Vacancy: Post-doctoral researcher in digital humanities (36 months, University of Helsinki, Finland)
by Hiippala, Tuomo J 12 Mar '24

12 Mar '24
Dear all, I'm looking to hire a post-doctoral researcher in digital humanities for my upcoming ERC-funded project: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/multimodality/a-foundation-for-em… The project develops novel methods and resources for studying multimodality, or how human communication naturally combines multiple 'modes' of expression. These methods and resources are used to develop empirically founded theories of multimodal communication in the domain of everyday cultural artefacts. The data studied in the project includes, for example, school textbooks, user-generated explanation videos on social media, news broadcasts, instruction manuals and online newspapers. This is a fixed-term position for 36 months, starting in September 2024 or as agreed, based in the Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland. RESPONSIBILITIES: The post-doctoral researcher is responsible for developing structured, machine-readable representations of multimodality for the page-based and audiovisual media studied in the project. As the descriptions of multimodality are collected using crowdsourcing, the post-doctoral researcher is also expected to participate in designing and implementing crowdsourcing pipelines. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in digital humanities, humanities computing, computer science or a related field, and have a keen interest in multimodality. Previous experience of developing structured representations for diverse forms of data is essential. Previous experience or interest in volunteer-based or paid crowdsourcing or citizen science is considered an asset. For more information, see the full announcement here: https://jobs.helsinki.fi/job/Helsinki-Post-doctoral-researcher-in-digital-h… If you have any questions about the position, please contact tuomo.hiippala(a)helsinki.fi. Best, Tuomo Hiippala --- Dr. Tuomo Hiippala | Associate Professor in English Language and Digital Humanities Department of Languages | University of Helsinki, Finland | +358 50 377 33 66 http://www.helsinki.fi/~thiippal/ | https://www.helsinki.fi/multimodality

[CfP] ESWC 2024 - Project Networking Session and Call for Participation
by Web and Publicity ESWC 11 Mar '24

11 Mar '24
Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC) is a key academic conference for research results and new developments in the area of the Semantic Web and Knowledge Graphs. ESWC 2024 marks the 21st edition, which will take place from May 26 – 30, 2024, in Heraklion, Greece. ESWC 2024 main scientific program features 3 main tracks (Research, Resource, In-Use), a special track on LLMs and Knowledge Representation, a poster and demo session, a PhD symposium, an industry track, nineteen workshops and tutorials (covering topics ranging from knowledge graph construction and natural language processing to robotics, ethics, linked data in construction and neurosymbolic techniques), and the following keynote speakers: • Elena Simperl (Professor, King’s College London, Director of research, Open Data Institute) • Peter Clark (Senior Research Director, Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence) • Katariina Karo (Lead Ontologist, Inter IKEA Systems B.V.) For full details and the list of accepted papers, see https://2024.eswc-conferences.org/accepted-papers/ Additionally, we would like to highlight the following: Call for Project Networking Session Profiles The project networking track of ESWC2022 will provide an opportunity to: • Share knowledge between research projects; • Transfer data and technology between projects; • Present and discuss project requirements and results with ESWC participants; • Discuss funding opportunities such as Horizon Europe and ERC. The project networking track is intended to provide research projects with the ability to connect with each other and engage in discussions about their respective research and development. It fosters opportunities for knowledge and technology sharing, and to identify complementary activities and goals. This can form the basis for future collaborations, research proposals, researcher exchange, or joint participation at events or initiatives. Who is invited? We equally welcome submissions from: (i) recently finished or about to finish projects, which have results to transfer/disseminate; (ii) ongoing projects: projects seeking methods, datasets and tools to perform their work and that would like to network and exchange know-how, expertise or info with other EU-funded projects; (iii) upcoming calls: discussion about upcoming calls to bring together potential proposals and consortium generation. What to expect from the network session? ESWC 2024 will offer you the opportunity to get to know researchers from different projects in a lightly organised setting. The network session chairs will match you with the most promising projects for you to talk to based on your profile during a series of ‘speed dates’. The Projects Networking Session will take place during ESWC 2024, in Hersonissos, Crete, during the main conference. The ESWC2024 program is being defined, come back soon for more detailed information on the exact date and time of the event. How to apply? Describe your project’s objective, what you would like to share with other projects and what you hope to find in other projects at: https://bit.ly/4bcdyRR This track will not be included in the proceedings, but your answers, with your consent, will be made available via the ESWC website to inform the community of the different projects in the session. Deadline: Send us your applications by Monday, 9 May 2022, 18:00 CET. Notification: Friday 13 May. In order to allow participants to benefit from the discounted early-bird registration and, at the same time, have more time to prepare the submission if they need so, we set two rounds of submissions, the first foreseeing both submission and notification before the deadline (24th of April) of the early-bird registration and the second one later in May 1st Round Send us your applications by Monday, 15 April 2024, 18:00 AoE. Notification: Friday 19 April. 2nd Round Send us your applications by Monday, 6 May 2024, 18:00 AoE. Notification: Friday 10 May.
