1st Shared Task on Scene Segmentation in German Narratives We invite contributions to the 1st Shared Task on automatic Scene Segmentation (STSS) for German narrative texts. Scenes are time-, location- and plot-wise coherent units of a story, and can predominantly be found in narrative texts like novels or biographies. Scene segmentation is needed for a high-level content analysis of longer texts, but also for many subsequent tasks for NLP applied in longer narrative texts, since even modern methods struggle with processing text longer than a couple of sentences or paragraphs. Day of DH 2021 - April 29 - Save the date!

Day of DH is a way to show how digital humanities happens in many different ways and is practised by a varied group of people. This Day of DH comes after a year of living in the virtual space and for that, it is more special. We have had a year of seeing human life and technology intersect intimately and seen its affordances and its limitations come to the fore virtual meeting after virtual meeting. So #dayofdh2021 provides us with an opportunity to share and reflect upon how a global pandemic changed DH, its directions, your research questions, and more. *The day of DH 2021 will take place on April 29.* This year the organizing committee is led by Loyola University Chicago and UCLA in the USA, the University of Guelph in Canada, and Università del Piemonte Orientale in Italy. Day of DH 2021 theme is MULTILINGUAL DH. However, they are under-represented in language technology and semantic web research. In this workshop, two recently awarded H2020 projects, Odeuropa and Polifonia, are teaming up to advance our understanding of how smells and music are represented in texts and structured data. The topics we want to address revolve around extracting references to smells, music, context, and visual information from text as well as relevant data describing their cultural, historical and political context, and model them in the form of interlinked knowledge graphs. This research has a strong interdisciplinary character, hence the workshop has the potential to attract researchers from diverse disciplines from both social sciences and humanities and computer science. Its potential impact is significant to many application areas including: preservation and valorisation of cultural heritage, data-driven policy making in cultural heritage, urban planning, artistic performances, applications for scholars in musicology and history, applications for museums, innovation in teaching, maintenance and exploitation of large catalogues, archives and libraries. We aim at creating a reference venue where new ideas and results can be shared and lead the way towards a technological and cultural shift in how we understand and experience our cultural heritage. 11th EUROPEAN SUMMER UNIVERSITY IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES "CULTURE & TECHNOLOGY" - 3rd to 13th of August 2021 UNIVERSITY OF LEIPZIG As some may remember the 11th European Summer University in Digital Humanities “Culture & Technology” to be held last summer in Leipzig had to be postponed to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is to inform you that given that the DAAD has agreed to support the European Summer University again for two years, we have decided to hold ESU DH 2021 from the 3rd to 13th of August 2021 in Leipzig as promised. It will be organised together with the Forum Digital Humanities Leipzig[1] (FDHL). Although we are aware that the pandemic may hold still many challenges in store for us all, we are planning to meet with everybody in person in Leipzig. Should this not be possible we will put a plan B in place which could either mean having a hybrid event or, if the worst comes to the worst, a fully virtual one. We will just have to see what the next months bring. As in former years the Summer University is supposed to take place across 11 whole days. The intensive programme should consist of workshops, teaser sessions, public lectures, regular project presentations, a poster session and a panel discussion. At the moment a new ConfTool is being installed. All users of ESU’s 2020 ConfTool[2] as well as all the application documents submitted there in 2020 will be transferred to the new installation. As soon as the new installation is ready and we have updated ESU’s website[3] with information about the workshops which will be offered, we will come back with more information. How should a DH Association for the UK and Ireland carry out advocacy? How can we ensure that any Association that emerges has both the authority and representation to speak on behalf of DH communities of practice? What are the entities that need expert input from the DH community, and how can the Association ensure that it informs and shapes policy and other decision making processes? The aim of this workshop is to discuss the policy areas in which DH interests need to be heard, and discuss some shared, strategic challenges where a united voice of those working in DH is needed. The workshop will explore the key issues that affect DH development in the UK and Ireland that have policy implications, areas where expert opinions and guidance may be needed, and the audiences for these views. We will focus on three key areas where advocacy is needed in DH: Research, teaching, and infrastructure. In research, these issues include the way that DH tools, methods, and outputs are assessed for national research assessment exercises and peer review of digital content, tools, methods and research outputs, and the impact of open access publishing on DH research outputs. For teaching, central issues have emerged around shared curricula and teaching assessment, especially the lessons learned from recent experimentation with online course delivery. In terms of infrastructure development, what are areas for investment that will impact the development and uptake of DH? And what can we do to effect engagement with those shaping policy regarding key infrastructure investment? Is there a need for a shared view? How can we advocate for DH, and to whom? How best can we facilitate international cooperation and collaboration: in the UK’s post-Brexit landscape, how can we stay connected despite the loss of schemes like Erasmus? How can we ensure continued UK DH involvement in H2020? And structurally, what model of DH Association in the UK and Ireland would underpin an advocacy agenda? We begin with this message after 200 days of silence and a great amount of cooperative work between Cologne and London to accomplish its migration to Universitt zu Kln. Thanks are due to all those involved, without whom the undesirable would be a fact. But it isn't, and I am grateful. Allow me first some housekeeping. Then other messages will follow. So, two matters for your attention. (1) Where it is. From now on Humanist lives at the same web address as before, dhhumanist.org, which is the only one you should use for it. The web system is likely to be moved to another server in the future, in which case <dhhumanist.org> will continue to work, whereas a server-based address will stop working. (2) How it goes. Humanist now has an editorial policy and an Editorial Board, for which see the About page (https://dhhumanist.org/announcement.html) The policy, worked out with the help of the Board, is as brief as I could get it and as close as I could make it to Humanist's de facto practices over the last three decades. My preference was to leave the policy implicit, but I've concluded that Humanist must have an explicit one and that it has to be spelled out for all to see. The Editorial Board is intended to function in much the same way as for journals, to provide the Editor with colleagues on whom to rely, and by its membership to signify the reach of Humanist in several dimensions. The Board also marks a transition that was accomplished years ago: from a clearing house of information to a form of scholarly publication. Now for the good stuff. We have a question for the DH community: what are the most sought after computational resources that, if made available, will greatly facilitate and accelerate your research? We would like to understand what are a) the code libraries you dream of using, b) the shared tasks you think are urgently needed. BUT HOW SHOULD WE TEACH DATA LITERACY IN THE HUMANITIES? The Digital Humanities are characterized by a cross-disciplinary and collaborative nature, by project orientation, hands-on practices and the use of cultural heritage data, and by the aim to integrate and create domain-specific knowledge with computational methods and tools while reflecting their application and use critically. As such Digital Humanities would seem to offer everything that students need to become not only literate in their specific Humanities field, but to acquire at the same time data literacy and skills like problem solving, computational and critical thinking. As the data which play a role in Digital Humanities are themselves multiform and comprise among other types visual, audio, geospatial, temporal, and statistical data, we can even say that by studying Digital Humanities students become meta- or transliterate and thus able to employ their knowledge, competencies and skills in very diverse social and professional domains. In order to support the claim that doing Digital Humanities involves becoming (meta- / trans-) data literate and to illustrate the acquisition of data literacy in diverse Humanities-specific courses offered at different levels of university education, we have brought together an international group of specialists. Survey - What is your experience of Google Arts and Culture? - new study

Dear EADH folks, (Apologies for cross posting, and I hope this is of interest to the list, given many of you work in/with the GLAM sector). Google Arts and Culture (GA&C) is now a major portal through which users can experience artworks and cultural artifacts from over 2000 galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM), from over 80 countries, worldwide. While the portal attracts large audiences, there has been next-to-no published research on the GLAM sector experience of GA&C. What is attractive about the platform to institutions? What benefits does it provide to the partner organisation? What was the experience of preparing and submitting material to GA&C? What issues are there regarding labour, permissions, copyright, and sustainability? What lasting effects will it have on the sector? We’re undertaking a study regarding the GLAM sector’s experience of GA&C, and perceptions of GA&C. We’re looking for those working within the sector to provide their anonymous opinion. We are asking for anonymous responses to give anyone in the GLAM sector freedom to comment. The survey will close on 15th Feb 2021. This lecture takes place within the context of the lecture series: DIGITAL HUMANITIES – THEORIE UND METHODIK “DATA LITERACY AND DIGITAL HUMANITIES” The digital universe is growing very fast and the amount of information contained in data is exploding. The mining of these data has ethical, social, and political consequences. In order to think through these consequences a new kind of literacy is needed, which could also be called ‘data literacy’ if we define it according to Chantel Ridsdale as “the ability to collect, manage, evaluate, and apply data in a critical manner”. BUT HOW SHOULD WE TEACH DATA LITERACY IN THE HUMANITIES? The Digital Humanities are characterized by a cross-disciplinary and collaborative nature, by project orientation, hands-on practices and the use of cultural heritage data, and by the aim to integrate and create domain-specific knowledge with computational methods and tools while reflecting their application and use critically. As such Digital Humanities would seem to offer everything that students need to become not only literate in their specific Humanities field, but to acquire at the same time data literacy and skills like problem solving, computational and critical thinking. As the data which play a role in Digital Humanities are themselves multiform and comprise among other types visual, audio, geospatial, temporal, and statistical data, we can even say that by studying Digital Humanities students become meta- or transliterate and thus able to employ their knowledge, competencies and skills in very diverse social and professional domains. In order to support the claim that doing Digital Humanities involves becoming (meta- / trans-) data literate and to illustrate the acquisition of data literacy in diverse Humanities-specific courses offered at different levels of university education, we have brought together an international group of specialists. This has taken a variety of forms, whether on Twitter, or through blogs, physical or—last year—virtual meetings, and more. We invite applications from digital humanities centers interested in forming an international team to organize Day of DH during the Spring of 2021. Last year, since everyone was working virtually because of COVID-19, meetups were arranged by time-zones; we had promotional Zoom backdrops and an Animal Crossing meetup, lectures, and a well-trafficked hashtag (#DayofDH2020). But we hope that you will bring your own ideas for the best ways to bring together the global community of digital humanists to celebrate the incredible range of ways and places that our work gets done. Day of DH offers the opportunity for centers and students to gain international visibility and expand their professional networks. We are particularly hoping to hear from centers who include opportunities for graduate student involvement in their plans.
