I suspect your colleague may know Shelley Hales in Bristol, but it would be 
worthwhile contacting her:

She gave an interesting presentation a couple of weeks ago on her Second 
Life reconstruction of the Pompeiian townhouse formerly in the Crystal 
Palace, itself a reconstruction with assumptions from its own time built 
into it. A quick search found an article from the local paper about her

 She's also addressing the question of how to present her Second Life work 
as a research output.
