Talks will not be recorded. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Nils Reiter (Cologne) More Open Science is not always the same as better science Open Science — the move(ment) to make processes and results of scientific research accessible to everyone — has gained popularity in recent years, and the goal to employ “open science” can now be found in many proposals, statements and web pages. The talk aims at taking a critical perspective, highlighting areas in which open science may actually also have negative impact. This will be discussed in two aspects of contemporary research: peer review and large language model use. Different forms of openness can be discussed for (open) peer review, such as the anonymity of reviewers/authors, or the publication of review texts. Training of large language models is not possible without a huge amount of text, and open data makes this substantially easier. In this talk, I'll discuss our efforts to build a collection of 2,307 films representing the top 50 movies by U.S. box office over the period 1980 to 2022, along with award nominees. Building this collection allows us to carry out several large-scale computational studies of film; I'll discuss our work measuring changing patterns in the representation of gender and race/ethnicity over the past 43 years (where we see an increase in diversity over the past decade) and in leveraging it to model variation in emotional performances and choice of adverbial intensifiers over both narrative and historical time. Dear DH community, We are excited to invite you to join the data challenge “Let’s Make a Cinephile Search Tool!”, organized by the Data Competence Center HERMES! Are you passionate about film, media, and data innovation? We invite you to take part in the data challenge “Let’s Make a Cinephile Search Tool!”— a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of AI, cultural heritage, and audiovisual archives. In this second edition of our data challenge, you'll work with 40 hours of real-world moving image data published by leading German and Dutch institutions. Your mission? Develop a discovery tool that enables multimodal search across 40 hours of public domain video content — not just using metadata, but also analyzing the visual and audio features of the footage. Your tool might detect shot types, identify objects and actions, or even find scenes that visually resemble an input image. You can integrate all of your developed features into a chatbot capable of handling complex prompts to perform multimodal searches across the dataset and return relevant results. This is your chance to create something impactful for scholars, researchers, and film enthusiasts — and push the boundaries of digital cultural access. Don’t worry if you don’t have a team yet! To this end, an international and interdisciplinary team will be formed at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Tartu (UT), including postdocs and doctoral students. This new team of experts will enable key actions establishing UT as a center for research and education in Digital Humanities. Each Research Fellow will mainly conduct research in the field of digital humanities, computational linguistics, computational literary studies, digital history, or related fields (depending on individual competencies), while also having the opportunity to teach and to participate in governance and institutional development. Applicants *must have* a PhD in Humanities, Social Sciences, Computer Science or related fields, experience in analysing textual data with digital tools, as well as experience in programming languages, such as Python or R. The research fellows will be employed at the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics, but their specialisation and focus will depend on the broader context of their research.
