Seminar Room at Stellenbosch University=2C and online ABSTRACT Bias in language processing systems can reinforce societal inequalities by= amplifying existing biases in language and culture. This research paper e= xamines gender bias in Amharic word embeddings=2C which are vital for unde= rstanding Ethiopia's cultural and linguistic contexts. By analysing gender= ed word pairs=2C we assessed gender representation and found that many pro= fessional terms carry implicit biases favoring males=2C while terms like "= Nurse" and "Sister" align with traditional gender roles for women. Notably= =2C the word "Doctor" exhibits a gender-bias discrepancy between its writt= en and translated forms. Additionally=2C arts and athletics professions of= ten exhibit a female bias=2C whereas physically demanding and higher-educa= tion roles tend to be male-dominated. These findings highlight the implica= tions of gender bias in Amharic=2C reflecting disparities in employment an= d educational opportunities=2C and aim to inform strategies to promote fai= r language representations. He was a co-founder of the Ethio= pian Free and Open Source Software Network (EFOSSNet)=2C where he served a= s Regional Manager from 2005 to 2009. ABSTRACT
Bias in language processing systems can reinforce societal inequalitie= s by amplifying existing biases in language and culture. This research pape= r examines gender bias in Amharic word embeddings, which are vital for unde= rstanding Ethiopia's cultural and linguistic contexts. By analysing gendere= d word pairs, we assessed gender representation and found that many profess= ional terms carry implicit biases favoring males, while terms like "Nu= rse" and "Sister" align with traditional gender roles for wo= men. Notably, the word "Doctor" exhibits a gender-bias discrepanc= y between its written and translated forms. Additionally, arts and athletic= s professions often exhibit a female bias, whereas physically demanding and= higher-education roles tend to be male-dominated. These findings highlight= the implications of gender bias in Amharic, reflecting disparities in empl= oyment and educational opportunities, and aim to inform strategies to promo= te fair language representations.

BIOGRAPHY
Dr Solomon Gizaw completed his PhD at the Localisation Research Centre (LRC= )/Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, at the University o= f Limerick. He also holds an MSc in Computer Science and a BSc in Applied M= athematics from Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia.
He is one of the contributors to the development and innovation of the Serv= ice-Oriented Localisation Architecture Solution (SOLAS), a component-based,= open-source localisation platform. He was a co-founder of the Ethiopian Fr= ee and Open Source Software Network (EFOSSNet), where he served as Regional= Manager from 2005 to 2009. He was also a Council Member of the Free and Op= en Source Software Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA) from 2006 to 2010, and a = Secretariat Member of the African Network for Localization (ANLoc) from 200= 8 to 2015.
Currently, he is a research member of the African-European Cluster of Resea= rch Excellence (CoRE AI), and a Research Fellow at AAU.
