*Apologies for cross posting* Dear textual scholars, The Institute for Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE) is calling for reviews for a special issue of the journal RIDE <https://ride.i-d-e.de/>, dedicated to *Tools and Environments for Digital Scholarly Editing (DSE)*. The first issue <https://ride.i-d-e.de/issues/issue-11/> of RIDE dedicated to Tools and Environments was published in January 2020. *Reviews for the second issue will be accepted until the 30st of September 2021.* To guide reviewers through the review process and to create a structure for the evaluation, we provide *Criteria for Reviewing Digital Tools and Environments for DSE* that are supposed to be applicable to various types of resources. We kindly ask you to email us before start reviewing a tool at *ride-tools (at) i-d-e.de <http://i-d-e.de/>* with a suggestion of which resource you would like to review and with a short explanation of your affiliation and area of expertise. This is important in order to avoid multiple reviews of the same tool. *Background* In the introduction to his book *Software takes command *(Bloomsbury Publishing, 2013) Lev Manovich states that “software has become our interface to the world, to others, to our memory and our imagination”. Is the same happening in the world of digital scholarly editing? Certainly we cannot ignore their fundamental role in our daily scholarly practices and in the interactions with our objects of study. Insofar as tools shape scholarly editions, they also shape scholarly editing. A new RIDE issue is devoted to tools for digital scholarly editing. The aim of this issue is to: - contribute to the discussion about tooling in Digital Humanities, - bring to the forefront the instruments instead of the final products, - provide a venue for discussing best practices in the development and usage of tools, - list useful resources for all those involved in scholarly editing. Beyond that, we hope that the critical examination of digital tools draws greater attention to the (scholarly) achievements that their creation and maintenance imply. The journal *RIDE* was founded in 2014 to “provide a forum in which expert peers criticise and discuss the efforts of digital editors in order to improve current practices and advance future developments” (RIDE Editorial). RIDE is Open Access, reviews are published as HTML and downloadable as TEI. All reviews will be peer reviewed in order to reach a high quality level of the evaluations. The special issue on Digital Tools and Environments for DSE will be edited by Anna-Maria Sichani (University of Sussex) and Elena Spadini (University of Lausanne). *Submission details* Reviews are accepted in English, French, Italian, and Spanish. The length of the review can vary depending on how much the resource offers that is worthy of discussion (approximately 2000-5000 words). Please submit your review at *ride-tools (at) i-d-e.de <http://i-d-e.de/>* as an editable text file (preferably, but not necessarily docx to facilitate the conversion to TEI). Please send illustrations as separate image files (jpg or png) and leave a note in the text as a placeholder for each image. In addition to the text, we collect keywords. Each review should be accompanied by a short abstract in English, independently of the language used in the main text. The questionnaire mentioned in the submission checklist has been designed for scholarly digital editions so far. 1st Shared Task on Scene Segmentation in German Narratives We invite contributions to the 1st Shared Task on automatic Scene Segmentation (STSS) for German narrative texts. Scenes are time-, location- and plot-wise coherent units of a story, and can predominantly be found in narrative texts like novels or biographies. Scene segmentation is needed for a high-level content analysis of longer texts, but also for many subsequent tasks for NLP applied in longer narrative texts, since even modern methods struggle with processing text longer than a couple of sentences or paragraphs. Day of DH 2021 - April 29 - Save the date!

Day of DH is a way to show how digital humanities happens in many different ways and is practised by a varied group of people. This Day of DH comes after a year of living in the virtual space and for that, it is more special. We have had a year of seeing human life and technology intersect intimately and seen its affordances and its limitations come to the fore virtual meeting after virtual meeting. So #dayofdh2021 provides us with an opportunity to share and reflect upon how a global pandemic changed DH, its directions, your research questions, and more. *The day of DH 2021 will take place on April 29.* This year the organizing committee is led by Loyola University Chicago and UCLA in the USA, the University of Guelph in Canada, and Università del Piemonte Orientale in Italy. Day of DH 2021 theme is MULTILINGUAL DH. The Leipzig Summer University is special because it not only seeks to offer a space for the discussion and acquisition of new knowledge, skills and competences in those computer technologies which play a central role in Humanities Computing and which determine every day more and more the work done in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences, as well as in publishing, libraries, and archives etc., but because it tries to integrate also linguistics with the Digital Humanities, which pose questions about the consequences and implications of the application of computational methods and tools to cultural artefacts of all kinds. However, they are under-represented in language technology and semantic web research. In this workshop, two recently awarded H2020 projects, Odeuropa and Polifonia, are teaming up to advance our understanding of how smells and music are represented in texts and structured data. The topics we want to address revolve around extracting references to smells, music, context, and visual information from text as well as relevant data describing their cultural, historical and political context, and model them in the form of interlinked knowledge graphs. This research has a strong interdisciplinary character, hence the workshop has the potential to attract researchers from diverse disciplines from both social sciences and humanities and computer science. Its potential impact is significant to many application areas including: preservation and valorisation of cultural heritage, data-driven policy making in cultural heritage, urban planning, artistic performances, applications for scholars in musicology and history, applications for museums, innovation in teaching, maintenance and exploitation of large catalogues, archives and libraries. We aim at creating a reference venue where new ideas and results can be shared and lead the way towards a technological and cultural shift in how we understand and experience our cultural heritage. Topics of interest: The topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Olfactory, musical and visual information extraction from text Olfactory, musical and visual knowledge representation Resources for olfactory, musical and visual knowledge Extraction of socio-cultural and historical context information from text Extraction of time, space, events, people and (musical, olfactory and visual) artifacts from text Knowledge graphs integrating olfactory, musical and visual knowledge Multilingual text corpora on musical and olfactory heritage Automatic and semi-automatic generation of language descriptions of sensory experience Methods and approaches to represent degrees of sensorial experiences (e.g. intensity, dissipation) Applications for teaching/training/valorisation of multisensory data and knowledge Submission: We welcome submissions of long and short papers covering a wide range of NLP and semantic web topics dealing with the extraction and analysis of information from multisensory data. ESU DH 2021: Announcement of dates

11th EUROPEAN SUMMER UNIVERSITY IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES "CULTURE & TECHNOLOGY" - 3rd to 13th of August 2021 UNIVERSITY OF LEIPZIG As some may remember the 11th European Summer University in Digital Humanities “Culture & Technology” to be held last summer in Leipzig had to be postponed to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is to inform you that given that the DAAD has agreed to support the European Summer University again for two years, we have decided to hold ESU DH 2021 from the 3rd to 13th of August 2021 in Leipzig as promised. It will be organised together with the Forum Digital Humanities Leipzig[1] (FDHL). Although we are aware that the pandemic may hold still many challenges in store for us all, we are planning to meet with everybody in person in Leipzig. Should this not be possible we will put a plan B in place which could either mean having a hybrid event or, if the worst comes to the worst, a fully virtual one. We will just have to see what the next months bring. As in former years the Summer University is supposed to take place across 11 whole days. The intensive programme should consist of workshops, teaser sessions, public lectures, regular project presentations, a poster session and a panel discussion. At the moment a new ConfTool is being installed. All users of ESU’s 2020 ConfTool[2] as well as all the application documents submitted there in 2020 will be transferred to the new installation. As soon as the new installation is ready and we have updated ESU’s website[3] with information about the workshops which will be offered, we will come back with more information. How should a DH Association for the UK and Ireland carry out advocacy? How can we ensure that any Association that emerges has both the authority and representation to speak on behalf of DH communities of practice? What are the entities that need expert input from the DH community, and how can the Association ensure that it informs and shapes policy and other decision making processes? The aim of this workshop is to discuss the policy areas in which DH interests need to be heard, and discuss some shared, strategic challenges where a united voice of those working in DH is needed. The workshop will explore the key issues that affect DH development in the UK and Ireland that have policy implications, areas where expert opinions and guidance may be needed, and the audiences for these views. We will focus on three key areas where advocacy is needed in DH: Research, teaching, and infrastructure. In research, these issues include the way that DH tools, methods, and outputs are assessed for national research assessment exercises and peer review of digital content, tools, methods and research outputs, and the impact of open access publishing on DH research outputs. For teaching, central issues have emerged around shared curricula and teaching assessment, especially the lessons learned from recent experimentation with online course delivery. In terms of infrastructure development, what are areas for investment that will impact the development and uptake of DH? And what can we do to effect engagement with those shaping policy regarding key infrastructure investment? Is there a need for a shared view? How can we advocate for DH, and to whom? How best can we facilitate international cooperation and collaboration: in the UK’s post-Brexit landscape, how can we stay connected despite the loss of schemes like Erasmus? How can we ensure continued UK DH involvement in H2020? And structurally, what model of DH Association in the UK and Ireland would underpin an advocacy agenda? What membership models would support an organisation that has a resonant and authoritative ‘voice’ for our field? Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to let you know that the Humanist mailing list is active again, after a long hiatus. Following is the first welcome message from Willard McCarty, explaining how this important discussion venue for the Digital Humanities community will work in the future. The past members of the list have not been automatically migrated to the new mail-server, so both old and new members will have to apply for subscription. Yours sincerely. We begin with this message after 200 days of silence and a great amount of cooperative work between Cologne and London to accomplish its migration to Universitt zu Kln. Thanks are due to all those involved, without whom the undesirable would be a fact. But it isn't, and I am grateful. Allow me first some housekeeping. Then other messages will follow. So, two matters for your attention. (1) Where it is. From now on Humanist lives at the same web address as before, dhhumanist.org, which is the only one you should use for it. The web system is likely to be moved to another server in the future, in which case <dhhumanist.org> will continue to work, whereas a server-based address will stop working. (2) How it goes. Humanist now has an editorial policy and an Editorial Board, for which see the About page (https://dhhumanist.org/announcement.html) The policy, worked out with the help of the Board, is as brief as I could get it and as close as I could make it to Humanist's de facto practices over the last three decades. My preference was to leave the policy implicit, but I've concluded that Humanist must have an explicit one and that it has to be spelled out for all to see. The Editorial Board is intended to function in much the same way as for journals, to provide the Editor with colleagues on whom to rely, and by its membership to signify the reach of Humanist in several dimensions. The Board also marks a transition that was accomplished years ago: from a clearing house of information to a form of scholarly publication. Now for the good stuff.
