Reminder: Bielefeld guest lectures in Computational Literary Studies/Cultural Studies/Computational Linguistics/Digital Linguistics/Open Science
by Berenike Herrmann 03 Jun '25

03 Jun '25
Dear all, (with apologies for cross-postings), This summer term, the Bielefeld research colloquium “LiLi revisited: Digital Interface Research between Literary Studies and Linguistics" and the Bielefeld “Computational/Digital Linguistics Work Group Meeting” (H. Buschmeier/S. Zarrieß) will another guest lecture that I would like to draw your attention to. June 10: Prof. Dr. David Bamman (Berkeley): Measuring Representation and Linguistic Variation in Hollywood The lecture is public and can be attended in person and via zoom. The talk will not be recorded. David Bamman (Berkeley) Measuring Representation and Linguistic Variation in Hollywood Movies are a massively popular and influential form of media, but their computational study at scale has largely been limited due to the availability of data. In this talk, I'll discuss our efforts to build a collection of 2,307 films representing the top 50 movies by U.S. box office over the period 1980 to 2022, along with award nominees. Building this collection allows us to carry out several large-scale computational studies of film; I'll discuss our work measuring changing patterns in the representation of gender and race/ethnicity over the past 43 years (where we see an increase in diversity over the past decade) and in leveraging it to model variation in emotional performances and choice of adverbial intensifiers over both narrative and historical time. This work illustrates a new frontier of the data-driven analysis of film at a large scale. When: June 10 2025, 10-12 hs Where: Hybrid. Bielefeld University, Lecture Hall CITEC 1.204 and Zoom Zoom link: https://uni-bielefeld.zoom-x.de/j/64995938421?pwd=VzH0WHjA5I1LaLsGQeB2wJuvB… We are looking forward to a vivid discussion!
