ICT with Industry workshop - Artificial Intelligence for Text Simplification (17-21 January 2022)

Are you a young scientist with a background in ICT and do you have a creative and inquisitive mind? Do you like to think outside-the-box? Would you like to get into contact with industrial partners such as KB, RTL, Axini, SIG or Philips and solve a case together? Then apply for the “ICT with Industry 2022” Lorentz Workshop. Every year, the Lorentz Center and NWO together organize an ICT with Industry workshop. During five days a group of about 50 researchers from IT and Computer Science from a wide range of universities (within the Netherlands and Europe) will work together extensively on challenging problems proposed by companies. This year the KB has also provided a case: ARTificial Intelligence for Simplified Texts (ARTIST). During the ICT with Industry workshop we aim to explore the possibilities to make news articles, books and other publications more accessible to people with low literacy by applying AI techniques to automatically rewrite publications. This means they face challenges to fully participate in today’s society. Recently we have seen this problem when people with low-level literacy received invitations for the COVID- 19 vaccines that were too complicated for them. But also understanding the news by reading news articles in the newspaper or websites can be difficult making it hard to understand current issues. The KB, national library of the Netherlands, aims to make all publications available to all Dutch citizens, including people who have reading disabilities. In this use case we propose to explore the possibilities to make news articles, books and other publications more accessible to people with low literacy by applying AI techniques to automatically rewrite publications. In the Netherlands, several initiatives have been undertaken to manually make books or news articles more accessible. However, this is very labour intensive and only makes a small selection of publications available for illiterates. During the ICT with Industry workshop we aim to explore several methods to automatically rewrite news articles/book, making them available for all Dutch citizens.

EFI has responsibility for delivering six major programmes linked to the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal: a multi-million pound investment by the UK and Scottish Government, aiming to attract inward investment, support skills development and entrepreneurship, with the aim of securing economic prosperity for all. The focus of EFI’s programmes are: creative industries; tourism and festivals; financial services (including fintech); public services; the ethics of data and artificial intelligence; and future infrastructure. The Institute is appointing a cohort of Chancellor’s Fellows over 2020/21 and 2021/22 to help drive research and innovation and support the development and delivery of its portfolio of postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. To support cross-University collaboration, each of these posts will be located in one of the University’s 21 Schools. The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is part of the College of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. It is co-located in a completely refurbished 'A' listed building designed by the distinguished Scottish architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in the nineteenth century, with state of the art facilities for staff and students. The School combines the expertise of the departments of History, Classics and Archaeology along with the Centre for the Study of Modern and Contemporary History, the Edinburgh Centre for Global History and the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Dear Colleagues, Now available online: a digital edition of Anne Frank's Diary and all her other manuscripts, at https://annefrankmanuscripten.org/. The present edition is in Dutch. A translation into English will follow in about a year's time. The edition was built using TEI-XML. Unfortunately, the edition is only accessible in countries where Anne Frank's texts are in the public domain. These include, to name a few, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Israel and Japan. The edition is not available in other countries, such as the UK, the USA and the Netherlands. PhD position (or Postdoc) in Computational Literary Studies at University of Stuttgart

The Institute for Natural Language Processing (IMS) at University of Stuttgart has an opening for a doctoral researcher (or a postdoc) in the context of project CAUTION [1] to work on the operationalization of concepts from the field of narratology and on tools for computer-aided analysis of a corpus of literary texts. CAUTION is a collaboration between literary studies and computational linguistics, headed by Janina Jacke (University of Göttingen) and Jonas Kuhn (University of Stuttgart) [2], which addresses the phenomenon of unreliable narration in fiction. The project aims to advance the representational means for capturing this phenomenon, to devise a framework for intersubjectively stable annotation in texts, and to develop computational tools for automatically detecting signals for unreliable narration in a corpus. The project is funded by DFG (the German Research Foundation) and is associated with the Priority Programme SPP 2207 Computational Literary Studies. The successful candidate will work (i) on the detection of text properties signaling unreliable narration using data-driven techniques from natural language processing (NLP) and (ii) on capturing systematically what reasoning leads a reader to consider the narrator of a story to be unreliable, using a symbolic knowledge representation & reasoning framework. Specifically, the project explores how the interaction between story-internal knowledge and background knowledge from various sources can be formalized in a belief-desire-intention model for intelligent agents and how such a formalization can be integrated with the practice of text annotation. An important element of the project will be a close exchange between theoretical research in literary studies and research on algorithmic modeling techniques. The candidate must have a Master's degree in computational linguistics, computer science, digital humanities, or similar. Familiarity with the data-driven modeling paradigm in current NLP research, programming skills and experience in running and evaluating corpus-based modeling experiments are a prerequisite. A reading knowledge of German is desirable, since we work on a corpus of German texts. Some background in digital humanities on the one hand, and in knowledge representation & reasoning, declarative programming (e.g. Prolog) and/or multi-agent systems on the other hand would be a plus. IMS Stuttgart offers an inspiring environment for interdisciplinary work on algorithmic text analysis in a range of research contexts; several groups work on digital humanities and computational social science projects. The position will be available for three years, starting in November 2021. The workshop continues a long tradition of annual meetings. The SIGHUM Workshops on Language Technology for Cultural Heritage, Social Sciences, and Humanities (LaTeCH) ran from 2007 to 2016. The ACL Workshops on Computational Linguistics for Literature (CLfL) took place from 2012 to 2016. The first four joint workshops (LaTeCH-CLfL) were held from 2017 to 2020. Topics and Content In the Humanities, Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage and literary communities, there is increasing interest in, and demand for, NLP methods for semantic and structural annotation, intelligent linking, discovery, querying, cleaning and visualization of both primary and secondary data. This is even true of primarily non-textual collections, given that text is also the pervasive medium for metadata. Such applications pose new challenges for NLP research: noisy, non-standard textual or multi-modal input, historical languages, vague research concepts, multilingual parts within one document, and so no. Digital resources often have insufficient coverage; resource-intensive methods require (semi-)automatic processing tools and domain adaptation, or intense manual effort (e.g., annotation). Literary texts bring their own problems, because navigating this form of creative expression requires more than the typical information-seeking tools. Examples of advanced tasks include the study of literature of a certain period, author or sub-genre, recognition of certain literary devices, or quantitative analysis of poetry. NLP methods applied in this context not only need to achieve high performance, but are often applied as a first step in research or scholarly workflow. That is why it is crucial to interpret model results properly; model interpretability might be more important than raw performance scores, depending on the context. More generally, there is a growing interest in computational models whose results can be used or interpreted in meaningful ways. It is, therefore, of mutual benefit that NLP experts, data specialists and Digital Humanities researchers who work in and across their domains get involved in the Computational Linguistics community and present their fundamental or applied research results. It has already been demonstrated how cross-disciplinary exchange not only supports work in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Cultural Heritage communities but also promotes work in the Computational Linguistics community to build richer and more effective tools and models. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: • adaptation of NLP tools to Cultural Heritage, Social Sciences, Humanities and literature; • automatic error detection and cleaning of textual data; • complex annotation schemas, tools and interfaces; • creation (fully- or semi-automatic) of semantic resources; • creation and analysis of social networks of literary characters; • discourse and narrative analysis/modelling, notably in literature; • emotion analysis for the humanities and for literature; • generation of literary narrative, dialogue or poetry; • identification and analysis of literary genres; • linking and retrieving information from different sources, media, and domains; • modelling dialogue literary style for generation; • modelling of information and knowledge in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Cultural Heritage; • profiling and authorship attribution; • search for scientific and/or scholarly literature; • work with linguistic variation and non-standard or historical use of language. Information for Authors We invite papers on original, unpublished work in the topic areas of the workshop. In addition to long papers, we will consider short papers and system descriptions (demos). We also welcome position papers. • Long papers, presenting completed work, may consist of up to eight (8) pages of content plus additional pages of references; final camera-ready versions of accepted long papers will be given one additional page of content (up to 9 pages) so that reviewers’ comments can be taken into account. • A short paper / demo can present work in progress, or the description of a system, and may consist of up to four (4) pages of content plus additional pages of references. Upon acceptance, short papers will be given five (5) content pages in the proceedings. • A position paper — clearly marked as such — should not exceed six (6) pages including references. All submissions are to use the EMNLP stylesheets (for LaTeX / Overleaf and MS Word), to be announced soon at https://2021.emnlp.org/call-for-papers/. Within this project we investigate the impact fiction can have on readers. We use a large corpus of electronically available Dutch-language (original and translated) novels and a large collection of online book reviews. The aim of the project is to translate concepts of literary theory about how literature works into a computational form suitable for computational analysis of books and book reviews. EADH 2022 Call for Hosts The EADH Executive Committee invites proposals for Local Organisers (LO) to host the 2022 EADH Conference. The EADH Conference is organised each year that the annual ADHO Digital Humanities conference takes place outside of Europe, and has the objective to strengthen the scientific, institutional and cultural relations between the members of the DH communities in Europe and the Mediterranean area. EADH is particularly interested in proposals from institutions and regions that: • Have recently developed or are developing digital humanities communities and organizations; • Have not previously hosted an ADHO or the EADH Digital Humanities conference. Please note that the lead applicant must be a direct member of the EADH or of one of its Associate Organisations (currently AIUCD [Italy], DHD [Germany], DHN [Nordic Countries], CzADH [Czechia], and DH Russia). Organisation EADH Conferences are co-organised by two committees: The scientific organisation is conducted by a Programme Committee (PC) between 8 and 14 members and one Chair, appointed by the EADH Executive Committee. The local organiser may appoint up to two members of the PC. The PC decides the main theme of the conference, identifies and invites keynote speakers, produces and issues the Call for Papers, manages the review process, and decides the academic conference programme. The logistical organization will be the responsibility of a Local Organisation Committee, whose members and chair are appointed by the Local Organisers. Time Period and Venue Conference dates are decided by the Local Organiser, in consultation with EADH Executive committee. It is recommended that the conference takes place in the autumn of 2022. Other large DH-related conferences in Europe should be taken into account when fixing the precise dates. The venue must be an academic or cultural institution in the European and Mediterranean area in its broadest sense. The hosting institution should be able to accommodate a minimum of 300 delegates (including plenaries), at least three parallel sessions, and a communicative poster session. The Local Organizers must also have the infrastructure and organizational staff to guarantee online access to delegates and speakers. The availability of accommodations at accessible prices is an element that will be considered in the evaluation of the bid. Bids Bids should contain a preliminary budget and up to two pages describing the motivations and logistical opportunities offered by the proposed venue. Bidders must take into account the EADH diversity and inclusivity statement and the ADHO code of conduct. The venue for the 2022 conference will be decided by the EADH Executive Committee on the basis of: • Academic and social impact of the conference for the LO; • Logistical and economical adequacy of the venue (including costs of accommodations and availability of a childcare program); • The overall quality of the proposal. Bids should be submitted to secretary(a)eadh.org and CC to fabio.ciotti(a)uniroma2.it no later than June 30, 2021. Structure of the Conference The Conference should be a 2/3-day event, avoiding weekends. Workshops and training events can precede the official conference days, depending on the availability of the LO. Presentations will be organized in 90-minute slots. The conference should have two keynote plenary talks. Typical presentations are: • Long papers for theoretical or highly relevant methodological or technical issues; • Short papers to present research ideas, approaches and projects; • Panel or roundtable for one relevant topic discussed under different perspectives by 5/6 presenters; • Posters. One session of the conference is reserved for short poster presentations. Bidders in coordination with the Programme Committee are encouraged to propose alternative formats and innovative organization of the conference in addition to this general framework. Budget The conference must be financially self-sustaining or create a small surplus. Surpluses and deficits for conference finances are distributed at a ratio to EADH and to the local organizer according to this formula: 60% ADHO / 40% LOs. In case of loss, EADH backstop funding will not exceed €5,000. The EADH will also provide bursaries for young scholars. At least 50% of ADHO’s share of surpluses will be earmarked specifically for future conference travel bursaries and other pro-inclusion actions. The local organizers are expected to set six levels of registration fees: • Faculty and staff with a permanent contract, members of the EADH, associate organizations, and other constituent organizations of ADHO; • Faculty and staff with a permanent contract, non-members; • Faculty and staff with a fixed-term contract, members of the EADH, associate organizations, and other constituent organizations of ADHO; • Faculty and staff with a fixed-term contract, non-members; • Students, members of the EADH, associate organizations, and other constituent organizations of ADHO; • Students, non-members. Local Organisers are expected to set member/non-member rates so that the difference between member/non-member rates are higher than the EADH membership costs. Registration fees are recommended not to exceed €300 for the highest level of non-member fees to make the conference more accessible to the community. Social Programme Local Organisers are expected to arrange a diverse social programme, including a social dinner, that can contribute to the EADH community building. Usually, this social programme will highlight the local culture of the conference venue. Synergies and Possible Sponsorship Suggested collaborative activities range from hosting of workshops and tutorials to co-organisation of the conference or financial support. Such technologies have the potential to bring a wide range of benefits, blending advanced functionality with the physical environment. However, they also have the potential to drive real-world consequences through decisions, interactions, or actuations, and there is a real risk that their use can lead to harms, such as physical injuries, financial loss, or even death. These concerns appear ever-more prevalent, as a growing sense of distrust has led to calls for *more transparency and accountability* surrounding the development and use of emerging technologies. A range of things can—and often do—go wrong, be they technical failure, user error, or otherwise. As such, means for the ability to *review, understand and act upon* the inner workings of how these systems are built/developed and used are crucial to being able to determine the cause of failures, prevent re-occurrences, and/or to identify parties at fault. Yet, despite the wider landscape of societal and legal pressures for record keeping and increased accountability (e.g. GDPR and CCPA), implementing transparency measures face a range of challenges. This calls for different thinking into how we can better understand (interpret) the emerging technologies that pervade our world. As such, this workshop aims to explore new ideas into the nascent topic, collating some of the outstanding challenges and potential solutions to implementing more meaningful transparency throughout pervasive systems. Is the same happening in the world of digital scholarly editing? Certainly we cannot ignore their fundamental role in our daily scholarly practices and in the interactions with our objects of study. Insofar as tools shape scholarly editions, they also shape scholarly editing. A new RIDE issue is devoted to tools for digital scholarly editing. The aim of this issue is to: - contribute to the discussion about tooling in Digital Humanities, - bring to the forefront the instruments instead of the final products, - provide a venue for discussing best practices in the development and usage of tools, - list useful resources for all those involved in scholarly editing. Beyond that, we hope that the critical examination of digital tools draws greater attention to the (scholarly) achievements that their creation and maintenance imply. The journal *RIDE* was founded in 2014 to “provide a forum in which expert peers criticise and discuss the efforts of digital editors in order to improve current practices and advance future developments” (RIDE Editorial). RIDE is Open Access, reviews are published as HTML and downloadable as TEI. All reviews will be peer reviewed in order to reach a high quality level of the evaluations. The special issue on Digital Tools and Environments for DSE will be edited by Anna-Maria Sichani (University of Sussex) and Elena Spadini (University of Lausanne). *Submission details* Reviews are accepted in English, French, Italian, and Spanish. The length of the review can vary depending on how much the resource offers that is worthy of discussion (approximately 2000-5000 words). Please submit your review at *ride-tools (at) i-d-e.de <http://i-d-e.de/>* as an editable text file (preferably, but not necessarily docx to facilitate the conversion to TEI). Please send illustrations as separate image files (jpg or png) and leave a note in the text as a placeholder for each image. In addition to the text, we collect keywords. Each review should be accompanied by a short abstract in English, independently of the language used in the main text. The questionnaire mentioned in the submission checklist has been designed for scholarly digital editions so far. 1st Shared Task on Scene Segmentation in German Narratives We invite contributions to the 1st Shared Task on automatic Scene Segmentation (STSS) for German narrative texts. Scenes are time-, location- and plot-wise coherent units of a story, and can predominantly be found in narrative texts like novels or biographies. Scene segmentation is needed for a high-level content analysis of longer texts, but also for many subsequent tasks for NLP applied in longer narrative texts, since even modern methods struggle with processing text longer than a couple of sentences or paragraphs. Day of DH is a way to show how digital humanities happens in many different ways and is practised by a varied group of people. This Day of DH comes after a year of living in the virtual space and for that, it is more special. We have had a year of seeing human life and technology intersect intimately and seen its affordances and its limitations come to the fore virtual meeting after virtual meeting. So #dayofdh2021 provides us with an opportunity to share and reflect upon how a global pandemic changed DH, its directions, your research questions, and more. *The day of DH 2021 will take place on April 29.* This year the organizing committee is led by Loyola University Chicago and UCLA in the USA, the University of Guelph in Canada, and Università del Piemonte Orientale in Italy. Day of DH 2021 theme is MULTILINGUAL DH. 11th EUROPEAN SUMMER UNIVERSITY IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES "CULTURE & TECHNOLOGY" - 3 to 13 August 2021 UNIVERSITY OF LEIPZIG The 11th European Summer University in Digital Humanities "Culture & Technology"[1] (ESU DH C&T) takes place at the University of Leipzig from 3 to 13 August 2021. It is organised by the Institute for Romance Studies[2] together with the Forum Digital Humanities Leipzig[3] (FDHL). As soon as other scholarships are confirmed, we will send out a separate announcement. The Summer University is directed at 60 participants from all over Europe and beyond. It wants to bring together (doctoral) students, young scholars and academics from the Arts and Humanities, Library Sciences, Social Sciences, the Arts and Engineering and Computer Sciences as equal partners to an interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and experience in a multilingual and multicultural context and thus create the conditions for future project-based co-operations. The Leipzig Summer University is special because it not only seeks to offer a space for the discussion and acquisition of new knowledge, skills and competences in those computer technologies which play a central role in Humanities Computing and which determine every day more and more the work done in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences, as well as in publishing, libraries, and archives etc., but because it tries to integrate also linguistics with the Digital Humanities, which pose questions about the consequences and implications of the application of computational methods and tools to cultural artefacts of all kinds. It is special furthermore because it consciously aims at confronting the so-called Gender Divide, i.e. the under-representation of women in the domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Germany, Europe and many parts of the world, by relying on the challenges that the Humanities with their complex data and their wealth of women represent for Computer Science and Engineering and the further development of the latter, on the overcoming of the borders between the so-called hard and soft sciences and on the integration of Humanities, Computer Science and Engineering.
