The Unicode Consortium will be holding a webinar on “Documenting and Preserving Languages with Unicode: A Talk on Character Encoding, Keyboards, and Fonts” on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. The presenters are Dr. Deborah Anderson (Chair, Unicode Script Ad Hoc and Project Lead, Script Encoding Initiative, Dept. of Linguistics, UC Berkeley) and Dr. Andrew Glass (Chair of Unicode CLDR Keyboards Subcommittee). Abstract: The Unicode Standard is the basis of electronic communication today on computers and devices, and hence is fundamental to documenting and preserving languages and the scripts used to write them. But understanding how Unicode is structured, how characters and scripts are added, and how to get characters on keyboards and in fonts can be challenging. This webinar on character encoding, keyboards, and fonts is geared to language practitioners and users generally. It will provide an overview of Unicode, explain how characters are organized in Unicode and how to propose new characters, and discuss accessing the characters on keyboards and fonts.
