The Unicode Consortium will be holding a webinar on “Documenting and Preserving Languages with Unicode: A Talk on Character Encoding, Keyboards, and Fonts” on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. The presenters are Dr. Deborah Anderson (Chair, Unicode Script Ad Hoc and Project Lead, Script Encoding Initiative, Dept. of Linguistics, UC Berkeley) and Dr. Andrew Glass (Chair of Unicode CLDR Keyboards Subcommittee). Abstract: The Unicode Standard is the basis of electronic communication today on computers and devices, and hence is fundamental to documenting and preserving languages and the scripts used to write them. But understanding how Unicode is structured, how characters and scripts are added, and how to get characters on keyboards and in fonts can be challenging. This webinar on character encoding, keyboards, and fonts is geared to language practitioners and users generally. It will provide an overview of Unicode, explain how characters are organized in Unicode and how to propose new characters, and discuss accessing the characters on keyboards and fonts. From 25 to 28 September 2023, we would like to discuss different approaches to the topic in two formats: 1. An Open Space Day, where experts will report on their research projects and subsequently discuss aspects of their work with the audience. This part of the program is open to all who are interested. 2. A three-day workshop, where the participants will get the opportunity to present and discuss their strategies for dealing with uncertainty within their own research projects. Formulaic Language in Historical Research and Data Extraction: An International Conference CALL FOR PAPERS Huygens Institute, Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences Amsterdam, 7-9 February 2024 Formulaic language is a phenomenon familiar to scholars working with a great variety of historical sources. In official documents such as charters, acts, laws, ordinances, proceedings, but also in ‘private’ texts such as letters, petitions, egodocuments, and literary texts, we find (sequences of) words that appear over and over again, often in the same position in the text, over a long period of time. Such formulaic elements seem to fulfill many different functions: they may help the reader understand the type or genre of a text, structure the text, indicate its performative character, strengthen the relationship between author and reader, or help memorizing a text, to name but a few. Given the highly formulaic character of many written sources, especially (but not only) of the premodern period, the phenomenon of formulaic language has received surprisingly little attention in historical research. It has been studied in (socio)linguistics and historical pragmatics, but few historians have engaged with this scholarship. Until recently, moreover, the potential of formulaic language for (automated) data extraction of large digitized source corpora has remained virtually unexplored. The twofold aim of this international conference is: 1. to place formulaic language on the agenda as an object of historical study (in the broadest, interdisciplinary sense of this term) 2. to explore the potential of formulaic language for the digitization and data extraction of historical sources of different types and periods. Possible questions that we would like to address in this conference include: • What is formulaic language? In which societal domains and historical sources can it be found? When and why has language been considered formulaic, and by whom? How is formulaic language defined and studied in different academic fields? How does the use of formulaic language vary across (national) linguistic traditions and across space and time? • How has formulaic language historically been understood? Which purposes has it served? How, when and where has formulaic language emerged, transferred or disappeared? How has formulaic language evolved over time, and how can change be explained? How does formulaic language in written texts relate to speech acts and ritual performances? How does it relate to text genres and genre conventions? • What are the social and political connotations and consequences of formulaic language? Who produces it, who engages with it, who knows how to use it, and who is excluded by it? How do (political, religious, legal) authorities, intermediaries, and ordinary language users employ, exploit, and interpret formulaic language? Does formulaic language facilitate or hinder the participation of subaltern groups in society? What is the relationship between formulaic language and the subsequent transitions from oral to written culture to the age of print and the digital age, or with processes of standardization, professionalization, and bureaucratization? • How can formulas be used to extract information from texts? What information do formulaic expressions convey about the subject or meaning of a text? Can they play a role in recognizing and contextualizing named entities? Can they help to link texts with other texts? • How can formulaic language be identified in text corpora and archives, including long serial publications and heterogeneous archives of diverse documents? How can formulaic expressions be categorized and how can relationships between formulas be identified? We welcome proposals for papers (c. 250 words) on these and related topics from scholars working in different fields. Proposals should be sent, together with a short bio- bibliographical statement including indication of institutional affiliation, by 15 June, to Republic_Goetgevonden(a)huygens.knaw.nl. Dino was a member of the Executive of EADH and President and co-founder of AIUCD, the Italian digital humanities association that first became an Associate Organization of EADH, also and especially at his behest. We are looking for seminars on any aspect of the ancient or pre-colonial worlds, including history, archaeology, language, literature, cultural heritage or reception, that address innovative digital approaches to research, teaching, dissemination or engagement. Seminars that speak to the ancient world beyond Greco-Roman antiquity are especially welcome. Seminars will be held fortnightly through June and July in the Institute of Classical Studies, Senate House, London, and will be simultaneously streamed to remote audiences on Youtube, but we hope most speakers will be physically present in London. CHANGE stands for Chatbots in Higher Education – KI-basierte Dialogsysteme in der Hochschullehre. In the CHANGE project, the University Education Services (Hochschuldidaktik & Lehrentwicklung), the Data Science Lab, and the Digital Humanities are collaborating to investigate the successful integration of AI-based dialogue systems into university teaching. The project has two main areas: First, the development of higher education didactic concepts, models, and methods to support integrating digital dialogue systems into higher education teaching. Second, the development of digital dialog systems for university teaching. The innovations will be tested in the university's ongoing teaching operations and further developed using design-based research methods. The Ph.D. position is part of the second sub-project. We are happy to announce the first edition of DH4MA, the International workshop on tangible and intangible heritage digitization to promote marginal areas and rural development. Title DH4MA - (Digital Humanities for Marginal Areas) About The Digital Humanities for Marginal Areas (DH4MA) workshop aims to investigate the state of the art of tangible and intangible heritage digitization in marginal and rural areas and their accessibility. DH4MA will be held in conjunction with the DH2023 conference <https://dh2023.adho.org/> and is organized in the framework of the KiNESIS Erasmus+ project <https://www.kinesis-network.eu/homesite/1/1/home-page.html>. The digital divide issue affects several areas all over the world, including those that despite being part of the most developed countries, are behind the times of the digital revolution. Museums, libraries and centres of culture located in these areas often cannot foster their cultural heritage. In light of the above, Digital Humanities (DH) techniques represent an opportunity not to be missed to raise awareness of their cultural heritage and to overcome the digital divide. The consciousness of the digital divide, poor visibility and the need to improve communication strategies emerged during the covid-19 lockdown, when several cultural institutions made their cultural heritage available online (Cicerchia et al., 2021; Agostino et al., 2020; Fresh, 2021), allowing people to enjoy it in a new different way (e.g. Guggenheim Museum of New York <https://www.guggenheim.org/group-visits>, The Paul Getty Museum of Los Angeles <https://artsandculture.google.com/streetview/the-j-paul-getty-museum/cwFdGY…>, The Uffizi Gallery of Florence <https://www.virtualuffizi.com/map-%26-virtual-tour.html>, The Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam <https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/masterpieces-up-close>). Nevertheless, small centres of culture were not able to offer their collections online. Only a few of them were able to make a real revolution (Roblek et al., 2021), also by exploiting cooperation between only seemingly distant disciplines (e.g. computer science and librarians, humanists and game creators) to promote tangible and intangible heritage. Topics of interest Relevant topics for the DH4MA workshop include, but are not limited to, the following areas: - Cultural heritage digitization in marginal and rural areas; - Best practices to reduce the digital divide in marginal and rural areas; - Investigation and evaluation of the degree of digitization in marginal and rural areas; - DH techniques to promote cultural heritage; - Promoting cultural heritage through gamification techniques; - Research cooperation between people/teams with different expertise to promote cultural heritage; - Research projects aiming to reduce the digital divide; - Research projects aimed at promoting cultural heritage through cooperation between scholars and local associations Research questions Bringing together scholars dealing with different research fields, the DH4MA aims to answer (not only) the following questions: - Do exist examples of tangible and intangible heritage digitization that can be defined as best practices? - Which are the best strategies implemented at the global level to reduce the digital divide between marginal and rural areas and most developed areas? - Which are the best examples of cultural heritage promotion through the collaboration between people/teams with different backgrounds? - Is it possible to consider cultural heritage promotion through DH techniques as an opportunity to fight the depopulation phenomenon? How? Submission instructions Contributions must be submitted in English and represent original and unpublished work that is not currently under review. Contributions will be evaluated by the Program Committee according to their significance, originality, technical content, style, clarity, and relevance to the DH4MA workshop. Ethical Responsibilities and 3D Practices in Cultural Heritage Digital Humanities Research Hub, University of London, Tuesday May 9, 2023. The goal of this workshop is to collect, aggregate and synthesise existing work on ethical issues around 3D methods, and discuss with professionals and experts other issues that should be covered. The core output will be a dynamic white paper, to make available guidance and references to future researchers and practitioners. All participants will be invited (with no obligation) to join us in drafting and co-authoring this documentation after the event. The workshop will be in-person, with the possibility of remote participation via video conferencing and collaborative workflow tools. All the best, Simone Rebora (for the SIG-DLS steering committee) === *DH2023 Workshop – SIG-DLS Seven Years on* Seven years have passed since the constitution of the ADHO Special Interest Group “Digital Literary Stylistics” (SIG-DLS). In the meantime, the research field has changed, with the advent of new methodologies (drawing on the constantly growing field of computational linguistics) and the affirmation of emerging theories and definitions (such as the modeling paradigm in “computational literary studies”). At the same time, some aspects and reference points have remained the same, such as the confirmed success of frequency-based approaches and the pivotal role of statistical methods. With this workshop, we would like to provide a renewed overview of the field of Digital Literary Stylistics, in ideal dialogue with the seminal workshop organized at DH2016, which allowed the constitution of the SIG-DLS. It can also illuminate broader relationships between museums, society, and the wider Creative and Cultural Industries (e.g. Me|Mind, 2021), to help produce more joined-up cultural policy and strategy (Centre for Cultural Value, 2022). We are happy to announce the first edition of DH4MA, the International workshop on tangible and intangible heritage digitization to promote marginal areas and rural development. Title DH4MA - (Digital Humanities for Marginal Areas) About The Digital Humanities for Marginal Areas (DH4MA) workshop aims to investigate the state of the art of tangible and intangible heritage digitization in marginal and rural areas and their accessibility. DH4MA will be held in conjunction with the DH2023 conference <https://dh2023.adho.org/> and is organized in the framework of the KiNESIS Erasmus+ project <https://www.kinesis-network.eu/homesite/1/1/home-page.html>. The digital divide issue affects several areas all over the world, including those that despite being part of the most developed countries, are behind the times of the digital revolution. Museums, libraries and centres of culture located in these areas often cannot foster their cultural heritage. In light of the above, Digital Humanities (DH) techniques represent an opportunity not to be missed to raise awareness of their cultural heritage and to overcome the digital divide. The consciousness of the digital divide, poor visibility and the need to improve communication strategies emerged during the covid-19 lockdown, when several cultural institutions made their cultural heritage available online (Cicerchia et al., 2021; Agostino et al., 2020; Fresh, 2021), allowing people to enjoy it in a new different way (e.g. Guggenheim Museum of New York <https://www.guggenheim.org/group-visits>, The Paul Getty Museum of Los Angeles <https://artsandculture.google.com/streetview/the-j-paul-getty-museum/cwFdGY…>, The Uffizi Gallery of Florence <https://www.virtualuffizi.com/map-%26-virtual-tour.html>, The Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam <https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/masterpieces-up-close>). Nevertheless, small centres of culture were not able to offer their collections online. Only a few of them were able to make a real revolution (Roblek et al., 2021), also by exploiting cooperation between only seemingly distant disciplines (e.g. computer science and librarians, humanists and game creators) to promote tangible and intangible heritage. Topics of interest Relevant topics for the DH4MA workshop include, but are not limited to, the following areas: - Cultural heritage digitization in marginal and rural areas; - Best practices to reduce the digital divide in marginal and rural areas; - Investigation and evaluation of the degree of digitization in marginal and rural areas; - DH techniques to promote cultural heritage; - Promoting cultural heritage through gamification techniques; - Research cooperation between people/teams with different expertise to promote cultural heritage; - Research projects aiming to reduce the digital divide; - Research projects aimed at promoting cultural heritage through cooperation between scholars and local associations Research questions Bringing together scholars dealing with different research fields, the DH4MA aims to answer (not only) the following questions: - Do exist examples of tangible and intangible heritage digitization that can be defined as best practices? - Which are the best strategies implemented at the global level to reduce the digital divide between marginal and rural areas and most developed areas? - Which are the best examples of cultural heritage promotion through the collaboration between people/teams with different backgrounds? - Is it possible to consider cultural heritage promotion through DH techniques as an opportunity to fight the depopulation phenomenon? How? Submission instructions Contributions must be submitted in English and represent original and unpublished work that is not currently under review. Submissions may focus on specific case studies or theories of new emerging practices, rhetorical analyses, or methodological reflections that take inspiration from fields such as book history, digital humanities and/or media studies. Topics include, but not limited to: • Authorship: Contextualising the production of hypertexts. • Book history: Historically-informed frameworks, theories, and concepts for understanding hypertextual production, dissemination, and reception. • Digital scholarly editions and adaptations: Hypertextual representations and reconceptualisations of extant texts. • Digital storytelling and electronic literature: How hypertexts are used to communicate ideas and facilitate alternative textual experiences. • Reading practices and reader response: How hypertexts are read (or not read) and interpreted. • Rhetorics and poetics: How hypertexts are framed in popular and scholarly discourse, as well as theoretical considerations on forms of expression supported by hypertextual formats. • Text, paratext, and multimodality: Manifestations and effects of digital forms of intra- and intertextual connectivity., Workflows and Infrastructures Track chair Dr Davide Picca (Université de Lausanne, CH) This track is dedicated to hypertext systems and their professional applications to the GLAM field in order to facilitate access to cultural knowledge. The main purpose is to illustrate through the different contributions to the track, how STEM disciplines can help and support the preservation and dissemination of tangible and intangible cultural resources. This track welcomes contributions that present real-world applications of hypertext systems, with a focus on the benefits, challenges, and gaps that emerge from daily practice in fields of study such as (but not limited to) Digital Museology, Intangible Cultural Heritage applications and NLP approaches to cultural resources. Topics include, but not limited to: • Semantic knowledge: How formal ontologies and formal modelling can contribute to organise cultural knowledge • GLAM applications: Pipelines and digital curations for restoration and preservation of cultural artefacts • Digital Museology: Innovations, trends as well as practical challenges encountered in the fields of museology • Intangible Cultural Heritage applications: How Big Data workflows and digital transformation methods can be applied to cultural objects • NLP approaches to cultural resources: Computational semantics and pragmatics, machine translation and multilingual NLP for cultural objects Social and Intelligent Media Track chair Dr Grégoire Burel (Knowledge Media Institute, UK) The social and intelligent media track is dedicated to the understanding and modelling of sociotechnical systems and their role in shaping communication and information access, both virtually and offline. Submissions should consider any online systems that include socially and AI-mediated information such as social networks, recommender systems, online publication tools and discussion platforms. As the focus of this year conference is “Humanity within”, authors are encouraged to submit interdisciplinary articles centred around the impact of social media and AI on how hyperlinked content is accessed and consumed and its impact on Humanity. This track welcomes submissions that further the understanding of the technical inworkings of digital communities and their societal impact, as well as novel methods and algorithms that shape online communication, content creation and socially-mediated information access. Topics include, but not limited to: • Privacy and Anonymity in Social Media – The way social media protect and/or blur the lines between the real and virtual world. • Inclusiveness of Social Media – The role of social media in including minorities, disabilities and minoritised communities. • Diversity and Representativeness of Social Media – The way social media favour (or not) content diversity and its representativeness as well as the involvement of individuals (e.g., echo chambers, content moderation). • Immersive Social Media (e.g., metaverse) – The development and impact of new interaction paradigms on real-world interactions and online communication. • Network Effects in Social Media – The impact of social and hyperlink ties on content access and distribution e.g., information access, ranking, misinformation and bot networks). • Social Media Algorithms – The structure, development, design, and analysis of social media platforms and algorithms. Reflections and Approaches Track chair Dr Mariusz Pisarski (University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszow, PL) This track considers how hypertext has transformed society and its tools: new perspectives, future directions, and ongoing transformations that challenge our assumptions about hypertext. This track welcomes submissions focused on (but not limited to) critical reflection on the evolution of hypertext systems, paradigms for new hypertext applications, as well as theories for understanding and navigating the complexity of digital communities enabled by hypertext design and systems. Topics include, but not limited to: • Histories of hypertext: hypertext systems in critical discourse, technology discourse and in the arts community. • Histories of social media: how the pioneering formulas of early systems – such as BBS, MUD and email discussion groups – evolved to modern social media. • Designs, paradigms and theories: evolution of hypertext in scholarly and artistic practice • Self-reflectivity of systems: historical impact of one hypertext system upon another; remediations, migrations and borrowings of features in contemporary writing/reading platforms • Visual histories and meta-histories of social media and hypertext: hypertext and social media communities and ideas in visual and big-data analysis. Dear All, The LiLa: Linking Latin team invites you to participate to the LiLa Project Closing Event, consisting in a workshop taking place at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy, on 25th-26th of May, 2023. More information about the workshop, including a detailed programme, can be found at: https://lila-erc.eu/events-2/lila-closing-event/ LiLa responds to the growing need in the fields of Computational Linguistics, Humanities Computing and Classics to create an interoperable Knowledge Base of linguistic resources and NLP tools for Latin. To this end, LiLa makes use of Linked Open Data (LOD) practices and standards to connect words to textual and lexical resources currently distributed across the web. The purpose of this workshop is to present the results of five years of work on the LiLa project and to bring together scholars responsible for the creation and development of linguistic resources and NLP tools for Latin that have been linked and integrated in the LiLa Knowledge Base. Dear all, On behalf of the voting members of the European Summer University in Digital Humanities 2023 Evaluative Committee, I am pleased to announce that the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania has been selected as the future host for ESU 2023-2025. We are thrilled that Christian Schuster, the director of the Transylvania Digital Humanities Center there, and Alexandra Cotoc, a former ESU community member, will join an impressive team from across the university to provide the ESU with a new intellectual home. The Evaluative Committee had the difficult task of selecting from an extremely competitive pool of candidates, a testament to the strength of the ESU over the years and to Elisabeth Burr’s extraordinary leadership. I thank each one of the committee members for their time, their thoughtful insights, and the collegiality with which they approached this process. We hope that you will encourage your colleagues and your students to join us in Cluj-Napoca this summer for the next chapter in the European Summer University in Digital Humanities.
