CFP for ADHO Pedagogy SIG workshop at DH2026

Dear colleagues, I would like to draw your attention to a workshop/poster slam organized by the ADHO Special Interest Group Pedagogy and Training as part of the DH2026 conference in Daejon. Please note that this event will take place as a workshop in the pre-conference program – all poster submissions for this workshop will be reviewed by the SIG leaders, but are independent of poster submissions for the DH2026 conference! The DH Pedagogy and Training SIG will hold a Pedagogy Poster Slam at the 2026 DH Conference in Daejeon, South Korea. The Pedagogy Poster Slam will take place during the SIG’s reserved slot during one of the conference’s two workshop days, either Monday, 27 July 2026, or Tuesday, 28 July 2026. Posters will either focus on a) a specific assignment for a DH or DH-inflected course or b) an entire course. During the workshop, participants will first participate in the Slam, where they will have a maximum of 120 seconds to discuss one aspect of their assignment or course. Once the participants have all spoken, the rest of the workshop will be devoted to a conventional poster session, where attendees can engage with the presenters at their posters. Presenters will be encouraged to bring print copies of their assignment/syllabus to distribute to attendees. All conference attendees will be welcome to attend the workshop and slam. (Plus, there will be food!) Call for Proposals The SIG Conveners invite all members of the DH community to submit proposals for the Pedagogy Poster Slam. Proposals will include · 150 words or fewer about the context of the assignment, course, or workshop · 200 words or fewer about the assignment, course, or workshop · An upload of either the assignment or the course syllabus Proposals should be submitted via the following Google Form: https://forms.gle/zdkNEHXPDppXQz3E6. Proposals are due by the end of 5 January 2026. Accepted participants will be notified not later than 5 February 2026. Proposals will be peer reviewed by the SIG Conveners. N.B. Please be aware that posters submitted to the pre-conference SIG Pedagogy Poster Slam are distinct from the DH2026 poster submission category. The Program Committee for DH2026 has indicated that you are welcome to submit posters to both the main conference as well as to this SIG workshop, although the submission format is significantly different. Next year's conference (July 27-31, 2026) will be hosted by the Korean Association for Digital Humanities (KADH) at the Daejeon Convention Center in Daejeon, South Korea. Semantic annotation—whether manual, automated, or human-in-the-loop—enables the identification and linking of concepts, entities, and relationships, transforming raw textual and visual data into structured, interoperable knowledge. At a moment when LLMs can generate fluent interpretations but require grounding in domain-specific context, semantic annotation and knowledge graphs provide essential transparency, precision, and reusability. We welcome contributions that showcase methods, tools, case studies, theoretical reflections, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. In line with FAIR and Linked Open Data principles, the conference encourages open and accessible research practices. Conference proceedings will be published in open access online format. Dear colleagues, Please join us on 10 December for the Centre for Data, Culture & Society Annual Lecture which will be given by Dorothy Berry, Digital Curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. When: 10 December, 16.00-18.30 GMT Where: Room 2.55, 1 Lauriston Place, The University of Edinburgh and online Title: How Users Imagine Archival Research: JPCA Explore and Digital Curation at the Smithsonian National African American History and Culture Museum Abstract: In 2021, the National Museum of African American History and Culture created a first-of-its-kind position at the Smithsonian Institution: a senior level curator with the wide-ranging portfolio of “digital interpretation.” Filling this position has called for creative education, especially when working with curatorial colleagues with a range of experiences and interests in digital humanities. In the past year, we’ve had a unique opportunity to introduce the possibilities of digital discoveries internally through the JPCA Explore project. The Johnson Publishing Company Archive (JPCA) is the largest collection of 20th century African American publishing materials, including a core collection of over 3 million photographs.  The JPCA was purchased in 2019 by a consortium of funders - the Ford Foundation, the J. Paul Getty Trust, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution. Since 2022, it has been formally co-stewarded by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and Getty. JPCA Explore is an experimental discovery lens in the larger in-development JPCA digital eco-system.  Based on a hand-selected subset of 3,000 images, Explore uses a bespoke metadata schema to invite users with zero research experience to create their own discovery paths by selecting inter-connected images. Explore was designed with an eye towards how the general public imagines archival discovery-moving from file to file, noticing connections, discovering the unknown. It has also served as an internal education tool, demonstrating the possibilities of digital humanities work as well as the intensive resources that are required to make those possibilities real. This talk will focus on the development of JPCA Explore and how it reflects wider issues around creating human-scale digital projects that still represent the magnitude of larger collections. By creating an interface with a focus on archival discovery, and at the same time completely ignoring archival hierarchical structures, this project seeks to implement Black Digital Humanities concepts to create new avenues into this archive.
