The conference integrates different disciplinary perspectives with the aim of building a unified interdisciplinary research field. Submissions are encouraged to articulate perspectives from literature, linguistics, philosophy, history, informatics and related fields to address questions about intelligence, creativity, and human experience in the digital era, fostering constructive dialogue among various disciplines and highlighting both unique insights and interdisciplinary synergies. We welcome works at different stages of maturity that will be selected by their novelty and relevance to the Text Affects community. Novelty and relevance will be assessed by the community chairs (senior reviewers). Selected papers will receive a detailed peer review by two experts providing recommendations about improvements and presentation at Text Affects. Proposals must be submitted through the OpenReview portal (Text Affects 2025 Venue https://openreview.net/group?id=AFFECTS/2025) open from the 31st of March 2025. As for different stages of maturity, we accept contributions from extended abstracts to short or full papers (2, 6 or 12 pages + references) using the conference template (*author instructions*). The submission deadline is 15 September 2025 but we encourage early submissions as review will be carried out as soon as the paper is received and results notified in three weeks from submission. The topic of this edition is the future of intelligence, a call to reflect on how Text Affects contribute to the development and expression of human and artificial intelligence. Contributions should follow one of the three suggested pathways and inspirational tracks: 1. Intelligence (in text affects) This pathway explores the concept of intelligence—human and artificial—through its narrative, linguistic, and emotional dimensions. It also examines the interplay between humans and machines in text creation and reception, highlighting their collaborative potential and evolving dynamics. It focuses on how texts, both traditional and digital, can be analysed to understand the relationship between creativity, intelligence, and human-technological collaboration. - Literature, Linguistics, and Book History a. Defining intelligence in humans and machines from literary, linguistic, or technological perspectives b. Human-machine interaction and collaboration in text production and reception (historical and synchronic perspectives) c. Linguistic diversity and creativity in machine communication - Sensemaking and Creativity a. Exploring the co-creation of meaning between humans and machines in interpretative processes b. Analysing the impact of linguistic technologies on redefining hermeneutic intelligence c. Bridging computational tools with traditional close reading practices 2. Aesthetics (in text affects) This pathway examines the transformation of aesthetics and cultural experiences in the digital age, including new forms of literature, such as interactive digital storytelling, art, like augmented reality installations, and interactive design seen in narrative-driven video games. It focuses on the aesthetics of digitalisation and curatorial practices, exploring how technology shapes human engagement and the ways cultural and artistic works are consumed. - Phenomenology and Digital Aesthetics a. The transition to born-digital texts and non-linear forms of art and literature b. Modelling user engagement as a facet of human experience c. Digital curatorial practices focusing on aesthetics and interactivity - Hypertext, Electronic Literature, and Games a. The role of hypertexts, digital fiction, and narrative-driven games in challenging or expanding our understanding of intelligence and creativity b. Documenting and analysing non-textual digital artefacts (e.g., tech-demoscene products, machinima) c. Exploring interactive design and game mechanics as models of intelligence and creativity - Cultural Heritage a. Associations between art and text and their role in democratising cultural appreciation b. New technologies supporting the integration of paintings, music, and poetry in digital collections c. Curating and preserving interactive and multimedia narratives 3. Benefits (in text affects) This pathway addresses the role of media and digital technologies in personal and social wellbeing. It also considers issues related to the preservation and accessibility of digital texts, such as ensuring equitable access and long-term cultural sustainability. It includes case studies on how technologies positively impact the social fabric, alongside reflections on preserving emerging digital knowledge forms for future generations. - Positive Intelligent Media a. The role of media technologies and AI in wellbeing and personal and social growth b. Real-life case studies of digital health and wellbeing applications c. Distinctive systemic elements and phenomena of productive transformation are considered critically. The relationship of transformation to classical works and their views on labor provides historical perspective, relating it to critical aspects of value and creativity. In-depth treatment of the phenomena of commodification and reproduction is unprecedented in the literature, providing unique insights on the technology domain. Definition and elaboration of the concepts of technological fetishism and of capacity-price engineering explain distinctive operational features of oligopolistic control. Use of the concept of systematized research regimes to explain how research and product development operate provides necessary perspectives on the value of labor intangibles. Further development of the concept of uselabor explains how production operates in social media oligopolies, and its implications for fairness and justice. A typological analysis then provides a synthesis of how the multiple facets of transformation operate in concert. The vast amount of documentation makes this chapter a major reference work. This chapter has no peers in the literature, and should be of vital interest to bibliographers, researchers, policy analysts, students, and authors interested in how technology oligopolies produce, create and exploit. 5. Dysfunction. Analyzes major systemic dysfunctions of technology oligopolies and their effects on economic wellbeing, health and nature. Influence of new technologies on employment and their dysfunctional effects regarding productivity, the long-term job deficit, and workplace control. Conceptualization of consumer exploitation has no peers in the technology literature. Role of the pricing differential as a dysfunctional feature of consumption is documented with numerous examples. Unique in its conceptualization of data exploitation in technology oligopolies, the role of networks and data clouds. Conceptualization of wants contrivance, its effects and typologies, provides much needed perspective. Analyses of the micro- and macro-panorama of waste and their effects on the environment, health and nature have no peer in the literature. Examination of proposed techno-fixes to eco-planetary dysfunction emphasizes the urgency of addressing carbon emissions, climate change and the destruction of life. Consideration of the commons addresses dysfunctional aspects of access, benefit and expropriation---addressing the contradiction between private wealth and collective benefit. Extensive documentation makes this chapter a major reference work for bibliographers, students, researchers, policy analysts, and authors interested in technology. The contents of this chapter have no peer in the technology literature, and should be considered required reading for courses on technology and society, policy analysis, and social economics. 6. Domination. Provides macro-systemic perspectives on the vital importance of global domination for technology oligopoly capitalism. Unique in how it relates technology oligopoly capitalism to the martial domain, and to global domination over new technologies. The symbiotic relationship between technology oligopolies and the martial domain is explored through several binding elements---geopolitics, commodity chains, labor and value arbitrage, and the setting of hierarchic global controls over the most advanced technologies. Technology-enabled, “soft” approaches to domination---and the role of technology oligopolies---are explored and documented. Ways of enforcing domination are analyzed, considering the role of technology oligopolies, their symbiosis with the military apparatus, and their global impacts. Multimodality in warfare---and its relationship with technology oligopolies---is explored and documented. The concept of taxpayer exploitation---and its relationship with the creation and use of new technologies by the martial domain---is presented and extensively documented. Numerous contemporary examples are provided throughout, along with a vast bibliography that reaches across the technology spectrum. The contents of this chapter have no peers in the literature, in their scope and multidisciplinary perspectives. The vast amount of documentation provided makes it essential reading for any researcher, student, author or bibliographer wishing to explore how technology oligopolies condition our contemporary global reality. 7. Techno-Oligarchy. The existential impasse of technology oligopoly capitalism, and the relations of power imposed by a minuscule, but very wealthy and powerful elite, are core concerns of this chapter. Unique in its conceptualization of a totalistic supra-structure that operates as an alter state---to perpetuate the power of a minuscule elite. Its systemic inducement of social alienation---a pervasive feature of contemporary life---is examined. Alienation from nature, from invention and innovation, from governance, the martial domain, and from socially responsible taxation are considered---to link up with contents of previous chapters. This approach broadens the concept of social alienation, by relating it to macro-scale aspects of technology oligopoly capitalism that are unique in the technology literature. Ways to move forward are addressed, to help chart a trajectory that can provide constructive alternatives. The concept of totalistic control structure may motivate researchers and students to look into the macro dimensions of social systems, and the impacts of technology. Important for conceptualizations of social structure, and the evolution of the relations of power in society. The contents of this chapter should be considered essential reading for researchers, authors and students who wish to understand the power of oligarchic elites over technology, and the imposition of totalistic supra-structures. Coding Provenance: Workshop on Computational Provenance Research A Collaboration between Leuphana’s Provenance Lab and the Getty Provenance Index Leuphana University of Lüneburg, December 18–21, 2025 The Coding Provenance workshop marks the launch of an annual series devoted to training in computational techniques for provenance research. Bringing together scholars and practitioners from fields such as provenance studies, art history, history, material culture, and cultural/social anthropology, the workshop explores how computational methods and techniques can open new pathways for analyzing, interpreting, and rethinking provenance data. Over four days, participants will take part in a dynamic program that combines lectures, hands-on sessions, and open discussions. We will explore how artificial intelligence can assist with collecting, structuring, analyzing, and visualizing provenance data. Alongside technical training, the workshop provides a space for critical reflection on epistemological and methodological challenges that arise when digitizing archival information, applying data models, machine learning algorithms, and large-scale analysis to provenance research. This first edition will take place in person at Leuphana University of Lüneburg in Germany. It will include two preparatory online sessions to encourage early collaboration and tailor parts of the content to participants’ interests. The workshop is organized by the Provenance Lab at Leuphana University and the Getty Provenance Index at the Getty Research Institute. There is currently a job opening at the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Graz for a Digital Humanities Project assistant (without doctorate) in the "Liminal Waters" CHANSE project: https://chanse.org/liminalwater/ Please also distribute this information to your networks. Essential: * Proficiency in spoken and written German and English (minimum B1) * Experience with a web-based CMS (content management system) * Experience with configuring and administrating a (preferably Linux-based) server * Knowledge of core GIS (Geographic Information Systems) concepts * Basic spreadsheet and desktop publishing skills) * Basic proofreading and copy-editing skills * Basic image editing skills (i.e. resizing and formatting image files) * General understanding of online maps and (online) content creation * International experience (work or study experience abroad) Desirable: * Proficiency in other languages (especially Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, German, Greek, French, and/or Portuguese) * Experience with GIS software experience (ie. The UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Designing Responsible NLP<https://www.responsiblenlp.org/> at the University of Edinburgh is thrilled to announce the launch of our Global Majority Fellowship Scheme, to be hosted at the Edinburgh Futures Institute<https://efi.ed.ac.uk/> and the School of Informatics<https://informatics.ed.ac.uk/>. This initiative is focused towards early-career researchers and professionals from the global majority* who are eager to challenge the norms and enrich the field of NLP with diverse perspectives. Fellows will be embedded within the interdisciplinary responsible AI community at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, and can mentor, collaborate and exchange ideas with our doctoral students and their academic supervisors. Topic Details: The focus for this year’s Global Majority Fellowship is to explore innovative but responsible applications of Natural Language Processing in analysing, enhancing, understanding, or reusing digital cultural heritage collections, including those from galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM), or other communities. This interdisciplinary research topic may cover: * Identifying and navigating linguistic bias in cultural data sets * Computational aspects of creating Language Models from heritage collections * The potential for NLP to contextualise marginalised voices and communities within large scale digitised collections * Social, ethical, financial, institutional and legal aspects of the use of heritage collections to create Language Models * The intersection of NLP with related AI technologies within the cultural heritage space, particularly Advanced Text Recognition. * Any other related topic, including practice-based creative interventions in this area.
