Willard

Charles Archer reports Gilbert Murray giving the following definition:

<quote>
An <i>apparatus criticus</i> [...] is a list of the MS. variations, with
occasional remarks thereon. Only men of the highest moral character,
religion, and social grace can produce one satisfactorily.
</quote>

from <i>Essays in Honour of Gilbert Murray

How would one update (besides the obvious gendered reference) for the 21st
century?
