We are looking for a cooperative and proactive team member with an interdisciplinary and applied research profile. One of the first tasks of the selected candidate will be the relaunch and extension of Korpus Südtirol (http://www.korpus-suedtirol.it/) (S)he will also be expected to participate in the Computational Linguistics and Digital Humanities activities of the research group and to support other corpus-based projects within the Institute. These tasks include creating, annotating, processing and expanding corpus resources, particularly those local to South Tyrol, while contributing to the growth of the Institute through the development of new projects and the pursuit of funding opportunities. The network metaphor is frequently used to describe this entanglement. In recent decades, however, historians have begun to think about ways of formalizing this approach, appropriating the concepts and tools of graph theory to provide a new perspective on archives. The application of formal network analysis to history is now a highly fertile field of experimentation and research. It can be used to analyze the geographical logics of major circulation networks, to highlight brokers in affiliation networks, to compile family trees to reveal their points of contact, to study the occurrences and co-occurrences of concepts in serial texts, to show the evolution of personal social networks, etc. And through a great deal of empirical work, the specific features that historical disciplines bring to network science become apparent: particular attention to the modeling of data that is often incomplete and uncertain, the need to take account of temporality in all its finesse, the necessity to find a language that allows mathematical results to be interpreted in a qualitative narrative. In 2009, following a workshop dedicated to the application of social network analysis to history, a small community of practice, the Historical Network Research community<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…>, was created. It evolved into a series of workshops and then an international conference, of which the present edition is the 9th to date, after conferences in Hamburg, Ghent, Lisbon, Turku, Brno, Luxembourg and Mainz. 2013 saw the creation of the HNR Collective Bibliography<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…>, a central tool for sharing the community’s scientific output. In 2017, the first issue of JHNR, the Journal of Historical Network Research<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…>, was published, allowing everyone to share their research in Open Access. Other resources include a YouTube channel<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…> with recorded lectures and a newsletter. Conference focus: Visualization Network visualization is often the first thing to be seen, whether it’s an illegible but colorful node-link diagram, an elaborate sociogram, an austere matrix or a fancy flow map. Because of our discomfort with basing our interpretation on an object apparently built on somewhat subjective foundations, because they are very likely to be influenced by a graphic bias, we often relegate visualizations to a minor role in our exploratory approaches, preferring the cold (apparent) scientificity of graph metrics. But just because we see naive uses of network visualization doesn’t mean it can’t be a highly effective tool for understanding, exploring and communicating our research data. One of the ambitions of the conference is therefore to question our use of network visualization in history, a concern that will be reflected in particular in the workshops and keynotes. Note that the HNR conference is open to all subjects involving network analysis in historical disciplines, so the thematic emphasis of this 2024 edition has no impact on the selection of contributions. The only effect will be that an image will be requested for each paper (after the review phase, if not included in the submitted abstract) to create a gallery that will be displayed during the conference to spark discussion about our network visualization practices. Topics For our 2024 conference, we welcome contributions discussing any historical period and geographical area. Authors may be historians, linguists, librarians, archaeologists, art historians, computer scientists, social scientists as well as scholars from other disciplines working with historical data. Topics may include, but are not limited to: * Applications of network analysis to history, art history, ancient history, intellectual history, economic history, social history, media history, political history, history of religions, biography, public history, micro-history, postcolonial history, global history, archaeology, literary history, cultural history, etc. * Analysis of specific network types, such as geospatial networks, temporal and dynamic networks, bipartite networks, multi-layer networks, multiplex networks, etc. * Methodological contributions concerning the applicability of network analysis to history, including, for example, modeling, ontologies, linked data, the use of graph metrics, visual network analysis, etc. * Pedagogical contributions, presenting teaching scenarios, literacy questions, software or feature presentations, interfaces, etc. Formats Long papers Long papers consist of a 20-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of discussion, and are intended to present comprehensive research. An abstract of 500-1000 words is required, including at least 3 citations. It should contain a description of the paper’s subject and research questions, an overview of the data used and methods employed, a discussion of the research results and possibly the wider implication for network analysis in history. Short papers Short papers consist of a 10-minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of discussion, and are intended to present research in progress. An abstract of 300-500 words is required, including at least 3 citations. It should contain a brief description of the subject and the research questions, an overview of the data used and the methods employed, a discussion of any results or questions still open at this stage. ________________________________ Submission guidelines Submission Abstracts must be submitted via the conference management platform by January 31, 2024: https://hnr2024.sciencesconf.org/<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…> The author (or corresponding author in the case of multi-authored papers) must create an account on the platform and then fill in the form, copying the abstract in full text (no PDF or other attachments). Including an image in the abstract is encouraged to allow a general discussion of our network visualization practices. If, for any reason, the submitted version does not contain any, authors of accepted papers will be invited to add an image and caption at a later stage. Abstracts and images will then be published on the conference website ahead of the event and archived in a book of abstracts on Zenodo. All best wishes, —---- CALL FOR PAPERS —---- Historical Arguments and the Digital University of Luxembourg, 25th-27th June 2024 In 2016, Franco Morretti argued that “somehow digital humanities has managed to secure for itself this endless infancy, in which it is always a future promise.”1 In the years since, little has changed. Whilst there has been exponential growth in the number of resources, tools, and methodological discussions in the digital humanities, there remains limited contribution towards traditional historical narratives implementing these, increasing the apparent gap between DH and traditional history. Terminology in the digital humanities – networks, mapping, modelling – has long been used metaphorically to explore historical phenomenon; yet in digitalizing these ideas, we have gradually moved away from the analytical arguments these phrases were originally used for. The more digital methodologies are separated from traditional approaches – focusing on building without analysing and represented only on ‘digital humanities’ panels in historical conferences – the greater the risk is of becoming increasingly insular and closed-off, “an interdisciplinary silo in which we are only speaking to other displaced scholars.”2 As a result, the digital humanities are often still faced with the ‘so-what’ question: what impact can these new methods and approaches make on historical arguments and how can they advance scholarship? This conference seeks to address the ‘so-what’, promoting conversation as to how new research processes and methodologies might build into and contribute to traditional narratives. Though the building of digital resources and tools are in themselves important analytical and interpretative acts – and are slowly beginning to be recognised as such within the wider humanities – they are also vital building blocks for historical arguments that can exist as exemplars of both digital and traditional scholarship. This conference offers a space to consider how this gap might be closed once more, encouraging historical case studies reflecting on the ways in which digital methodologies have offered a means of exploring historical sources and expanding historical narratives and fostering digital history research questions that push beyond merely the descriptive to the interpretative and analytical. We invite abstracts of 300-500 words for 20-minute papers that demonstrate the argumentative practices of Digital History and the broader historical profession. These may employ any form of methodology or tool under the umbrella of ‘digital history’ examining any historical period across the globe, but must present findings and arguments engaging with and contributing to historical narratives. Papers will be arranged chronologically or by historical theme rather than methodological approach, reframing the focus on the historical contribution once more. Submissions from PhDs and ECRs are very welcome, as are ‘works in progress’, so long as they remain indicative of an historical argument, and are not project proposals or overviews. --------------------------- *DH Benelux 2024 Conference* 4-7 June 2024, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium *Submission deadline*: 31 January 2024 *Website*: https://2024.dhbenelux.org --------------------------- We are pleased to announce the call for papers for the DH Benelux 2024 Conference, a gathering of scholars, researchers, practitioners, and enthusiasts in the field of Digital Humanities (DH). The conference explores the theme “Breaking Silos, Connecting Data: Advancing Integration and Collaboration in Digital Humanities.” DH research often involves working with incomplete, fragmented, and diverse datasets and collections created in specific contexts and stored in separate institutions. We invite contributions that explore strategies, techniques, and methodologies for breaking down silos and connecting disparate data sets and sources, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and enabling new kinds of access to data. In particular, we welcome papers that discuss innovative approaches and best practices for designing and implementing data pipelines in the context of Digital Humanities, facilitating the flow and transformation of data across various formats, structures, and platforms. In the last decade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has started playing a significant role in data integration: we encourage submissions that explore the application of AI techniques, such as natural language processing, computer vision, and multimodal machine learning, in data integration. Topics may include AI-driven data mapping, alignment, entity recognition, data enrichment, and metadata generation. Modelization and semantic frameworks play a crucial role in representing and integrating heterogeneous humanities data: we therefore invite papers that investigate the use of conceptual models, ontologies, semantic web technologies, and knowledge representation approaches for fostering harmonization and interoperability. In a data-centered research domain such as DH, ensuring transparency, reliability, and accessibility of integrated data is of utmost importance. We welcome contributions that address the challenges and opportunities in adhering to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles in the context of data integration, sharing insights on best practices, ethical considerations, and data governance. Related to this is the link with Open Research (also called Open Science or Open Scholarship) and how publication, curation, and preservation strategies as well as particular choices for (open or closed) tools, software, or infrastructures determine the impact and reusability of research results. Finally, data-driven approaches often develop strategies to summarize and interpret information extracted from sources to create a new understanding of the material gathered. We welcome papers that propose case studies, methodological enquiries, data visualization techniques, and discussion of data-driven research within the domain of DH. Contributions that reuse data from other projects or institutions and integrate the challenges of data reuse in their papers will be particularly welcome. The position is initially limited to three years (100% employment, pay scale TV-L13), and the projected starting date is March 2024. The successful candidate should have completed their doctoral degree (or will have completed it by the time of employment). The position is based at the Institute of English, American and Romance Studies. However, tasks include research activities in the postdoc’s own and collaborative projects, as well as the teaching of two courses each semester (3 instructional hours per week) in the humanities and social sciences (English Studies, Linguistics and Communication Studies, Political Science). The focus of the required competencies, which are to be applied in research and teaching, is the compilation, evaluation, and interpretation of large text sets with the help of computational methods. The successful candidate will employ a variety of methods to process and analyse literary as well as non-literary corpora to pursue a wide range of research questions. Mastery of quantitative methods such as text mining or stylometry is a prerequisite. A central task of this position, however, is to bring these methods into a fruitful exchange with qualitative methods, such as qualitative discourse- or content analysis (experience with qualitative methods is therefore considered an asset). In addition to these methodological competencies, the successful candidate must have a proven interest in questions of literary studies. Furthermore, the successful candidate will teach students how to employ different tools from the Digital Humanities to pursue questions specific to the field, as well as how to critically evaluate these tools’ capacities and limitations. They should collaborate with practitioners of other quantitative and qualitative methods in developing the interdisciplinary teaching of methods and methodology at the faculty. The CLS INFRA Fellowship Programme provides access to a wide range of data, tools and knowledge. Details also available at https://www.plottingpoetry.org/conference/2024einsiedeln/cfp Best, Petr --- *PLOTTING POETRY 7: Metres of Humour.* 26-27-28 June, 2024 Einsiedeln, Switzerland *Call for Papers* *Plotting Poetry* is a conference series focussed on computational, statistical and other quantitative approaches for the study of poetic texts, and of poeticity more broadly. This quantitative focus, this insistence on the formalization and operationalisation of texts, from simple pen and paper counting and compiling to complex algorithms, provides us with a number of paths to analyze, describe, interpret, attribute, classify, track and generally access the texts. The Plotting Poetry conferences bring together a friendly community of researchers, and articles rooted in the conference papers have given rise to several peer-reviewed collective volumes. The name of the group stems from an effort to translate a (perfectly serious) pun by the French modernist poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who in 1917 wrote that poets should “[machiner] poetry as has been done for the world”, where the verb *machiner* is visibly used for *mechanize*, although it really means *to plot*, as one would *plot* a coup. In this group, we are plotting against our own limitations by trying to plot literature on graphs, devising mechanized approaches to dissect the mechanics of poetry. This year’s conference welcomes a focus on the many forms of humour in verse. Although verse and humour might appear to sit at opposite ends of a literary hierarchy of taste and sophistication, the two have appeared together for as long as verse has been written, sung, played, shared or shouted. Versified humour can be found in popular productions and in highbrow literature, with poets writing lighter pieces alongside their other productions, as well as including humorous passages within their serious works. Both materials - humour and verse - rely on a departure from *bona fide* communication, seeking to harness the shortcomings of language, to create layered meanings and to trigger an additional effort from the recipient trying to make sense of incongruous or opaque utterances. Whilst ambiguity would be an enemy of efficient communication, it is a staple of both humour and poetry. Versification usually provides us with a reassuring sameness, and versified humour sometimes relies on this learned expectation of sameness, taking advantage of our prior knowledge in order to mislead us. This happens when an unexpected approximate rhyme brings to mind the obscene word that would provide a similar yet perfect rhyme. Or when the choice of a specific metre, with its baggage of associated uses and meanings, helps create parody or satire. Or even, very simply, when the stanzaic structure of a poem builds then breaks the monotony of lines, signaling the humorous intent of its punchline. In French, the punchline of a joke and the striking end of a poem are both named *la chute*: the fall. Verse has an ability to leave an impression on our minds and memories, and as such can readily serve persuasion efforts, from slogans or commercials to epic poems and state propaganda. Humour is often a deeply political reality. Despite its affinity with taboo subjects and irreverence, one of humour’s regular uses is to spread and maintain stereotypes, assert domination, and strengthen the feelings of belonging and allegiance through a so-called universality. This humour of the dominant tends to suppress minority voices and singular perspectives, requiring the dominated to laugh along in an effort to fit with the in-group. And yet, it can also be used as a weapon for attacking the order in place, voicing singularities, and questioning the established norms. Examining the powers of those two phenomena, one can wonder: What happens when a versified text is humorous, and what when a humorous text is in verse? Can shared regularities be found in the many verse forms of humorous texts? Can we measure those, and how? Should, or can, the funniness of it be taken into account, or even just its humorous intent, despite the high degree of cultural, linguistic and historical specificity? Papers addressing humour alongside verse or other highly-controlled and rhythmical forms are all welcome, whether written, read, sung or smuggled, from the lowest to the highest registers, from any time period and any language area. This focus on humour in verse is not an exclusive one, and we encourage the submission of papers that use quantitative tools and methods in investigating poetry or poeticity, regardless of their link to humorous poetry. Besides, as has been traditional at Plotting Poetry conferences, works on other genres may also be included, provided that a mechanization or quantification apparatus is being used to explore their poeticity. The Amsterdam School of Historical Studies<https://ash.uva.nl/> (ASH) invites applications for a PhD position as part of the Faculty of Humanities starting grant “Sound and Foreign Affairs from a Digital History Approach, 1700-1990”, led by principal investigators Dr. H. Alloul and Dr. M.J.H.F. Wevers. This interdisciplinary project is situated at the crossroads of two fields. International History is broadly conceived and includes the study of diplomacy, interstate relations, conflict studies, and transnational encounters. Sonic History examines the significance of sound, noise, silence, or music within formal and informal spaces. The project seeks to harness the possibilities of digital methods to examine the reproduction, representation, reception, or the materiality of sound in foreign affairs. For further background, see the suggested reading list below. The PhD position, commencing on 1 February 2024, is fully funded and lasts 4 (1,0 fte) to 5 years (0,8 fte), depending on the candidate’s preference. The position includes coursework and limited teaching duties. What are you going to do? We are seeking to hire an enthusiastic PhD candidate with a strong methodological focus who wants to specialize in International History, taking sound as an object of study. Candidates can work on a project of their own choosing and are encouraged to think creatively in terms of research design. We invite interested candidates to prepare short pitches (details below) that could, for instance, examine: * listening practices, elucidating how sound was perceived and understood by historical actors with different backgrounds in various international settings; * how silence, noise, sonorous aspects, or sound technologies shaped diplomatic dialogues and debates, using sound design methods or speech-generation to reconstruct events; * how artists and their music participated to, or operated in transnational circuits, for instance using network analysis or GIS; * how sound, in its relation to foreign affairs, was historically depicted and recorded through various mediums, employing multimodal digital history techniques; * the physical and acoustic properties of spaces and their influence on international exchanges, relying on, for example, 3D-modelling. The chosen timeframe should fall within 1700-1990. There are no geographical restrictions, provided that candidates can read the relevant primary sources. Projects exploring non-Western perspectives are encouraged. Candidates without prior experience in digital methods should demonstrate a keenness to acquire these skills. The University of Amsterdam will provide the necessary training and guidance. Depending on the research project, potential primary sources – digitally accessible or easily digitizable – could consist of: * Sound and radio recordings; * (Printed) diplomatic documents; * (Un)published (and serialized) correspondence; * Newspaper and magazine archives; * Parliamentary proceedings and court records; * Visual sources (incl. photographs, paintings, etchings, drawings). Tasks and responsibilities: * submission of a PhD thesis within the period of appointment; * presenting intermediate research results at workshops and conferences; * participation in the Research School and Faculty of Humanities PhD training programmes; * teaching deployment at BA-level in the second or third year of the appointment, for a maximum of 0,2 fte per year. What do you have to offer? You are a motivated, creative thinker who is willing to explore uncharted territories of research. You can work independently while guided by your supervisors. Being a team-player, you enjoy working in close collaboration with other researchers and institutions. You have good communication skills that will enable you to present your research clearly in papers, talks, and the final dissertation. Candidates should have: * a completed Master's degree in a field relevant to the proposed PhD project, e.g. History, Digital Humanities, International Relations, Anthropology, Media Studies, or Musicology. November bis 24. November 2023 in Frankfurt am Main Digitization has reached almost all areas of science and scholarship. And even in the cultural sciences and humanities, computers, databases and digital tools are increasingly important. Last year's annual conference "Digital Hermeneutics: Machines, Procedures, Meaning<https://www.fernuni-hagen.de/digitale-hermeneutik/>" of the research cluster digital_culture<https://www.fernuni-hagen.de/forschung/schwerpunkte/digitale-kultur/index.s…> dealt with the theoretical and conceptual challenges inherent in hermeneutic methods, tools, and applications. The results of the conference supported understanding and meaning, when algorithms, programs, machines, and other technical procedures contribute to it[1]<https://www.fernuni-hagen.de/forschung/schwerpunkte/digitale-kultur/projekt…>. Following up on these initial theoretical and conceptual results, we now want to address more technical aspects of methods, technologies, tools, and applications supporting Digital Hermeneutics under the title "Digital Hermeneutics II: Sources, Analysis, Interpretation, Annotation, Curation" and take a look at digitally supported hermeneutic research processes and anticipate the future of digitized working practices in the cultural sciences and humanities. Without such digital support systems, it will no longer be possible to index, find, annotate, and curate the ever-growing number of digitally available resources for research data. Digital systems are also already in use for analyzing, indexing, enriching, and annotating multimedia data. But what about systems that support the analysis, annotation, and interpretation of digital research data - thus: representation of hermeneutic methods - and their results as well as supporting machine learning, reasoning, and finally automating the documentation of annotation, interpretation, and understanding? In an exchange between humanities scholars and computer scientists, we want to explore the possibilities and limits of the vision of digitally supported hermeneutics circling around the following questions: * Digitization processes bear the risk of information loss or structural shifts and biases. How can these risks be dealt with? * The transformation of sources to data involves coding and enables the enrichment with information. How does one deal with the loss of the original source characteristics? Do standardizations promote a focus on unifying features of different sources or can nuances and deviations also be mapped? * Do the questions and epistemological interests of humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences change the availability, quality, and quantity of sources in the form of data? * How can algorithms and tools support, possibly even expand, research questions and epistemological interests in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences? * Can computer science also benefit from the discussion of methods in the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies?
