Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce our program and that the registration for the International Conference “Data Ethics for Historical research in a Digital Era: Critical Reflections and Best Practices” (10-12 November 2025, Mainz, Germany) is now open: https://events.adwmainz.de/data-ethics/. The conference is organized by the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) – Research group »Digitality in Historical Research« | DH Lab –, in cooperation with NFDI4Memory and the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz, and is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The conference seeks to examine the ethical dimensions of data usage within historical research, fostering discussions among scholars to provide practical tools and strategies to navigate these challenges. A rich program of contributions – spanning from colonial studies, to museums and their management and presentation of sensible materials – will explore the theme from multiple perspectives and through various applications. Practical solutions for addressing the issue of sensible terms in databases will be addressed by our keynote speaker, Kerstin Herlt, coordinator of the European project DE-BIAS.

We invite interested scholars, practitioners and students, as well as anyone else who is interested, to register for the conference, either on-site or online, via the following link: https://events.adwmainz.de/data-ethics/ . For organizational reasons, the on-site registration is open until the 3rd of November.

For the program and further information about the conference, please visit our conference website: https://ieg-dhr.github.io/Data-Ethics/

Please don’t hesitate to share the invitation with interested colleagues and students.

We look forward to discussing this topic with you at the conference!

Best regards,
