies shaped diplomatic dialogues and debates, using sound design methods or speech-generation to reconstruct events; * how artists and their music participated to, or operated in transnational circuits, for instance using network analysis or GIS; * how sound, in its relation to foreign affairs, was historically depicted and recorded through various mediums, employing multimodal digital history techniques; * the physical and acoustic properties of spaces and their influence on international exchanges, relying on, for example, 3D-modelling. The chosen timeframe should fall within 1700-1990. There are no geographical restrictions, provided that candidates can read the relevant primary sources. Projects exploring non-Western perspectives are encouraged. Candidates without prior experience in digital methods should demonstrate a keenness to acquire these skills. The University of Amsterdam will provide the necessary training and guidance. Depending on the research project, potential primary sources – digitally accessible or easily digitizable – could consist of: * Sound and radio recordings; * (Printed) diplomatic documents; * (Un)published (and serialized) correspondence; * Newspaper and magazine archives; * Parliamentary proceedings and court records; * Visual sources (incl. photographs, paintings, etchings, drawings). Tasks and responsibilities: * submission of a PhD thesis within the period of appointment; * presenting intermediate research results at workshops and conferences; * participation in the Research School and Faculty of Humanities PhD training programmes; * teaching deployment at BA-level in the second or third year of the appointment, for a maximum of 0,2 fte per year. What do you have to offer? You are a motivated, creative thinker who is willing to explore uncharted territories of research. You can work independently while guided by your supervisors. You have good communication skills that will enable you to present your research clearly in papers, talks, and the final dissertation. Candidates should have: * a completed Master's degree in a field relevant to the proposed PhD project, e.g. History, Digital Humanities, International Relations, Anthropology, Media Studies, or Musicology. Alternatively, you may also apply if you have not yet completed your Master’s degree but can provide a signed letter from your supervisor stating that you will graduate before February 2024; * excellent research skills demonstrated by an outstanding Master's thesis and/or a track record of academic publications; * good command of English. We offer a temporary employment contract for the period of 48 months. The first contract will be for 16 months, with an extension for the following 32 months, contingent on a positive performance evaluation within the first 12 months. Without such digital support systems, it will no longer be possible to index, find, annotate, and curate the ever-growing number of digitally available resources for research data. Digital systems are also already in use for analyzing, indexing, enriching, and annotating multimedia data. But what about systems that support the analysis, annotation, and interpretation of digital research data - thus: representation of hermeneutic methods - and their results as well as supporting machine learning, reasoning, and finally automating the documentation of annotation, interpretation, and understanding? Research rarely begins with manual browsing in archives, but rather on the Internet. Extending the legacy of quantitative history pioneered by the Annales School, quantitative methods such as distant reading complement established methods such as close reading and discourse analysis, and are becoming increasingly important as digital collections grow. AI systems like ChatGPT create new opportunities and challenges regarding text production and source analysis. Digital literacy and algorithmic criticism are one way of responding to this shift. Both students and researchers need to be trained and sensitized to the new demands and possibilities of digital research practice. Digital tools and methods are being integrated into history education to provide students with a solid foundation for their future research activities. Research collaborations need to be rethought under the conditions of digitization, etc. Within this general context, a lot of questions need urgently to be discussed. What are the basic elements of data literacy which every historian should know about? What is algorithmic criticism and how can it be practiced in our every-day research routines? How do we manage the data we produce during the research process? Which criteria (if any) should we use to choose a software for a specific task? Where to find help when faced with a methodological or a computer problem – or a combination of both? How to set up interdisciplinary collaborations? How do we handle technologies that some of their inventors construct as ‹black boxes›? How can we deal with the rapidly increasing demand for very different resources (e.g. technical knowledge, computing power, money)? etc. The conference provides a platform for scholars, researchers and professionals of all ages and levels of experience to discuss these challenges, exchange experiences, share best practices, and discuss forward-looking approaches to historical research in the digital age. It aims to promote digital literacy, raise awareness of the use of algorithms and AI systems, develop strategies for dealing with digital sources, encourage shared formats and methodologies, and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices for collaborative historical research. The conference will also showcase projects and research in the field of digital history. It is planned that a selection of the papers presented at the conference will be published in a peer-reviewed open access publication. This is the first in a series of conferences that should take place every two years at a different Swiss university. *RIDE Call for Reviews: Crowd Editions* The Institute for Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE) is calling for reviews dedicated to crowd edited and peer sourced Digital Scholarly Editions (DSE). A publication of the reviews is planned in the online review journal for digital editions and resources RIDE under the topic “Crowd Edited Digital Scholarly Editions”. We are inviting reviews of such Digital Scholarly Editions from all Humanities disciplines. “Crowd edited” is understood in a broad sense: It describes a form of digitally enabled participation in the tasks that the creation and publication of a digital scholarly edition entail. It can imply that typical tasks, e.g., transcription, collation, annotation, (cross-)linking, or commentary, are “crowd sourced” or “peer sourced”, that means undertaken by a casual group of committed persons, through a publicly accessible platform. It can also imply that the edition is completely created by an independent public user group, e.g., on a social media platform (“social edition”). Call for Nominations: ADHO Roberto Busa Prize The Roberto Busa Prize is an award of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organisations (ADHO). It is named in honour of Father Roberto Busa, the first pioneer of humanities computing, who in 1949 began experiments in linguistic automation, with the support of the IBM offices in New York and Milan, as part of his analytical research on the writings of Thomas Aquinas. The computational work was central to the thirty years of research whose published output was the 56-volume Index Thomisticus, completed in 1980. The Busa award is given to recognise outstanding lifetime achievements in the application of information and communications technologies to humanities research. The award is given every three years, alternating with other ADHO awards, such as the Zampolli award. The first award was given to Father Busa himself in 1998. Subsequent winners have been John Burrows (2001) Susan Hockey (2004) Wilhelm Ott (2007) Joe Raben (2010) Willard McCarty (2013) and Helen Agüera (2016). While early discussions revolved around academic integrity, universities have begun to shift their attention to the role of generative AI in the research enterprise. Join us on Zoom! Our Open Space Day as part of the Digital Academy 2023: “From Uncertainty to Action: Advancing Research with Digital Data” - 28 September, 2023. The Digital Academy once again invites you to a vital exchange on data-based research and digital methods. This year, we will focus on an issue that affects the Digital Humanities on all levels: uncertainty. In this context, uncertainty is not understood as something deficient that inevitably makes data-based research within the digital humanities blurry. Instead, uncertainty underscores contingent opportunities to productively explore and develop strategies of dealing with digital research data. Three experts will report on their research projects and share their views on the topic of uncertainty in data-driven research. In an interview format, they will elaborate on topics spanning from modeling digital corpora and scholarly/scientific concepts, questions of accessing digital data in born-digital archives, to strategies of capturing uncertainty in scholarly editions. After each interview, there will be an open discussion with the Zoom audience. We invite scholars, researchers and professionals of all levels of experience from Switzerland and beyond to submit papers on the DHCH24 conference theme: ‹Historical Research, Digital Literacy and Algorithmic Criticism›. We are particularly interested in papers that address ongoing research projects, innovative research methods, the use of software in historical research, data analysis, and digital tools. Please visit our website for latest news and updates and to submit your abstract: https://bit.ly/dhch24 We are looking forward to your contributions! ——————— Call for Contributions Over the past few decades, history has gradually evolved into a discipline that is inconceivable without digital tools. Research rarely begins with manual browsing in archives, but rather on the Internet. Extending the legacy of quantitative history pioneered by the Annales School, quantitative methods such as distant reading complement established methods such as close reading and discourse analysis, and are becoming increasingly important as digital collections grow. AI systems like ChatGPT create new opportunities and challenges regarding text production and source analysis. Digital literacy and algorithmic criticism are one way of responding to this shift. Both students and researchers need to be trained and sensitized to the new demands and possibilities of digital research practice. Digital tools and methods are being integrated into history education to provide students with a solid foundation for their future research activities. Research collaborations need to be rethought under the conditions of digitization, etc. Within this general context, a lot of questions need urgently to be discussed. What are the basic elements of data literacy which every historian should know about? What is algorithmic criticism and how can it be practiced in our every-day research routines? How do we manage the data we produce during the research process? Which criteria (if any) should we use to choose a software for a specific task? Where to find help when faced with a methodological or a computer problem – or a combination of both? How to set up interdisciplinary collaborations? How do we handle technologies that some of their inventors construct as ‹black boxes›? How can we deal with the rapidly increasing demand for very different resources (e.g. technical knowledge, computing power, money)? etc. The conference provides a platform for scholars, researchers and professionals of all ages and levels of experience to discuss these challenges, exchange experiences, share best practices, and discuss forward-looking approaches to historical research in the digital age. It aims to promote digital literacy, raise awareness of the use of algorithms and AI systems, develop strategies for dealing with digital sources, encourage shared formats and methodologies, and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices for collaborative historical research. The conference will also showcase projects and research in the field of digital history. It is planned that a selection of the papers presented at the conference will be published in a peer-reviewed open access publication. This is the first in a series of conferences that should take place every two years at a different Swiss university. Call for Papers Papers should provide insightful analysis, provoke thoughtful discussion, and contribute to the understanding and advancement of digital literacy and algorithmic criticism in historical research. This is an excellent opportunity to share your work with a diverse audience, receive valuable feedback, contribute to the evolving discourse in the field of digital history, and build community. Call for Posters In addition to paper presentations, we also invite submissions for poster presentations.
