There is no need, I believe, that we sign the statment individually, as we appear to have consensus that we want to publish this as a joint statement of our two European-level projects.
Let's spread our message via Twitter as well. I hope the cumulated effect of all these statements could in the end have some weight, both in terms of a universal condemnation of Russia's act of aggression and as moral support for the people in Ukraine.
But let's not forget that Ukraine also needs very concrete support so please consider donating to an organization of your choice.

Dear All, congratulations on a very thoughtfully designed and worded initiative - first the statement on https://www.distant-reading.net/ukraine/ and then of course this important first concrete initiative at relieving some of the hardship faced by Ukranian researchers. I have always found the engagement of scholarly organizations in current political matters to be a complicated and tricky thing. To my mind many of the statements issued by such organizations in the recent past have smacked of a political and moral self-righteousness or wokeness-inspired flagellantism that comes just a bit too cheaply, and noticeably in US-academia's rhetorical currency. Against that backdrop your carefully worded and sincere approach in reaction to the current humanitarian and political catastrophe in Europe stands out as a sincere, genuine and mature response. A highly commendable, important effort - hats off to the initiators and supporters. Best, Chris Am 27.02.2022 um 20:37 schrieb Silvie Cinkova:

I endorse Chris's comments. It's difficult for those of us sitting safely in the US to comprehend just how terrible the situation is. About all we can usefully do is provide humanitarian support and applaud the incredible bravery of Ukranians, Russians, and others much nearer the dangerous situation. David -- David L.
