It's probably obvious, but in the Victorian period, you could do well to look at Matthew Arnold's Culture and Anarchy, which struggles with cultural transformation and definition vis a vis the past, particularly in response to technological change and mechanization, or, at an earlier period, but in much the same spirit, Carlyle's Signs of the Times.
