The event will take place in Munich, Germany on March 27-28, 2023. DESCRIPTION Urban and architectural history are key areas in digital humanities and digital heritage. With respect to these research areas, digital repositories, data and research methods play an important role, especially when hosting visual media like photographs, paintings, or drawings, and last but not least physical and virtual models. Due to the wide field of possible research, different approaches, methods and technologies have emerged – and are still emerging. The purpose of the workshop is to provide a full picture with regards to epistemics, technology and framework conditions. We aim to discuss crucial challenges for further research and encourage exchange and debate. We would like to invite contributions on theoretical and methodological issues, application scenarios and projects, as well as novel approaches and tools. This includes the following five areas: 1. Theory, Methods, and Systematization 2. Data handling and data schemes 3. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence 4. Visualization and Presentation 5. Education in urban history To this cause, we are seeking original and innovative contributions in theoretical and practical applications on Digital Cultural Heritage. TOPICS Theory, Methods, and Systematization Digital humanities research as an inherently interdisciplinary field has created a high demand for critically reflected methods, techniques, valid strategies, classifications, and quality standards. But do computing methods also lead to new and ground-breaking research questions, approaches, or insights into architectural and urban cultural heritage research? In most cases, the use of computing simply extends nondigital possibilities, without much change to the pre-digital approaches and research questions. Nevertheless, digitalization has dramatically altered research qualities, quantities, and workflows. We welcome contributions on: 1. relevant data for architectural and urban history in digital archives and image repositories 2. the effects of the use of digital archives and image repositories on scholarly work 3. concepts and projects for networking and cooperation 4. possible research questions regarding objects, spaces, content or historical events Data handling and data schemes The immense effort invested in digitization and rapid changes in technologies and formats has greatly increased the importance of data standards. Long-term data storage, availability of models and the interoperability of data formats are major challenges to existing digital infrastructures. We welcome contributions on: 1. 3D databases as a tool to support urban historical research 2. Metadata and paradata 3. Remote sensing approaches to support contextualization and intuitive access to data 4. Linked and semantic data related to urban historical research 5. the influence of knowledge of HCI on the design of historic models Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence During the past few years, various new technological opportunities have arisen from big data, Semantic Web technologies, and the exponential growth in data accessible via digital libraries such as EUROPEANA. Data-driven supervised and unsupervised classification approaches have been used to acquire high-level semantic concepts, especially from the interconnection of different types of data. Interdisciplinary collaborations between computer science and humanities disciplines are essential in developing methods and workflows to enable cultural heritage research to exploit machine learning approaches. We welcome contributions on: 1. use cases and best practices of applied machine learning in digital humanities research 2. novel approaches e.g., (semi-) automatic photogrammetric reconstruction of historical buildings from image databases Visualization and Presentation Historians in cultural heritage research today are enabled to explore new research directions due to the availability of multitudes of digitized historical photographs in image repositories. Moreover, novel approaches such as the photogrammetric reconstruction of historical buildings from image databases allow for contextualization and intuitive access to data. Typical motivations for accessing these archives and repositories are scientific research, pedagogical applications, and the study of historical sites. These areas require advances in methods for visualization and presentation of data to support the different target groups. We welcome contributions on: 1. Projects and investigations from urban history concerned with visualizations and presentation of spatial and/or scholarly data 2. Research scenarios for scholars using visualizations of urban history data 3. Interdisciplinarity, e.g. intersections between digital cultural heritage and (sustainable) tourism studies Education in urban history Education and support by digital libraries still only plays a minor role in scholarly discourses on cultural heritage and in particular urban history. There is still no broad consensus on specific education paradigms or a canon of didactic settings in digitally supported teaching on urban history, and as yet no larger studies have been conducted in this area. We are very pleased to invite you to contribute to the 10th edition of the DH Benelux Conference, which will take place in Belgium at KBR – the Royal Library of Belgium from 31 May -2 June, 2023. The annual DH Benelux conference serves as a platform for the community of interdisciplinary Digital Humanities researchers to meet, present and discuss their latest research findings and to demonstrate tools and projects. This year’s central theme is ‘Crossing Borders’. You can find the complete Call for Papers below. Submissions can be made via Easychair, which will be made available asap. Key dates - Deadline for submitting abstracts: Tuesday 31 January 2023 (23:59 CET) - Notification of acceptance: Wednesday 1 March 2023 - Conference: 31 May – 2 June 2023 – in Brussels and streaming online Note that one author must attend in person to present the contribution. Description The call is open to all colleagues working in the Arts & Humanities, the (Social) Sciences, and the Heritage Sector with an interest and enthusiasm in the application and use of digital technologies. Submissions are welcome from researchers at all career stages. We particularly encourage early stage researchers (MA/PhD students and postdoctoral researchers) to submit abstracts. In addition, we welcome humanities scholars, developers, computer and information scientists as well as art galleries, librarians, archivists and museum curators (GLAM). Language We accept abstracts written in English (preferred) and in any official language of the Benelux. Theme We invite submissions of abstracts on any aspect of Digital Humanities: practical experimentation, theorizing, cross- and multidisciplinary work, and new and relevant developments. This year, the conference’s central theme is “Crossing borders: digital humanities research across languages and modalities”. Of particular interest are contributions that consider multilingualism and/or integrated processing of sources in different forms as images, maps, sounds texts and datasets. Formats For DH Benelux 2023, we welcome five types of proposals: (1) long papers; (2) short papers; (3) posters; (4) application and tool demonstrations; and (5) workshops. Abstracts should clearly state the title of the presentation and the names and affiliations of the authors and the presenters. If applicable, please include your Twitter username and ORCID. Please indicate for which category (or categories) of presentation you are submitting your proposal. The word length is dependent on the proposal type, see details below. References and/or bibliography are excluded from the word count. The reviewers will take word length into account. Proposals may contain graphics and illustrations. - Long papers (abstracts of 1000-1500 words, paper presentation 20 mins + 10 mins for discussion) are suitable for presenting empirical work, theorizing, cross- and multidisciplinary work, research methods and concise theoretical arguments. The research presented in a long paper should be completed or in the final stages of development. The research’s stage of completion must be clearly stated in the abstract. - Short papers (abstracts of 750-1000 words, paper presentation 10 mins + 5 mins for discussion) are well-suited for reporting on early stage and ongoing research, as well as new project presentations, technical details and the results of practical experimentation and proof of concepts. - Posters (abstracts of 500-750 words) are particularly suited for detailed technical explanations and clarifications, and for the show and tell of projects and research alike. - Demonstrations (abstracts of 500-750 words) of prototypes, work-in-progress or finished software, hardware technology, tools, datasets, digital publications and so forth. Demonstrations take place in parallel to poster sessions, and are meant to be interactive. - Workshops (abstracts of 1000-1500 words) are self-organized tracks running parallel to the main program, on the first day of the conference. Workshop proposals are welcome on relevant topics and/or innovative approaches/tools/techniques. Workshops can be organized to run in hybrid, in-person or fully virtual mode, at the discretion of the organizers. The abstracts will be peer-reviewed by the DH Benelux 2023 Programme Committee and published on the DH Benelux 2023 website. Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit a full research article for the DH Benelux Journal. A separate call for journal submissions will be made after the conference. Survey on social justice and ethical research in the digital humanities

Dear Colleagues, We are developing a new course for #dariahTeach <https://teach.dariah.eu> on the topic of social justice and ethical research in the digital humanities, funded by DARIAH EU. We are keen to cast our net widely to get an overview of what digital humanities projects and research has been or is being undertaken in this space. We would be very interested in learning of your digital scholarship in the area of social justice broadly conceived, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, religion, indigenous peoples rights and interests, postcolonial, and decolonial research. We are interested in both project-based scholarship as well as more traditional publications. To this end, we have developed a survey that should not take more than 10-15 minutes to complete to gather information from the community. We plan on converting the survey to a registry within the #dariahTeach course so the wider DH community can also have an overview of scholarship in this area. We welcome submissions of tutorial proposals on all major topics related to semantic technologies. It can also illuminate broader relationships between museums, society, and the wider Creative and Cultural Industries (e.g. Me|Mind, 2021), to help produce more joined-up cultural policy and strategy (Centre for Cultural Value, 2022). The application of data analytics presents growing opportunities for institutions and researchers across the cultural sector. While museums often use data to develop visitor profiles and drive income generation, there is tremendous scope to leverage data in ways that reimagine the cultural work of the museum and knowledge of the museum sector. Within museums, work has taken place to use data to enhance curatorial decision-making (Tate, 2016), to personalise collections databases (Noehrer et al., 2022), and to enrich and improve visitor experiences (e.g. Villaespesa & Murphy, 2021). Stemming from the Mapping Museums project (http://www.mappingmuseums.org<http://www.mappingmuseums.org/>), this one-day conference seeks to draw together museum studies scholars, data scientists, cultural policymakers, and geographers to discuss and debate the role and scope of museum analytics and to frame the development of this area of research and practice. The newly established 'Playground & Laboratory for New Technologies: The Plant', a research and education infrastructure at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at Maastricht University is hiring a Creative Lab Technologist and a Research Software Engineer to contribute to its mission. The Plant aims to support researchers, educators, and students in engaging with technologies and opening up new societally relevant research and teaching paths, through collaboration, exchange, and experimentation. The Plant will add to the digital infrastructure at Maastricht University by catering to needs that are specific to the humanities and social sciences, while also fostering ground-breaking interdisciplinary research and education: group-based and technology-oriented with diverse and atypical outputs, including but not limited to podcasts, (online) digital exhibitions and collections, videos, datasets, interactive 2D/3D visualisations, databases, prototypes, and software. Call for papers Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence (HHAI 2023) Mid/End of June 2023 (date TBD), Munich, Germany Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence (HHAI 2023) is the second international conference focusing on the study of Artificial Intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively and purposefully with humans, amplifying instead of replacing human intelligence. HHAI aims for AI systems that work together with humans, emphasising the need for adaptive, collaborative, responsible, interactive and human-centered intelligent systems that leverage human strengths and compensate for human weaknesses, while taking into account social, ethical and legal considerations. This field of study is driven by current developments in AI, but also requires fundamentally new approaches and solutions. In addition, we want to encourage collaborations across research domains such as AI, HCI, cognitive and social sciences, philosophy & ethics, complex systems, and others. In this second international conference, we invite scholars from these fields to submit their best original, new as well as in progress, visionary and existing work on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence. ## Topics We invite research on different challenges in Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence. The following list of topics is illustrative, not exhaustive: * Human-AI interaction and collaboration * Adaptive human-AI co-learning and co-creation * Learning, reasoning and planning with humans and machines in the loop * User modelling and personalisation * Integration of learning and reasoning * Transparent, explainable and accountable AI * Fair, ethical, responsible and trustworthy AI * Societal awareness of AI * Multimodal machine perception of real world settings * Social signal processing * Representations learning for Communicative or Collaborative AI * Symbolic and narrative-based representations for human-centric AI * Role of Design and Compositionality of AI systems in Interpretable / Collaborative AI We welcome contributions about all types of technology, from robots and conversational agents to multi-agent systems and machine learning models. ## Paper types In this conference, we wish to stimulate the exchange of novel ideas and interdisciplinary perspectives. To do this, we will accept three different types of papers: * Full papers present original, impactful work (12 pages excluding references) * Working papers present work in progress or new and visionary ideas (8 pages excluding. references) * Extended abstracts present existing, pre-published work (4 pages excluding references) Accepted full papers will be published in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Hybrid Human-Machine Intelligence, in the Frontiers of AI series by IOS Press. Abstracts of working papers and existing work can be included in these proceedings, unless the authors request the abstracts to remain unpublished. All accepted papers will receive a minimum slot for oral presentation. Depending on the content and quality of the work, papers will be selected for long or short presentations. ## Location This will be an in-person, single-track conference, held in Munich, Germany. Date and venue will be announced. ## Reviewing process & Submission guidelines Reviewing will be single anonymised, as we are welcoming existing work and references to previous work from the submitting authors. Submissions of full and working papers should be original work and ideas without substantial overlap with pre-published papers. Extended abstracts can present previously published work. On acceptance, at least 1 author should attend the conference. A significant contribution is expected from all authors. A justification of contributions in the paper is appreciated. All studies involving human participants should have received human-research ethics consent from the relevant institutions and mention this in the paper. All submissions should adhere to IOS formatting guidelines (cfr. website). Papers should be written in English.
