*Katrin Dennerlein/Patrick Fortmann: “R**ewriting Literary History With Algorithms**”* *Max Kade Conference 2024 at the *Department of Germanic Studies, University of Illinois at Chicago, November 14 & 15, 2024 Location: Behavioral Sciences Building, 1007 W Harrison Street, Suite 153, MC 206, Chicago, IL 60607 and on Zoom In the past 20 years, data-driven research approaches have profoundly shaped many academic disciplines. This shift has also influenced literary studies, especially with the digitization of large text collections over the last 10 to 15 years. By applying algorithms to these collections of digital literary texts, scholars can gain new insights into their structures and developments. However, literary texts have been studied quantitatively far less frequently than non-literary texts. They present particular challenges for quantitative analysis due to their complexity, such as their fictional nature, their creative and aesthetically motivated use of language, and the unique characteristics of literary symbols. Unlike other texts, literary works often communicate indirectly through stories and images, and they tend to individualize and hybridize their style, themes, and forms. Several key challenges arise from the distinctive nature of literary texts and the current state of research in this emerging field. These include the need to adapt text analysis tools to the domain of literature; the complex relationship between norms and deviations in literary texts; determining similarities and differences between literary and non-literary works; the difficulty of reaching consensus on how to annotate features relevant to literary studies; the lack of interpretive transparency in modern formal models; and the urgent need to build reference corpora. Achieving progress in this area requires close interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from literary studies, digital humanities, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, and computer science. In recent years, several initiatives have advanced this field, including research funding programs, book series, journals and a number of important monographs. Given these developments, it is now time to assess the field and take stock. At the heart of this discussion lies the question of how insights from digital humanities have prompted a reevaluation—or even a complete rewriting—of literary history. The primary focus of this conference is the presentation of research findings. While methodological discussions remain important, speakers will emphasize the results of their work, demonstrating how these findings contribute to reshaping or transforming existing literary knowledge. This means either revising established hypotheses or introducing new perspectives on topics such as the formation of literary groups and movements, textual features, and the correlations between literature and historical or societal events. The presentations will offer findings that challenge and refine existing hypotheses about literary evolution. They will explore the diverging characteristics of specific genres, styles, and themes across periods and movements. Speakers will also address how literature's cultural capital and its role in literary life have evolved, as well as how new groups and trends have emerged within literary history. Additionally, these presentations will offer novel insights into both textual features and metadata analyses. Our guest this time is Prof. Dr. Anastasia Glawion, Junior Professor for Digital Literature and Methods at the FAU University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. Title: *Capturing Participatory Culture: A Network Analysis of Fanfiction Communities and Reader Interactions* Abstract: /Over the past 20 years, fanfiction writing has been on the rise. This fan-driven practice presents an ideal case for digital literary studies, as the texts are digitized, widely available, and challenge the status quo of the canon. Many fanfiction scholars have underlined the importance of the participatory aspect in studying the phenomenon. In this presentation, I show how interactions on fanfiction websites can be investigated through metadata-based network analysis. This approach provides fresh insights into textual reception and reader engagement, while offering a more comprehensive perspective on how fanfiction communities interact with texts and reshape them. As a result of this process, various interpretive communities emerge, each with its own dynamic. Some span across multiple fandoms, while others demonstrate different perspectives on a single canon, such as communities in the “Harry Potter” universe where a distinctive cluster focused on Hermione becomes visible./ The talk will take place online on *October 24 at 18:00 CEST*. Dear colleagues, From March 31 to April 5,2025, we are holding a week-long text-focused DH Spring School <https://www.uni-potsdam.de/en/digital-humanities/activities/dh-potsdam-spri…> in Potsdam, Germany. The School is aimed at students and early-career scholars* who are beginning to explore DigitalHumanities (DH) and are interested in working with textual sources. Participation is free. The concept of the DH school While traditional hermeneutic approaches remaincrucial in the humanities, computational methods offer additional perspectives for textual analysis. The Spring Schoolaims to guide participants through the process of formulating a research question about a textual source to developing a comprehensive research project. The School provides anintroduction to several computational methods and offers an opportunity for the students to reflect on the prospects of applying those methods to their own research projects/interests. "Text as Data" features intensive discussions, workshops, and lectures tailored for students across allhumanities disciplines who are interested in computational approaches to text. Dear all, I'm looking to recruit a post-doctoral researcher in computer science or digital humanities to my ERC-funded project, which started in May 2024: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/a-foundation-for-em… The project develops novel methods and resources for studying multimodality, or how human communication naturally combines multiple 'modes' of expression. These methods and resources are used to develop empirically founded theories of multimodal communication in the domain of everyday cultural artefacts. The data studied in the project includes, for example, school textbooks, user-generated explanation videos on social media, news broadcasts, instruction manuals and online newspapers. This is a fixed-term position for 48 months, starting in January 2025 or as agreed, based in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland. The deadline for applications is October 21, 2024. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher is responsible for developing new methods for querying the multimodal corpora created in the project, which describe the structure of multimodal discourse using graphs that combine crowdsourced human insights and vector representations. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in digital humanities, humanities computing, language technology, computer science or a related field, and have a keen interest in multimodality. Previous experience of working with knowledge graphs or information retrieval is essential.
