Rare Book School welcomes applications from digital humanities scholars for our Summer 2012 courses. Rare Book School (RBS) provides week-long, intensive continuing-education opportunities for students from all disciplines and levels to study written, printed, and born-digital materials with leading scholars and professionals in the field.

Highlights of the summer schedule include:

- XML in Action: Creating Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Texts, taught by David Seaman of Dartmouth College Library.  A practical exploration of the creation, preservation, and use of electronic texts and their associated images in the humanities.

- Digitizing the Historical Record, taught by Bethany Nowviskie & Andrew Stauffer of the University of Virginia.  An overview of the scholarly, theoretical, and institutional issues involved in the digitization of our shared cultural heritage.

- Scholarly Editing: Principles & Practice, taught by David Vander Meulen of the University of Virginia.  An introduction to the principles and practice of scholarly editing, with an emphasis on preparing an edition.  Issues in preparing digital editions of historical texts are addressed.

Digital Scholarship Seminar: Undergraduates Collaborating in Digital Humanities 
National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education 


One of the key appeals for digital humanities at small liberal arts
colleges has been as an avenue for undergraduate research in the
humanities. NITLE's next Digital Scholarship Seminar offers the opportunity
to talk with undergrads from four different institutions about the benefits
and challenges of engaging in digital humanities research.

This seminar will take place online in NITLE's Virtual Auditorium.  To find

I'm writing to let you know about the Call for Papers for a new bi-annual
conference, hosted by the Humanities Research Institute, which will take
place in Sheffield, UK during September 2012. 

The Digital Humanities Congress is a new conference which will be held in
Sheffield every two years. Its purpose is to promote the sharing of
knowledge, ideas and techniques within the digital humanities. 

Digital humanities is understood by Sheffield to mean the use of technology
within arts, heritage and humanities research as both a method of inquiry
and a means of dissemination. As such, proposals related to all disciplines
within the arts, humanities and heritage domains are welcome.

Data Visualization Between Local Research and Global Networks

Cfp: Swiss Congress of Historical Sciences, Fribourg, Switzerland, 7-9 
February 2013.

Over the past few years, the visualization of data in the humanities has 
undergone a renaissance. Static charts have been succeeded by highly 
versatile and dynamic multi-medial graphs, a process enabled and 
accompanied by a rapid increase of standardized and open data, which has 
become globally accessible and connected.

Various factors accelerate these developments: the growing amount of 
computing capacity in the context of production, management and 
networking of digital data has not only produced new forms of research 
data but also new tools to use, process and visualize these data. Yet, 
from a methodological point of view, there have only been some light 
reflections about how these new forms can be used in historical research 
and what methodological consequences they entail.To complement our 
current range of papers, we are looking for further contributions about 
theoretical and/or empirical aspects of this topic, which focus on the 
opportunities of data visualization between local research and global 
networks.

The panel offers not only the opportunity to present projects but also 
aims to be a platform for a broader discussion about problems and 
best-practice solutions. Contributions can be published in a forthcoming 
edition of 93Geschichte und Informatik94, the Journal of the Swiss 
Association for History and Computing.

 Please submit your paper proposal (abstract of max. 250 words) and a 
short CV by email to info at ahc-ch.ch. The deadline for proposal 
submissions is May 6, 2012.

poster session. Submissions are sought in several areas of computer
science, mathematics and biology.

Submissions of two kinds are welcome:

- Regular papers
- Research reports

All submitted papers must be in the PDF format and between 3 and 15
pages long. All submissions will be evaluated by the programme
committee. Submission is through the EasyChair system,
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=turing100. 

Regular papers must include original work not submitted before or
during the Turing-100 reviewing period to any other event with
published proceedings or a journal. All submitted regular papers will
be considered eligible for the best paper awards. 

Research reports can contain work in progress and/or be based on
previously submitted work. They will not be eligible for the best
paper awards.

paper must register for the conference, attend it and present the
paper at the poster session. All accepted papers will be published in
the conference proceedings and available at the conference. The
instructions on preparing final versions for the proceedings will
appear on the Turing-100 Web site.

A subset of accepted regular papers will be selected by the programme
committee for the second round of reviewing. The authors of the
selected papers will be invited to submit revised versions of their
papers by May 16. The programme committee will make decisions on best
paper awards by June 14. All papers receiving the award will be
published in a book dedicated to the conference and published after
the conference. This book will also contain some papers by invited and
panel speakers.
