The conference will take place from 7 to 9 February at the University of Rennes (France). The majority of participants will be in person. Annual Research fellowship at the University of Roma Tor Vergata in Computational Literary Studies

In the context of the research project PRIN 2022 Reading the Italian Novel at a Distance (1830-1930) the selection is open for a Research Fellowship position (one year, possibly renewable) at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. The project aims to conduct distant reading experiments on a corpus of 1000 Italian novels and short story collections, including translations into Italian from other languages, published between 1830 and 1930. Large-scale analyses will be conducted from a synchronic and diachronic perspective using statistical and computational methods. Analyses will focus on the way characters express their thoughts and emotions and on the identification of social changes in the novels under investigation. All best wishes, —---- CALL FOR PAPERS —---- Historical Arguments and the Digital University of Luxembourg, 25th-27th June 2024 In 2016, Franco Morretti argued that “somehow digital humanities has managed to secure for itself this endless infancy, in which it is always a future promise.”1 In the years since, little has changed. Whilst there has been exponential growth in the number of resources, tools, and methodological discussions in the digital humanities, there remains limited contribution towards traditional historical narratives implementing these, increasing the apparent gap between DH and traditional history. Terminology in the digital humanities – networks, mapping, modelling – has long been used metaphorically to explore historical phenomenon; yet in digitalizing these ideas, we have gradually moved away from the analytical arguments these phrases were originally used for. The more digital methodologies are separated from traditional approaches – focusing on building without analysing and represented only on ‘digital humanities’ panels in historical conferences – the greater the risk is of becoming increasingly insular and closed-off, “an interdisciplinary silo in which we are only speaking to other displaced scholars.”2 As a result, the digital humanities are often still faced with the ‘so-what’ question: what impact can these new methods and approaches make on historical arguments and how can they advance scholarship? This conference seeks to address the ‘so-what’, promoting conversation as to how new research processes and methodologies might build into and contribute to traditional narratives. Though the building of digital resources and tools are in themselves important analytical and interpretative acts – and are slowly beginning to be recognised as such within the wider humanities – they are also vital building blocks for historical arguments that can exist as exemplars of both digital and traditional scholarship. This conference offers a space to consider how this gap might be closed once more, encouraging historical case studies reflecting on the ways in which digital methodologies have offered a means of exploring historical sources and expanding historical narratives and fostering digital history research questions that push beyond merely the descriptive to the interpretative and analytical. We invite abstracts of 300-500 words for 20-minute papers that demonstrate the argumentative practices of Digital History and the broader historical profession. These may employ any form of methodology or tool under the umbrella of ‘digital history’ examining any historical period across the globe, but must present findings and arguments engaging with and contributing to historical narratives. Papers will be arranged chronologically or by historical theme rather than methodological approach, reframing the focus on the historical contribution once more. In a media-centric world where language technology allows people to break cultural and language barriers, it is important that speakers of endangered and indigenous languages can be empowered to use this technology to continue to share their knowledge and culture with the world. With the hope of bridging this gap, the goal of this workshop is to increase visibility and promote research for lesser-resourced and underrepresented languages in Europe and Asia. Through collaboration between NLP researchers, language experts and linguists working for the benefit of endangered languages in these communities, we aim to create language technology resources that will help to preserve and revive these languages for future generations. Furthermore, the workshop aims to promote the emergence of new methods that benefit linguists, for instance for automation of analysis and validation processes, field linguists, the facilitation of data collection and analysis processes, and computational linguists by developing new techniques necessary for linguistic analysis, development of supervised or weakly supervised methods for the analysis of poorly written or undocumented languages. The main objective of the workshop is to create basic resources and develop tools for Eurasiatic languages, including but not limited to the following topics: * identifying languages and variants spoken in these regions * creation of language resources and applications, e.g. sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, and syntactic parsing * standardization for endangered languages * automatic identification and classification of lexical variation and language varieties * adaptation of fundamental NLP tools for these languages, e.g., morphological analysis, taggers and parsers * reusability of language resources in NLP applications, e.g. machine translation, and POS tagging * machine translation between closely related languages evaluation of language resources and tools when applied to lesser-resourced languages in the same language families * corpora, resources, and tools for closely related languages * linguistic and textual similarities among languages in Eurasia * digitalization of endangered languages * challenges in the creation of language resources and tools from linguistic perspectives (which includes any perspective formal theory) Submissions We are seeking submissions under the following category: Full papers: 8 pages+unlimited reference Short papers (work in progress): 4 pages+unlimited reference Posters (innovative ideas/proposals, a research idea of students): 4 pages+unlimited reference Demo (of working online/standalone systems): 2 pages Papers must describe original, completed or in progress, and unpublished work. We are looking for a cooperative and proactive team member with an interdisciplinary and applied research profile. One of the first tasks of the selected candidate will be the relaunch and extension of Korpus Südtirol (http://www.korpus-suedtirol.it/). (S)he will also be expected to participate in the Computational Linguistics and Digital Humanities activities of the research group and to support other corpus-based projects within the Institute. These tasks include creating, annotating, processing and expanding corpus resources, particularly those local to South Tyrol, while contributing to the growth of the Institute through the development of new projects and the pursuit of funding opportunities. The network metaphor is frequently used to describe this entanglement. In recent decades, however, historians have begun to think about ways of formalizing this approach, appropriating the concepts and tools of graph theory to provide a new perspective on archives. The application of formal network analysis to history is now a highly fertile field of experimentation and research. It can be used to analyze the geographical logics of major circulation networks, to highlight brokers in affiliation networks, to compile family trees to reveal their points of contact, to study the occurrences and co-occurrences of concepts in serial texts, to show the evolution of personal social networks, etc. And through a great deal of empirical work, the specific features that historical disciplines bring to network science become apparent: particular attention to the modeling of data that is often incomplete and uncertain, the need to take account of temporality in all its finesse, the necessity to find a language that allows mathematical results to be interpreted in a qualitative narrative. In 2009, following a workshop dedicated to the application of social network analysis to history, a small community of practice, the Historical Network Research community<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…>, was created. It evolved into a series of workshops and then an international conference, of which the present edition is the 9th to date, after conferences in Hamburg, Ghent, Lisbon, Turku, Brno, Luxembourg and Mainz. 2013 saw the creation of the HNR Collective Bibliography<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…>, a central tool for sharing the community’s scientific output. In 2017, the first issue of JHNR, the Journal of Historical Network Research<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…>, was published, allowing everyone to share their research in Open Access. Other resources include a YouTube channel<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…> with recorded lectures and a newsletter. Conference focus: Visualization Network visualization is often the first thing to be seen, whether it’s an illegible but colorful node-link diagram, an elaborate sociogram, an austere matrix or a fancy flow map. Because of our discomfort with basing our interpretation on an object apparently built on somewhat subjective foundations, because they are very likely to be influenced by a graphic bias, we often relegate visualizations to a minor role in our exploratory approaches, preferring the cold (apparent) scientificity of graph metrics. But just because we see naive uses of network visualization doesn’t mean it can’t be a highly effective tool for understanding, exploring and communicating our research data. One of the ambitions of the conference is therefore to question our use of network visualization in history, a concern that will be reflected in particular in the workshops and keynotes. Note that the HNR conference is open to all subjects involving network analysis in historical disciplines, so the thematic emphasis of this 2024 edition has no impact on the selection of contributions. The only effect will be that an image will be requested for each paper (after the review phase, if not included in the submitted abstract) to create a gallery that will be displayed during the conference to spark discussion about our network visualization practices. Topics For our 2024 conference, we welcome contributions discussing any historical period and geographical area. Authors may be historians, linguists, librarians, archaeologists, art historians, computer scientists, social scientists as well as scholars from other disciplines working with historical data. Topics may include, but are not limited to: * Applications of network analysis to history, art history, ancient history, intellectual history, economic history, social history, media history, political history, history of religions, biography, public history, micro-history, postcolonial history, global history, archaeology, literary history, cultural history, etc. * Analysis of specific network types, such as geospatial networks, temporal and dynamic networks, bipartite networks, multi-layer networks, multiplex networks, etc. * Methodological contributions concerning the applicability of network analysis to history, including, for example, modeling, ontologies, linked data, the use of graph metrics, visual network analysis, etc. * Pedagogical contributions, presenting teaching scenarios, literacy questions, software or feature presentations, interfaces, etc. Formats Long papers Long papers consist of a 20-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of discussion, and are intended to present comprehensive research. An abstract of 500-1000 words is required, including at least 3 citations. It should contain a description of the paper’s subject and research questions, an overview of the data used and methods employed, a discussion of the research results and possibly the wider implication for network analysis in history. Short papers Short papers consist of a 10-minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of discussion, and are intended to present research in progress. An abstract of 300-500 words is required, including at least 3 citations. It should contain a brief description of the subject and the research questions, an overview of the data used and the methods employed, a discussion of any results or questions still open at this stage. ________________________________ Submission guidelines Submission Abstracts must be submitted via the conference management platform by January 31, 2024: https://hnr2024.sciencesconf.org/<https://historicalnetworkresearch.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10c0d8…> The author (or corresponding author in the case of multi-authored papers) must create an account on the platform and then fill in the form, copying the abstract in full text (no PDF or other attachments). Abstracts can be written in English or French. Citations should use the Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition Author Date style (author-date in the text, then full reference at the end). Including an image in the abstract is encouraged to allow a general discussion of our network visualization practices. If, for any reason, the submitted version does not contain any, authors of accepted papers will be invited to add an image and caption at a later stage. Abstracts and images will then be published on the conference website ahead of the event and archived in a book of abstracts on Zenodo. Authors’ presence at the conference Although it is possible to follow the conference via streaming, it is nevertheless an on-site event. By submitting a paper, authors are aware that at least one person will need to be in Lausanne to present it. Hey all ~ Constellate, the new text analysis service from ITHAKA (the same people who brought you JSTOR,) is running a couple of free events in December and January. Relax and Learn about Text Analysis on Your Break<https://constellate.org/events/relax-and-learn-about-text-analysis-on-your-…>, a three hour workshop free for anyone to attend - December 27 at 9 am and 6 pm Eastern (suitable for Asia-Pacific based people.) Spend three hours with us and other attendees learning about different text analysis techniques at a measured pace over your holiday break! You get to learn about text analysis, build a dataset or two, and do some analysis on your datasets. No homework will be given 😊 and no local software is needed. And while we will use code, we will not be coding. Dear all, We are seeking, starting **1 March 2024**, a highly motivated candidate for a 1-year postdoc position in the area of NLP and Linked Data within the project [TextEnt (Textual Entities in Time)](https://www.unige.ch/lettres/humanites-numeriques/recherche/projets-de-la-chaire/textent). The successful candidate will be part of the Digital Humanities Unit at the University of Geneva and jointly supervised by [Simon Gabay](https://www.unige.ch/lettres/humanites-numeriques/equipe/collaborateurs/simon-gabay) (Textual Data, Computational Philology) and [Nicola Carboni](https://www.unige.ch/lettres/humanites-numeriques/equipe/collaborateurs/nicola-carboni) (Linked Data, Graph Analytics). Working conditions: - Contract duration: 1-year contract - Wage: CHF 78’625 (~82’000 €) - Remote work: to be discussed - Experience: PhD, 5 years maximum after the viva - Starting date: March 1st Tasks: 1. _Corpus building_: constitution of a corpus (c. 5,000 documents in Historical French) from existing digital libraries, (ii) extraction of the information with HTR, (iii) encoding in TEI. Data and HTR and layout analysis models are provided. 2. _Geographic entities_: recognition and extraction from the retrieved corpus of referenced entities (current, historical and imaginary). Data and NER models are provided. 3. _Reconciliation_: development of a novel knowledge-driven pipeline for linking identified geographical entities with their corresponding historical entity retrieved by a list of public Knowledge Graphs (e.g. Wikidata). To be built from scratch. 4. _Analysis_: development of methodologies for the quantification of the impact in time of geographic entities through the analysis of their spatial and historical dimension.
