Research rarely begins with manual browsing in archives, but rather on the Internet. Extending the legacy of quantitative history pioneered by the Annales School, quantitative methods such as distant reading complement established methods such as close reading and discourse analysis, and are becoming increasingly important as digital collections grow. AI systems like ChatGPT create new opportunities and challenges regarding text production and source analysis. Digital literacy and algorithmic criticism are one way of responding to this shift. Both students and researchers need to be trained and sensitized to the new demands and possibilities of digital research practice. Digital tools and methods are being integrated into history education to provide students with a solid foundation for their future research activities. Research collaborations need to be rethought under the conditions of digitization, etc. Within this general context, a lot of questions need urgently to be discussed. What are the basic elements of data literacy which every historian should know about? What is algorithmic criticism and how can it be practiced in our every-day research routines? How do we manage the data we produce during the research process? Which criteria (if any) should we use to choose a software for a specific task? Where to find help when faced with a methodological or a computer problem – or a combination of both? How to set up interdisciplinary collaborations? How do we handle technologies that some of their inventors construct as ‹black boxes›? How can we deal with the rapidly increasing demand for very different resources (e.g. technical knowledge, computing power, money)? etc. The conference provides a platform for scholars, researchers and professionals of all ages and levels of experience to discuss these challenges, exchange experiences, share best practices, and discuss forward-looking approaches to historical research in the digital age. It aims to promote digital literacy, raise awareness of the use of algorithms and AI systems, develop strategies for dealing with digital sources, encourage shared formats and methodologies, and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices for collaborative historical research. The conference will also showcase projects and research in the field of digital history. It is planned that a selection of the papers presented at the conference will be published in a peer-reviewed open access publication. This is the first in a series of conferences that should take place every two years at a different Swiss university. *RIDE Call for Reviews: Crowd Editions* The Institute for Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE) is calling for reviews dedicated to crowd edited and peer sourced Digital Scholarly Editions (DSE). A publication of the reviews is planned in the online review journal for digital editions and resources RIDE under the topic “Crowd Edited Digital Scholarly Editions”. We are inviting reviews of such Digital Scholarly Editions from all Humanities disciplines. “Crowd edited” is understood in a broad sense: It describes a form of digitally enabled participation in the tasks that the creation and publication of a digital scholarly edition entail. It can imply that typical tasks, e.g., transcription, collation, annotation, (cross-)linking, or commentary, are “crowd sourced” or “peer sourced”, that means undertaken by a casual group of committed persons, through a publicly accessible platform. It can also imply that the edition is completely created by an independent public user group, e.g., on a social media platform (“social edition”). Call for Nominations: ADHO Roberto Busa Prize The Roberto Busa Prize is an award of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organisations (ADHO). It is named in honour of Father Roberto Busa, the first pioneer of humanities computing, who in 1949 began experiments in linguistic automation, with the support of the IBM offices in New York and Milan, as part of his analytical research on the writings of Thomas Aquinas. The computational work was central to the thirty years of research whose published output was the 56-volume Index Thomisticus, completed in 1980. The Busa award is given to recognise outstanding lifetime achievements in the application of information and communications technologies to humanities research. The award is given every three years, alternating with other ADHO awards, such as the Zampolli award. The first award was given to Father Busa himself in 1998. Subsequent winners have been John Burrows (2001) Susan Hockey (2004) Wilhelm Ott (2007) Joe Raben (2010) Willard McCarty (2013) and Helen Agüera (2016). While early discussions revolved around academic integrity, universities have begun to shift their attention to the role of generative AI in the research enterprise. Susan D'Agostino is a Spencer Education Journalism Fellow at Columbia University where she is working on long-form articles and a book examining the acceleration of artificial intelligence applications in U.S. university life, including the potential risks and benefits posed to students and society. Susan is also the technology correspondent at Inside Higher Ed, where she provides substantive analysis on pressing issues facing higher education today for 2.3 million monthly readers. William Mattingly is an innovative Data Scientist with 3+ years of experience in NLP and machine learning. He is a regular instructor at the Constellate Text Analysis Pedagogy Institute, and he has helped the Smithsonian Institution build machine learning and NLP pipelines for classifying archival records. This year, we will focus on an issue that affects the Digital Humanities on all levels: uncertainty. In this context, uncertainty is not understood as something deficient that inevitably makes data-based research within the digital humanities blurry. Instead, uncertainty underscores contingent opportunities to productively explore and develop strategies of dealing with digital research data. Three experts will report on their research projects and share their views on the topic of uncertainty in data-driven research. In an interview format, they will elaborate on topics spanning from modeling digital corpora and scholarly/scientific concepts, questions of accessing digital data in born-digital archives, to strategies of capturing uncertainty in scholarly editions. Research rarely begins with manual browsing in archives, but rather on the Internet. Extending the legacy of quantitative history pioneered by the Annales School, quantitative methods such as distant reading complement established methods such as close reading and discourse analysis, and are becoming increasingly important as digital collections grow. AI systems like ChatGPT create new opportunities and challenges regarding text production and source analysis. Digital literacy and algorithmic criticism are one way of responding to this shift. Both students and researchers need to be trained and sensitized to the new demands and possibilities of digital research practice. Digital tools and methods are being integrated into history education to provide students with a solid foundation for their future research activities. Research collaborations need to be rethought under the conditions of digitization, etc. Within this general context, a lot of questions need urgently to be discussed. What are the basic elements of data literacy which every historian should know about? What is algorithmic criticism and how can it be practiced in our every-day research routines? How do we manage the data we produce during the research process? Which criteria (if any) should we use to choose a software for a specific task? Where to find help when faced with a methodological or a computer problem – or a combination of both? How to set up interdisciplinary collaborations? How do we handle technologies that some of their inventors construct as ‹black boxes›? How can we deal with the rapidly increasing demand for very different resources (e.g. technical knowledge, computing power, money)? etc. The conference provides a platform for scholars, researchers and professionals of all ages and levels of experience to discuss these challenges, exchange experiences, share best practices, and discuss forward-looking approaches to historical research in the digital age. It aims to promote digital literacy, raise awareness of the use of algorithms and AI systems, develop strategies for dealing with digital sources, encourage shared formats and methodologies, and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices for collaborative historical research. The conference will also showcase projects and research in the field of digital history. It is planned that a selection of the papers presented at the conference will be published in a peer-reviewed open access publication. This is the first in a series of conferences that should take place every two years at a different Swiss university. The NFDI consortium Text+, the DFG priority program Computational Literary Studies, and the EU project CLS-Infra have jointly created a survey on criteria for the creation of literary text corpora or collections. It only takes about 10 minutes to answer! https://survey.academiccloud.de/index.php/916873?lang=en The aim of this survey is to ask all researchers who create (digital) literary corpora or collections what information they need and consider for compilation. Currently, catalogs from libraries, archives, and digital platforms do not yet meet researchers' criteria because of different priorities regarding metadata. We want to change this and therefore ask the researchers themselves, for example, whether they are only looking for novels by 19th century French women authors for their corpus or rather what other information besides genre, gender and time period might be important. Of course, this does not mean that these metadata can be added right after the survey, but prioritization helps us to improve research infrastructures and the supply of digital corpora plus metadata. November 2023, Frankfurt am Main Digitization has reached almost all areas of science and scholarship. And even in the cultural sciences and humanities, computers, databases and digital tools are increasingly important. Last year's annual conference "Digital Hermeneutics: Machines, Procedures, Meaning<https://www.fernuni-hagen.de/digitale-hermeneutik/>" of the research cluster digital_culture<https://www.fernuni-hagen.de/forschung/schwerpunkte/digitale-kultur/index.s…> dealt with the theoretical and conceptual challenges inherent in hermeneutic methods, tools, and applications. Following up on these initial theoretical and conceptual results, we now want to address more technical aspects of methods, technologies, tools, and applications supporting Digital Hermeneutics under the title "Digital Hermeneutics II: Sources, Analysis, Interpretation, Annotation, Curation" and take a look at digitally supported hermeneutic research processes and anticipate the future of digitized working practices in the cultural sciences and humanities. Without such digital support systems, it will no longer be possible to index, find, annotate, and curate the ever-growing number of digitally available resources for research data. Digital systems are also already in use for analyzing, indexing, enriching, and annotating multimedia data. But what about systems that support the analysis, annotation, and interpretation of digital research data - thus: representation of hermeneutic methods - and their results as well as supporting machine learning, reasoning, and finally automating the documentation of annotation, interpretation, and understanding? TOPICS OF INTEREST In an exchange between humanities scholars and computer scientists, we want to explore the possibilities and limits of the vision of digitally supported hermeneutics. The following questions should be understood as suggestions for contributions: · Digitization processes bear the risk of information loss or structural shifts and biases. How can these risks be dealt with? · The transformation of sources to data involves coding and enables the enrichment with information. How does one deal with the loss of the original source characteristics? Do standardizations promote a focus on unifying features of different sources or can nuances and deviations also be mapped? · Do the questions and epistemological interests of humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences change the availability, quality, and quantity of sources in the form of data? · How can algorithms and tools support, possibly even expand, research questions and epistemological interests in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences? · Can computer science also benefit from the discussion of methods in the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies? The support of hermeneutic research processes by computer science can cover MultiMedia Indexing and Retrieval, Natural Language Processing (e.g. Named Entity Recognition), Knowledge Representation, Argumentation Mining, Machine Learning, Reliability, Explainability and Reproducibility. For the workshop, we are looking for contributions from both realms - computer science and humanities, also preferably in interdisciplinary tandem. We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on the AHRC-funded project “Museum Closure in the UK 2000-2025”. You will be based at the Computer Science department at Birkbeck during the first year, and at the Digital Humanities department at King’s College London during the second year. The Museum Closure project will use trans-disciplinary methods to analyse closure and collections dispersal within the UK museums sector. Its aim is to examine the geographic distribution of closure, to better understand types of closure, and to document the flows of objects and knowledge from museums in the aftermath of closure. A Knowledge Base will be designed to model and store the collected data, and visualisations and statistical analyses of the data will be developed. Using these tools, the project team will aim to critically reassess notions of permanence and loss within the museum sector. The project builds on the earlier “Mapping Museums” and “Museums in the Pandemic” projects at Birkbeck (see http://blogs.bbk.ac.uk/mapping-museums/) It is led by Fiona Candlin, Professor of Museology at Birkbeck (Principal Investigator), Dr Andrea Ballatore (Digital Humanities, King’s College London) and Professors Alexandra Poulovassilis and Peter Wood (Computer Science, Birkbeck). As well as the Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Data/Computer Science, the project will also employ a postdoctoral research fellow in museology. You will design and implement the Knowledge Base (including software for uploading and extracting data), the statistical analyses, and the visualisations required for detailed data analysis. You will be required to collaborate with the other project members and report to the project group at regular team meetings (which may be held virtually or in person). You will be responsible for preparing refereed publications and presentations at conferences and project meetings. You may be required to travel within the UK and abroad several times a year. Essential skills include hands-on experience of programming, database design and implementation, and data analytics. The technologies used in the project include Python, R, and Neo4j. Experience in information visualisation is also highly desirable. Digital Academy 2023 - From Uncertainty to Action: Advancing Research with Digital Data (Digital History, Bielefeld University) Dear colleagues, dear Digital Humanities enthusiasts, the Digital Academy once again invites you to a vital exchange on data-based research and digital methods. This year, we will particularly focus on an issue that affects the Digital Humanities on all levels: uncertainty. With her concept of “capta,” Johanna Drucker pointed out that when researchers collect and model data, they use criteria that are not objectively given. Thus, there always is a certain perspective that is forced onto our data sets, which highly influences the possibilities of analysing data. In order to be able to exploit data sets to their full potential, it is crucial for researchers to reflect on this perspectivity. Uncertainty plays a role on various levels: How can we interpret unclear data within texts, for example ambiguous designations of people or places? In which formats are data sets available, and how does this affect working with different analysing tools? The Digital Academy 2023 will touch upon these questions and many more. In this context, uncertainty is not supposed to be framed as something deficient that inevitably blurs data-based research within the Digital Humanities. The aim instead is to explore and develop strategies that help dealing with digital research data. We will discuss these strategies from 25th to 28th September 2023 within an online format. 1. Open Space Day: Experts will report on their research projects and subsequently discuss aspects of their work with the audience. This part of the program is open to all who are interested. 2. Three-day workshop: The participants will get the opportunity to present and discuss their strategies for dealing with uncertainty within their own research projects. This workshop particularly aims at advanced Masters students, PhD students, and postdocs. Participation is free of charge for both parts of the program. Call for Participation (Three-Day Workshop) 1 Your Contributions Your contributions (20 mins. presentation, 10 mins. discussion) may deal with all kinds of possible interpretations of uncertainty with regards to digital data. We would like you to present strategies you have been using in order to deal with uncertainty in your own projects. Dear colleagues, The Institute of Classical Studies in London still has some available places for their annual summer school, 3D Imaging and Modelling for Classics and Cultural Heritage. This in-person course will introduce you to issues, methods and technologies in the 3D imaging and modelling of ancient artefacts and buildings. Through a mix of discussion and practical training, you will learn about imaging of heritage objects. You will have the opportunity to put into practice the method of photogrammetry, the production of a 3D model from multiple still photographs of an object. You will also gain experience with an easy-to-use 3D design tool, for creating reconstructions of lost historical buildings or monuments. Both sets of technologies will be presented within a theoretical and methodological framework, thinking about 3D modelling alongside best practice, preservation, ethical and legal issues. Drawing on the expertise of the Institute of Classical Studies, our research partners, and nearby cultural institutions, this course is suitable for students, archaeologists, teachers and anyone else with an interest.
