It may not be a face-to-face meeting of the participants and the fans but let us not cross that bridge yet. Stay tuned. = = = = = = = = = = = = LaTeCH-CLfL 2020 is the fourth joint meeting of two communities with overlapping research goals and a similar research focus. The SIGHUM Workshops on Language Technology for Cultural Heritage, Social Sciences, and Humanities (LaTeCH) have been a forum for researchers who develop new technologies for improved information access to data from the broadly understood humanities and social sciences. The ACL Workshops on Computational Linguistics for Literature (CLfL) have focussed on applications of NLP to a wide variety of literary data. The first three joint workshop (LaTeCH-CLfL 2017, 2018 and 2019) brought together people from both communities. We count on this workshop to broaden the scope of our work even further, and to encourage new common research initiatives. Topics and content In the Humanities, Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage and literary communities, there is increasing interest in, and demand for, NLP methods for semantic and structural annotation, intelligent linking, discovery, querying, cleaning and visualization of both primary and secondary data. This is even true of primarily non-textual collections, given that text is also the pervasive medium for metadata. Such applications pose new challenges for NLP research: noisy, non-standard textual or multi-modal input, historical languages, vague research concepts, multilingual parts within one document, and so no. Digital resources often have insufficient coverage; resource-intensive methods require (semi-)automatic processing tools and domain adaptation, or intense manual effort (e.g., annotation). Literary texts bring their own problems, because navigating this form of creative expression requires more than the typical information-seeking tools. Examples of advanced tasks include the study of literature of a certain period, author or sub-genre, recognition of certain literary devices, or quantitative analysis of poetry. NLP methods applied in this context not only need to achieve high performance, but are often applied as a first step in research or scholarly workflow. That is why it is crucial to interpret model results properly; model interpretability might be more important than raw performance scores, depending on the context. More generally, there is a growing interest in computational models whose results can be used or interpreted in meaningful ways. It is, therefore, of mutual benefit that NLP experts, data specialists and Digital Humanities researchers who work in and across their domains get involved in the Computational Linguistics community and present their fundamental or applied research results. It has already been demonstrated how cross-disciplinary exchange not only supports work in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Cultural Heritage communities but also promotes work in the Computational Linguistics community to build richer and more effective tools and models. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: • adaptation of NLP tools to Cultural Heritage, Social Sciences, Humanities and literature; • automatic error detection and cleaning of textual data; • complex annotation schemas, tools and interfaces; • creation (fully- or semi-automatic) of semantic resources; • creation and analysis of social networks of literary characters; • discourse and narrative analysis/modelling, notably in literature; • emotion analysis for the humanities and for literature; • generation of literary narrative, dialogue or poetry; • identification and analysis of literary genres; • linking and retrieving information from different sources, media, and domains; • modelling dialogue literary style for generation; • modelling of information and knowledge in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Cultural Heritage; • profiling and authorship attribution; • search for scientific and/or scholarly literature; • work with linguistic variation and non-standard or historical use of language. Invited speaker The workshop will feature an invited talk, as usual. The speaker will be Professor Elke Teich. We expect, optimistically enough, that it will be an actual talk but it just may have to assume a remote guise... Information for authors We invite papers on original, unpublished work in the topic areas of the workshop. In addition to long papers, we will consider short papers and system descriptions (demos). We also welcome position papers. • Long papers, presenting completed work, may consist of up to eight (8) pages of content plus additional pages of references; final camera-ready versions of accepted long papers will be given one additional page of content (up to 9 pages) so that reviewers’ comments can be taken into account. • A short paper / demo can present work in progress, or the description of a system, and may consist of up to four (4) pages of content plus additional pages of references. Upon acceptance, short papers will be given five (5) content pages in the proceedings. • A position paper — clearly marked as such — should not exceed six (6) pages including references. All submissions must adhere to the COLING stylesheets (for LaTeX and MS Word) posted at https://coling2020.org/coling2020.zip. Papers should be submitted electronically, in PDF, at https://www.softconf.com/coling2020/LaTeCH-CLfL/. Reviewing will be double-blind. Please do not include the authors’ names and affiliations, or any references to Web sites, project names, acknowledgements and so on — anything that immediately reveals the authors’ identity. Self-references should be kept to a reasonable minimum, and anonymous citations cannot be used. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings, and later available in the ACL Anthology. Summa contra Gentiles treebank now complete

The result of almost ten years’ worth of manual work, the Summa contra Gentiles brings the total number of annotated nodes in the Index Thomisticus Treebank to 460,000, corresponding to over 26,000 sentences. On behalf of Silvie Cinková: Dear colleagues, I apologize for unsolicited e-mail, but I will anyway hazard a question to you: how important is placing your publications in venues indexed in WoS/Scopus, actually? Would you like the major Digital Humanities conferences to publish all accepted papers in indexed proceedings or in a special issue of a well-indexed journal, say, Digital Scholarship in the Humanities? Do your grant providers or employers care? This has been a burning issue for me, since my national research evaluation system (Czechia) hardly considers other type of publications, in particular conference papers. This means that I cannot even report papers from the two major DH (ADHO, EADH) conferences as grant outputs anywhere. Is it a country- or discipline-specific problem, or a common one, so that it would deserve being raised with the conference organizers? Uppsala University is hiring a Senior lecturer in Digital Humanities

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 46.000 students, 7.300 employees and a turnover of SEK 7.3 billion. In case of different interpretations of the English and Swedish versions of this announcement, the Swedish version takes precedence. The Department of ALM (Archival, Library & Information and Museum & Cultural Heritage Studies) offers the Master’s Programme in Archives, Library and Museum Studies (archival studies, library & information studies, and museum & cultural heritage studies) and the Master’s Programme in Digital Humanities (DH). Doctoral studies in information studies are also offered. The department currently has around 20 teachers and researchers and six doctoral students. The Faculty of Arts has appointed the Department of ALM to host the development of the digital humanities as a new field for interfaculty and interdisciplinary collaboration within research, education and infrastructure at Uppsala University. This initiative is currently in an expansive phase that includes a planned centre of expertise and research for research collaboration and infrastructure support within DH. The senior lectureship is linked to this initiative. Duties: The position includes research, teaching and examination primarily within the Master’s Programme in DH, but there will also be teaching and examination in the Master’s Programme in ALM. The teaching in the position entails a capability to elaborate on broad and inclusive perspectives on digital humanities in a manner that is theoretically profound and practice-oriented. Moreover, a capability to provide an in-depth understanding for and knowledge of how digital methods, digital source materials and digital research infrastructures impact knowledge production in the humanities, the operations of different cultural heritage institutions, and the applicability of humanities competences in working life. Duties include planning and implementing an integration of mutually relevant courses and course modules between the ALM and Digital Humanities master’s programmes. Teaching duties includes leading, planning, course responsibility, course administration and supervision. Supervision of doctoral students in information studies may also be included. Management duties may also be included. The duties in the position also include following developments in research within digital humanities, archival studies, library & information studies and museum & cultural heritage studies and society in general that have importance for work at the University and conducting both campus-based teaching and distance teaching online. Duties include collaboration with researchers specialised in the digital humanities both at Uppsala University and at other higher education institutions. Teaching is primarily in English but teaching in Swedish may occur. Applicants who do not speak Swedish are expected to learn Swedish as a work and teaching language within two years. Eligibility requirements: To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, applicants must have a doctoral degree in a social science or humanities discipline with direct relevance to the duties of the position, demonstrate educational expertise and have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the position well. Eligible applicants to a senior lectureship are to have relevant teaching experience from higher education. The applicant’s educational expertise, the scholarly expertise and the professional expertise must be relevant for the position’s subject content and duties. For educational expertise to be considered adequate, the applicant is to have had at least 10 weeks of training in teaching in higher education that is relevant for the field, or equivalent knowledge. In case of special circumstances, the training in teaching in higher education can be completed during the first two years of employment. Eligibility requires documented ability to teach in English. Assessment criteria: When selecting among eligible applicants, equal weight is given to both scholarly and educational expertise. Scholarly expertise: When assessing scholarly expertise, scholarly quality is the primary consideration. The scope of the research, particularly its depth and breadth, is also prioritised. The ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at the doctoral level, and demonstrated ability to conduct community outreach are considered important. Documented experience of applying for and receiving competitive research funding and demonstrated ability to cooperate on research is a desirable merit. Teaching expertise: When assessing teaching expertise, primary emphasis is on teaching quality. Teaching expertise is to be well documented. The scope of teaching expertise, both breadth and depth, are also considered. The ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, to supervise and conduct examinations on all levels, and to link teaching to research are given significance. Teaching expertise includes the ability to interact with actors within and outside of Uppsala University relating to teaching in higher education. Documented experience of teaching in Swedish is a merit. Equal care is devoted to assessing teaching expertise as to assessing scholarly expertise. It should be noted that the holder of the senior lectureship will have opportunities to participate in developing and influencing how DH is formulated at Uppsala University. Previous documented experience of multidisciplinary humanities research, teaching, and leading research within the field of digital humanities is therefore a merit. Documented experience of teaching, research and publications within the ALM disciplines, i.e. archival studies, library & information studies and museum & cultural heritage studies, is considered an advantage. Assessment criteria; other skills: Administrative expertise and management expertise are important for the position and are given significant weight. Administrative expertise can be demonstrated through ability to plan, organise and prioritise work effectively, to adapt work for the intended purpose, and to define and maintain time frames. The expertise includes overall organisational planning, the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects the organisation’s priorities and the ability to work in a structured way and with an awareness of goals and quality. Management expertise is demonstrated through the ability to lead organisations and staff, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate and provide others with the conditions required to effectively achieve mutual goals. The ability to coordinate groups, to encourage commitment, inclusion and job satisfaction, and to manage conflicts are additional examples of demonstrated expertise. The ability to conduct outreach with the community and to share information about research and development will be considered. The ability to provide information about research and development is demonstrated through popular science activities, such as participating in informational activities, publishing popular science texts and participating in public debates on educational and research issues. Documented good collaborative skills are given particular weight. When hiring a new teacher, Uppsala University conducts a qualitative overall assessment of expertise and skills and choses the applicant judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to contribute to the positive development of the organisation. LiLa-Linking Latin: Lemma Bank available

**With apologies for cross-posting** We are glad to announce that the LEMMA BANK QUERY INTERFACE of the "LiLa: Linking Latin" ERC project is now online at: https://lila-erc.eu/query/ Users can query the LiLa collection of Latin lemmas, used to interconnect linguistic resources and tools with Linked Data technology, through a simple graphical interface. The Lemma Bank comprises 134,228 Lemma objects and 58,278 Hypolemma objects, as well as 4,224 lexical bases, 109 suffixes and 41 prefixes. Query results can be saved as a CSV file, visualized in the LOD View or LOD Live interfaces, and the underlying SPARQL code can be copied with a simple click. Users familiar with the SPARQL query language can also access the LiLa triplestore, which currently provides three end-points: Lemma Bank, Corpora ("Summa contra Gentiles" of the "Index Thomisticus Treebank") and lexicalResources (the "Brill Etymological Dictionary of Latin and the other Italic Languages"). International conference, Turin-Vercelli (19-20 October 2020) CALL FOR CONTRIBUTION [For further inquiries please contact: cicerodigitalis(a)gmail.com] The Société Internationale des Amis de Cicéron (SIAC), with support from the departments of Studi Umanistici of Università di Torino and Università del Piemonte Orientale et l’ERIAC (Équipe de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur les Aires Culturelles – Université de Rouen-Normandie), calls for contributions (papers and/or posters) addressing various topics related to Cicero and Roman thought in digital perspectives. The range of proposals includes, but is not limited to, • ideas for research projects (ongoing or completed) conducted via digital methods or tools • digital-oriented didactic strategies • digital editions • thoughts on how the use of digital methods or tools may impact the study of Cicero and Roman thought Abstracts must be limited to 500 words (bibliography excluded) and may be written in Italian, French, English, German, or Spanish. Contributors are invited to specify whether their proposal is designed as a paper or poster and, if a paper, whether they would be willing to make it a poster if necessary. By way of generic instruction, posters are better suited for a work in progress, whereas papers are the preferred format of a more accomplished project. Survey for Digital Humanities Professionals and Humanities Researchers Working with Natural Science Collections

We are conducting a survey to inform the implementation of the Distributed System of Scientific Collections (DiSSCo) research infrastructure. DiSSCo is a pan-European effort to digitally unify all European natural science assets under common curation and access. We *want to identify potential synergies between natural science and cultural heritage collections *and need an in-depth perspective of what the shared resources and potential synergies are and who the beneficiaries might be. We therefore request input from specialists working at the interface of humanities and natural science. We are interested primarily in what resources you would use and how you might use them (use cases), and the added benefit you would obtain. May we count on your participation? Especially Language Technology plays a major role either for processing the metadata of recorded objects or for analyzing and interpreting content. Applying Language Technology methods to objects from humanities in general and historical archives in particular, is a challenge for NLP-related research: data is heterogeneous (image /text), often incomplete (e.g. OCR errors), multilingual within one document (historic documents with Latin or/and classical Greek paragraphs) and difficult to structure (paragraphs, titles, pages are somewhat different in historical texts). Corpus-based methods, nowadays standard in NLP research, often cannot be applied as the necessary large training data is missing. Moreover, requirements for tools in Digital Humanities, especially tools dedicated to cultural heritage objects, are different from the ones applied to modern texts. Thus, performing research in Digital Humanities involves also: adapting existent NLP tools to the historical variants of languages; developing tools for new languages; making tools robust to syntactic deviation; and adapting semantic resources. Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Middle East and North Africa were always characterized by a high concentration of languages and cultures, interacting with each other. On a relatively small area texts written with at least 10 alphabets (Arabic, Hebrew, Armenian, Georgian, Greek, Cyrillic, Geez, Syriac and Latin, Coptic) can be found. On the other hand, information within these texts is important beyond the borders of a given language or script. (e.g. often documents in Ge'ez are translations of lost Coptic or ancient Greek texts). Places, Persons, Events have language-dependent denominations but refer to the same individual or geographical location. Unfortunately, especially in this area many historical documents are in bad condition; many languages or dialects became extinct over the time and their written evidence is rare. Digital methods seem the perfect means for preservation and investigation of this rich cultural heritage asset. However, up to now, concentrated activities seem to be absent, probably also due to the lack of adequate NLP resources and tools. Thus, it is very necessary to evaluate existent technology, monitor current activities, network research teams in this area - all aims of this workshop This is the second edition of Language technology for Digital Humanities in Central and (South-)Eastern Europe workshop, held in 2017 at RANLP. In the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages this edition expands also to Middle East and North Africa. Topics Corpora of diachronic variants and language dialects, NLP Tools for processing historical documents, Intelligent search in digital archives, (Semi-) Automatic (meta)Annotation of historical texts, Treating uncertain and vague information from historical documents, Ontologies for historical texts, Evaluation of current frameworks (CLARIN, DARIAH) on DH-objects related to historical texts; Machine learning approaches for under-resourced DH objects, Methods for dealing with incomplete specified objects (e.g. partially known features or values), Automatic extraction of metadata, Metadata Interoperability for digital objects Intelligent search in digital historical archives Geo- and Time References in historical documents focusing on languages from the above mentioned area. Double submission is allowed, but authors will be asked to declare it at the time of submission. Long papers should be 8 pages long plus 2 extra pages for references.
