Dear DH-colleagues, (apologies for cross-posting) we (DH Potsdam) invite you to our next online 'Code & culture' lecture titled 'The cultural code of gender: from binary classes to a complex phenomenon of literary characterisation', by Prof. Dr. Mareike Schumacher (currently assistant professor for Digital Humanities at the University of Stuttgart). Here is the abstract for the talk: Can the two classes "male" and "female" – often understood as a binary either-or distinction – actually be modeled as basic units ("primitives") that can be arranged into complex codes designating all facets of gender in its multiplicity? In this talk, an analogy between the technical binary code and the cultural code of gender is used to test the hypothesis that gender can be seen as a discrete phenomenon constructed through varying combinations of male and female features. Additionally, it is brought into question whether "neutral" should be seen as a third basic unit and whether there might be more “gender primitives”. The presentation also includes a case study from Computational Literary Studies, in which several corpora consisting of literary texts in the German language are analyzed. In the study, gender roles such as ‘father’, ‘young girl’, or ‘person’ are classified according to basic gender units. By analysis of almost 400 character profiles, typical and atypical gender codes are defined, and a spheric notion of gender is introduced. Time and place: 🗓️ May 7, 2024 , 18:30 (CEST), Zoom. Best, Tuomo Hiippala --- POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES --- This is a fixed-term position for 36 months, starting in September 2024 or as agreed, based in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher is responsible for developing structured, machine-readable representations of multimodality for the page-based and audiovisual media studied in the project. As the descriptions of multimodality are collected using crowdsourcing, the post-doctoral researcher is also expected to participate in designing and implementing crowdsourcing pipelines. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in digital humanities, humanities computing, language technology, computer science or a related field, and have a keen interest in multimodality. Previous experience of developing structured representations for diverse forms of data is essential. Previous experience or interest in volunteer-based or paid crowdsourcing or citizen science is considered an asset. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher is responsible for developing large corpora that describe the multimodal structure of the diverse media studied in the project. To scale up the corpus size, the data will be described by crowdsourced non-expert workers. The post-doctoral researcher will lead the development of crowdsourcing tasks that generate descriptions that can be then compiled into systematic corpus annotations. The appointee will also participate in developing new methods for analysing large multimodal corpora. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in linguistics, semiotics, media studies or related field with a specific focus on multimodality. The appointee must have a deep understanding of contemporary theories of multimodality relevant to the domain of the project. Previous experience of designing and implementing annotation schemes for multimodal corpora is essential. Knowledge of programming languages such as Python and mark-up languages such as XML and JSON for managing research data is considered an advantage. Dear EADH list members, Please find below a Call for Papers for the second Web/Comics workshop, co-located with the Hypertext 2024 conference. ***Submission deadline 15 June 2024 **** Web/Comics 2024: Creativity in Small Spaces is the second in a new workshop series for the ACM Hypertext conference https://ht.acm.org/ht2024/. Web/Comics 2024 wants to investigate whether webcomics exemplify the expansion of hypertext beyond the linearity of information processing systems into a type of interactivity that is nonlinear (multicursal) and ludic. It uses webcomics to explore the boundaries of hypertext, for example by assessing its utility to the reader or user and its effects on “readers’ ongoing process of establishing meaning and coherence. At the same time, it asks how profoundly new tools such as text-to-image models and other forms of generative AI are altering comics production and consumption. The workshop will be held in conjunction with the Hypertext 2024 conference, 10-13 September, at the University of Poznań, Poland. The workshop will take place in a hybrid modality. While in-person attendance is preferred, we will allow remote presentations to maximize inclusivity. Participants are asked to submit a short lightning paper (2-4 pages) representing current work or original thinking in this area with the intention of encouraging interactive group discussion. The work presented should directly engage with the hypertextual specificity of webcomics.
